Ok... so a lot of viewers have requested video of shop work and maintenance on our trucks. This video covers both. We will be, as the title states, inspecting, re-spooling, and lubricating the main boom winches on the Rotator, our 2015 Peterbilt 389X with a Miller Industries, Century 1150R towing and recovery unit. Something a little different from my normal videos, but suggested by my viewers, so I hope everyone enjoys. Thanks for watching and God bless!!!

i think some people forget about how much goes into prepping and maintaining equipment so its ready when you need it, even more so the rotator is basically a crane that gets used in an extreme way there is so much dynamic load that is imparted on the truck, jib and cables im always amazed to watch them work. Thanks for sharing your world with us Ron always nice to look over the masters shoulder as he works.

This is one that everyone who does towing and recovery needs to watch, as you do not want winch cables tangled up at a major wreck trying to unwind them when using them

Last winter I was watching a tow guy in a residential street trying to pull a van up a steep hill in the ice and snow. His winch lines were rusty and clearly not spooled right. He couldn't unspool more than 30 feet. I wish I could have dropped a link to this channel without really annoying the guy but I knew that'd never fly.

We used to drag the cable out with a light truck, then winch the truck back to the wrecker under slight load, but using the hardwood blocks seems a much better way of doing things, as it straightens out the cable as well

We used to use both an uparmored humvee (idling in drive away from us) for the tension and a pair of 2x10 2ft sections clamped around the cable the long way just before the end pulley sheeve to smooth and realign the cable strands.

In the Military we called it PMCS (Preventative Maintenance Checks and Services) and we had to do it on a regular basis. I did mine on the M548A1 Cargo Carrier every 2 weeks and just after returning from a field exercise. I could get it done in less than an hour but I usually prolonged it to about 2.5 hours just to burn time as most of the time we were just hanging around not doing much.

I could watch this all day, still to this day think winches are the neatest thing in the world. My dad built a couple of gin-pole trucks back when I was younger so I always had winches around and was helping all the time. Never really had to re-spool the cable because the trucks were mostly used for hoisting a short distance. The few times we did we had a section of our driveway that was just long enough for the cable so we just tied the end of the cable to a tree and winched the truck backwards towards it using the trucks weight for tension. The winches were big frame mounted worm gear winches driven off a PTO chain so I took quite awhile to spool them if you didn’t want to be revving the truck to redline.
