Video shows our visit to Tattershall Castle in Lincolnshire on 3rd June 2023.
Tattershall Castle has been in the care of the National Trust since 1925. Built by Robert de Tattershall in 1231. The castle was rebuilt in brick and expanded by Ralph Cromwell between 1430 to 1450.
The Castle is built out of 700,000 bricks and is renowned as one of the finest examples of medieval brick work in England.
The castle is surrounded by moats and wildflowers.
In 1643 the castle was damaged during the Civil War with only the great tower intact. Parliament ordered the demolition of the remaining parts. Fortunately the Earl of Lincoln appealed the order to leave the tower intact. The castle fell into ruin after the death of the Earl and it was only in 1911 that Lord Curzon of Kedleston helped to save it from destruction. He bought the castle and re-instated many of the original pieces and opened it to the public. Upon his death in 1925 the castle was bequeathed to the National trust.
