I love seeing artists expose their copycats. It’s fun to see how drastic the quality is between a talented artist and a copy. I just feel bad for the artists but also the people who got the original tattoos. I’m sure most of them expected to have an original piece on their body, but some people just straight up steal the designs.

I am all for artists being paid what they deserve and absolutely think that a tattoo that is drawn for someone should not be copied without express permission. That said, I think people need to chill tf out with their need for perfectly "original, one-of-a-kind" tattoos because those are really rare and most designs someone can think of have been done. I promise you, you are unique enough, you dont need to prove it by having extremely unique tattoos

But also, If you get something cultural, or something witch has been a generic Symbol or design( Pin Up, swallows, words, etc.) than I Like the opinion, that it is what Tattoos are, since always , so do what ever. But If you think of IT, as Art on your skin, maybe you take the unique Turn, and give your Artist some freedom. Most of them will apreciate you for the destraction from the routine... @@onosxobut it’s also difficult, as she said, to have anything unique these days when it comes to tattoos. Because once it’s out there, if someone likes it, they’re likely going to get it. And it’s difficult to be ‘unique’ and individual when we have no idea what other people may have who aren’t online, if that makes sense. Like I’ve thought of a lot of ideas (I don’t frequent social media so none of these were subconsciously stored away after seeing it) only to suddenly come across it online or see someone in the world doing it and I’m like hmm… thought I was doing something there😂 I don’t think it’s cool to copy other’s art, especially if it is original to the artist/designer or wearer/consumer but I do feel it’s a tricky situation with everything being publicized and visible. I don’t know if we should tell artists to turn down clients who want replicated tattoos but they should redirect them and see if they can come up with a compromise so they can make it individual to the client…? And then turn them away if they refuse to compromise. When I got my recent tattoo, I showed the artist an inspiration photo and instead of copy/pasting it, she sketched her own variation, got my ok, confirmed it didn’t look exactly like the photo (we spent a good 45m doing this in person and she had sent me a photo of her sketch a week prior) THEN we proceeded.

The absolute worst I learned personally was when you go to a tattoo artist and tell him "I want a tattoo of xx" and he presents you with the project he claims he did by himself and later you find out he ripped it off the internet. So it is not always the client coming to the artist telling "I want this project". Sometimes its just the "artist"

The existence of flash definitely complicates the line between copying and repeated designs, but I think the main difference comes down to intention. Flash is mean to be repeatable, while custom work is not. Flash is meant to be, as one of the comments in the video said, “fun and simple,” I think those are the elements that encourage tattoo clients to celebrate the fact that someone else has the same or a similar tattoo as them.

I just got a tattoo last week that is a tribute to my son. I trusted the artist and said ok to a tattoo I wasn't 100% sure of. He knocked it out of the park. I saw the passion he put into it. The look on his face when he was done and I asked if it came out like he wanted and he said yes was just incredible. If someone copied that tattoo that I wear prominently on my forearm that an artist made for me specifically...I would feel hurt and it would feel very wrong. It would devalue the efforts and care the artist put into it.

I personally love my flash tattoo more than the one I had drawn custom. The custom one is superior is most objective ways, but there was something so magical of going into going to this shop when I turned 18 and told the guy that I wanted the sun and moon tattoo that I'd been eying through the window for years. It doesnt matter how many other people I see or meet with that design because this one is mine and it means a lot to me. With my custom tattoo I spent a long time finding the right references and finding the right artist in my city who could do what I wanted and it was great and I still love it and what it represents, but I think there's just something special about experiencing the tradition of flash and knowing you are part of a long line of tattooed people. But I think part of the transformation in the industry has to do with how acceptable tattoos are now. When tattoos were still fringe, your tattoo made you part of a group, a community. Now with almost everyone having at least one tattoo, people feel the need to stand out and still feel special. I think its probably better to find a way to feel special that isn't cosmetic, but everyone is different lol

It’s interesting to see this video knowing what I now know about tattoos. I look back on when I was 18-21 and had no idea that asking for someone else’s art to be tattooed onto me was wrong or not ok. Never did I ever have a tattoo artist tell me that they didn’t want to copy a design. I remember having tattoo artists change the design without telling me why and pushing me to get it how they designed it. I was young and shy and let them convince me. If I would’ve known it was because they didn’t want to copy another artist’s work then I would’ve understood and made some changes to the design that I liked and were my idea. Literally no one explained tattoo etiquette to me. I had to learn the hard way. This was back in the early 2000’s. I’m happy to see more tattoo artists speak up about their values and explain it to their clients because it really sucks being left in the dark and getting pressured into getting something you don’t love without fully understanding why they won’t do what you’re asking for in the first place.

I think one big reason for the shift in the tattoo industry going from the choosing from a book/wall to more custom designs is the wide availability of technology and Photoshop. It's now much easier to combine different elements and change things in the design create a fully custom piece of art, compared to the old ways of needing to actually be good at drawing the specific thing someone might want for a custom tattoo

As an artist myself, any obvious rip of someone else's personal or client work is extremely bad form - it's not only insulting to us but to the people who requested the original piece to begin with. When it comes to tattoos, flash was mostly meant to be repeated and I think that's fine, people KNOW that they're gonna be sharing that design with countless others, plus, the artist can put their own spin on it. Custom work is more personal and it GETS more personal if someone steals it fr.

Flash is like public domain media. To me, I think it's cool to give an old design new life. Tattoos are not like paintings that can be reprinted forever. The life of the tattoo ends when the life of the person does. So I think using an old flash design honors the person who created it as well as the people who have modified it over the decades. It makes a temporary thing eternal and as an artist I consider that an awesome achievement. I agree with everything you said about original artwork. I feel like there's a difference between a piece of art and a design. If a design endures, it eventually belongs to everyone. That doesn't happen with a person's artwork, it's more personal. It's creepy to steal art 😭

Honestly I just think about how I would feel if I saw someone with the same tattoo as me. As said in the video, if you see someone with the same flash tattoo it's a cool bonding moment. But if you saw someone with the same tattoo as you that was a custom design you spent time and effort looking for and working with a specific artist on, you'd be like "hey what the fuck?" It's different, it's personal. The copyright of it is complicated but just from an ethical standpoint you can see why those two things are different just based on that initial reaction.

There's something everyone is missing here, old tattoo artists would put together their works in collections to be used for this purpose. To be shared, copied, and sometimes sold. If the art isn't listed as fair use or for sale, it perhaps shouldn't be used?

I agree. I'm a little conflicted on this tbh. Part of me says the customer should be able to get whatever they desire since it's their body. But I also agree that personal artwork is privileged. IMHO, I think I would personally feel honored that others wanted my artwork used on their body... But obviously if it's done poorly, I would feel icky about it. Idk,I personally feel like the client should be able to get whatever art they desire, and if they're on with the artist putting their own spin on it -cool. But if not, I don't see it as *that* big of a deal. Kinda like you said, don't "advertise" your work if you don't want others to use it.

I'm a tattoo artist and not even super famous one but my tattoos got copied a dozen times that I know of, and every time it hurts a bit, because my designs are 100% drawn by me, in my own unique style (not even close to traditional American style), and to see them ripped off without my permission is just purely disrespectful (to me and to my clients). I put years of my life into drawing and evolving my style, and then years of my life into tattooing (and figuring out which tattoo techniques work for me best) so that I can give my clients unique tattoos that no one else has. It's sad when someone just takes that work for free and profits from it. Pictures/drawings posted on the internet are not free to use for all, copyrights still apply.

This is something I'm honestly so scared of lol. I've been trying to get an apprenticeship for years (my area doesn't have a lot of shops, and they tend to only let their kids/kids' friends become apprentices, or require a master's in fine arts to apprentice), but I've been designing for years, and recently gave up and got a machine to practice on reelskin. I have a ton of designs that I've hand drawn, I'm sure some are insanely similar to what others have done (I have 231 designs, I'm sure others have done extremely similar ones), but without being a legitimate artist I will never be able to fight for my own work in the industry. I have a lot of friends who are waiting for me to get an apprenticeship and move into becoming an actual artist so I can tattoo them as I will never tattoo another person without being in a sterile studio. At least then I would be taken more seriously, but god, I'll be lucky if I can even just start an apprenticeship in the next 10 years.

I would definitely be weirded out if someone appeared with a copy of my most recent tattoo because it is something I came up with with my artist for a very personal reason. Even though it’s based on an illustration from a medical textbook, what was done with it is really unique: it’s a fairly standard representation of a brain but it’s coloured and shaded to reflect the brain damage I sustained following a massive stroke in 1997. I got it to mark my quarter century survival.

I would never copy flash off of someone's instagram page though. I could draw inspiration from it, but it seems rude to tattoo their design especially if they haven't had the chance to do that themselves. I really liked the emoji analogy though! I think when an artist took the time to make the design and they aren't receiving a profit from those who are taking it without consent, then it's a major issue. I feel there's a difference between flash tattoos that have been established in culture getting tattooed on someone and then someone stealing your work and not asking if it's okay, not changing it, and not paying the original creator. Because at the end of the day, that is time they won't get back making the art that could be important to them.

Tattoo studios BUY flash books/sheets, they've purchased the rights to use the images. So whilst it is copying, flash is specifically designed to be copied & it's not stealing anything from anyone - the original artist gets paid and the customer knows they aren't going to be the only person with that design. That's not AT ALL the same thing as taking an artist's work and just straight up copying it without permission or credit. I think flash tattoos are basically made with the idea that they’ll be on more than one person. Same with traditional images, there are only so many ways to draw an eagle or a panther etc. Especially if you stick to 1 specific style. However, if a tattoo is designed with the intention to only be tattood once, for only 1 person to have this specific image on them, then it becomes a problem. It could, however, be the case that the tattoos that are copied a LOT at the moment (the sinner nun, the eyes peeking through the hands, etc) will eventually become ‘traditional designs’ that are super recognizable and treated the same way an anchor or a cry baby is today. Right now, the original artist/tattoo-haver is around to call people out for their shenanigans. At some point, they either stop bothering with it, or simply won’t be there (as morbid is it sounds, it’s a fact if life). Then there is nothing left to keep the image from being a classic staple in a certain style.

The question there is how far does the originality extend? For example the rip off at 1:33 : that's not just iconic character The Joker (owned by not this artist) but specifically Heath Ledger as The Joker who already has a lot of iconic imagery of holding burning playing cards or bills to his face. Obviously the tattoo has been ripped off, even down to the composition of the city below but my question is how much would you need to change to the pre-existing iconic characters that David doesn't own and to the rough posing that was iconic before David drew his version of it. David's design is an original only in the narrow scope of his specific drawing and tatoo. To a much lesser extent but this still applies to things that were more original. The Sinner nun wasn't a pre existing character and using existing existing iconic posing... but it's also normL portrait angle and the concept of "Bad Nun" is old and its a standard nuns habit and inverted crosses are also old as iconography. The word sinner on the Hood and the specific design are "ownable" but everything else is still like an original arrangement of pre-existing iconographies and ideas, so the question still remains that if someone was inspired by the design it is very hard to say just how "inspired" by it they're allowed to be before its crossing into rip-off territory. Personally outside of highly platformed or well established artists taking designs from less established or smaller creators I honestly don't find it that much of an issue. Even practically total rippoffs, if you live in an entirely different area that doesnt overlap clients and you're client knew what was up I'm pretty hard pressed to care. Especially because I've rarely seen an tattooist that never uses any IP or other copyright/trademarked material.

5:35 I think the internet, and all the free media it has given us access to, has made people forget that intellectual property is a real thing. You _can_ own a tattoo. If a tattoo artist designs a fully original work of art, they hold the copyright to that work. Straight up. 9:12 Exactly. Ownership comes into play when a substantial original work of art has been created by an artist who doesn't intend for it to be reproduced, unlike flash, which exists specifically to be copied.

If we want to talk about tattooing the way we talk about other intellectual properties, I would say that old american traditional flash and classic/traditional designs would fall under public domain because they've been around a long ass time AND the original artist is long dead. It's different when you're ripping off work from someone who is still alive and working in the field. I think making an homage to something without completely ripping it off is the best way to go when we're talking artists who are still living and creating new works.

I have a Justin Hartman piece & I’ve found my tattoo posted to Pinterest & it drives me crazy thinking about how some lazy person could be walking around with a tattoo design that I worked closely with the artist on. The piece is personal to me, that’s why I got it, if someone wants a similar design, it’s best to work with a good artist to come up with something that’s unique to you. I do get bummed when I see a cool idea because I know that I can never do that piece & need to keep thinking of something else instead. There’s always someone out there who can make a new idea that I haven’t seen before that’s clever & unique to me. I do have a couple Friday the 13th, $13 dollar flash tattoos. Copying those doesn’t bother me because I understand what the purpose flash is. I knew that going into it & came to terms with the fact that many people will have the same tattoo.

I wonder if these days once you post your tattoo online it sort of becomes flash. If you want to have a unique tattoo why publish it to millions of people as thousands of people globally could be using it not just in countries that speak your language etc. She is correct flash is no longer on tattoo shop walls people are browsing for designs online.

In a way I agree... but these days creative careers have to use social media to stay alive, or thrive. So you almost have to post your work online to advertise. The artists who become "famous" and can charge tons of money generally get that way from having strong social media following (and hopefully good art). That and if you're a random person and post your pics online chances are some will have your tattoos in them. That doesn't mean you want someone to copy your face tattoos identically because you posted a selfies.

A piece of art work has an intellectual property right on them for the original creator. Posting your work online is not legal publishing so no posting your tattoo online doesn’t make it free for all to use. These days the problem is that people are just unable to respect creators and the internet is making everyone feel entitled to all imagery out there. While that’s not how it works.

I think you made maaaany great points. A lot of this is on the person getting a tattoo and as an artist I 1000% understand the frustration of someone getting your art tattooed on them without permission, whether you're a regular artist or a tattoo artist. But on the flip side, it's always going to be entirely out of your control because a) tattoo artists everywhere need to put food on the table and b) people want really cool things they see online tattooed onto them. And some of those people don't understand the nuance of using another artists' work. They just know tattoo artists can take an image and put it on their body. Often I don't think it's done with malice or ill intent, so going after someone and making them feel bad for something permanent on their body that they really liked just seems unnecessary. 🐯

I agree! Like you cant copyright or fully claim an idea or concept like a bee, anchor, flowers, certain pop culture elements ect. because in a way they belong to everyone. Your emoji example was a good reflection of this. Flash is also an exception! An artist will always tell you if they are going to repeat a design. When something is custome, it's not only a copy of an artists original artwork they fabricated, but also a slight to the person who got it. Its exactly like owning an original piece of artwork and having it copied everywhere.

Mostly because in watching this video I kept thinking about I sometimes see tattoo artists posting flash sheets but updating them with which designs have been taken and which are still available, which is so different compared to the constant designs on a wall many people share. I'd love to learn more about how that changed and why these different models are both called flash :)

I think that if you or your tattoo artist put your tattoo on the internet, you’ve got to accept that it will be copied. In a perfect world, customers and artists wouldn’t blatantly steal other people’s ideas, but that isn’t a realistic expectation. As always, comparison is the thief of joy. Don’t worry about what other people do, you can’t control that, just enjoy the original tattoo you love. ❤

Having been working in a private studio for a while, I can definitely see the change and shift in what a shop looks like and how it has evolved from the classic walk in shop. I know personally for myself and my clients, a lot of the time they look for artists out of private studios because they feel safer doing so. I know a lot of queer or AFAB people who have felt unsafe just walking into an old school shop, so I really hope this change makes the entire community work harder at creating healthy, consensual spaces.

Most tattooing IS copying of someone’s art. We used to get paid royalties for our work published in license source catalogs. These were some of my first art sales, published in materials for tattoo shops & mainstream print magazines & books sold in retailers like Barnes & Noble. Mine were black & gray “western comic style” traditional subjects like mermaids, angels, animals, pirates, etc. in dynamic poses with charming faces & big expressive eyes. Think Marvel meets Lisa Frank. 3 of my designs - an angel, mermaid & sexy devil - were popular enough that I received royalties for years. Maybe this sounds wild now, in modern times when customers just show the artist a pic they found online. But “tattoo source” was an actual art/ design market we sold to. Of all the art I’ve sold, the tattoo source work has a special place in my heart because it’s amazing that people get it on their bodies. It’s like a bond between the artist & customer, even though we’ve never met ❤

I feel like artists copying each others' commonly tattooed works is maybe a bit annoying, but not a real issue. That's the kind of thing that has always happened, and is a normal part of art in general. Where I draw the line is when a client commissions or creates a unique piece of art that has personal meaning to them, and somebody copies it. At that point, you're not just stealing art, you're potentially harming somebody.

The only thing that could make that weird to me, is if the artist would did the recreation does not credit the original inspiration of the artwork if they post it or are asked about it.

@@suzukiriyumekoOh, you can definitely blame the client in my opinion. You should never feel entitled to someone else’s art work or tattoo no matter how perfect it suits you. Get a suiting flash tattoo instead if you don’t want your tattoo custom made for you to have that special meaning you want. Copying a custom tattoo is just simply distasteful towards the artist and to the original customer who got the tattoo design done and paid for the design work to be special for them. A recreation is not taking inspiration, it is copying. Inspiration is when you look at a piece of work and make something out of it that’s new and your own and not the exact same as the original work.

I got my first tattoo for my birthday. It's a pentagram, made of twigs, and it has a few leaves and flowers. It's fairly small, and yes, it's based on an image from internet. Not an exact copy, but similar enough that you could clearly recognize the image if you know the original. But this does qualify as a flash tattoo, so I'm not bothered by it being a copy. My next however will be quite a bit bigger, and it'll be something I'll design myself. It has a LOT of meaning for me, and I completely agree that this would be something that you shouldn't copy. You don't copy a portrait of some stranger's relatives, right? Then why would you copy other custom art that holds deep emotional values for the designer? Thank you for making these video's. I have a blast watching you review things, and I'm learning a LOT from all the information you give.

I got both of my tattoos in the early-to-mid 2000s, and I just rolled up into a nearby tattoo shop, no research whatsoever, and got em. So I like the idea that more people nowadays are maybe putting some effort into looking for a specific artist, to do a specific style, or at the very least, they’re able to browse a gallery of the artist’s work before getting inked. My tats are both text, and fairly small, but damn. The first one was a huge mess as soon as I got it; it’s crooked, and I needed to go back in & get it retouched as soon as it healed, because it was fading and patchy. Certainly you can still have bad experiences with private studios, but I also think that they require more research & effort, so you can’t swing by one night after work, and get a stupid saying that you’ll regret almost immediately…both of my tats were impulsive, after-work decisions lol

I think if it’s generic old school flash or specifically repeatable flash then there’s not a problem. I have a tiny pigeon from a repeatable flash but it was a gap filler for me and I don’t mind someone else might get the same one. When it comes to unique custom designs that’s when the problem starts. And I definitely do judge artist who don’t turn their clients away when they request an exact copy of a tattoo that someone else “wears”. But most of the times these customers punish themselves cos they end up with a bad looking tattoo and the artist gets called out on social media. 🐯

Honestly, ai simply agree with everything you said. I'm planning a really unique tattoo to me, blending different references to all things i like, and i woudn't like to see it on another person bcs it's really personal, just like i never post my tattoo on instagram so ppl can't copy it. But pinterst tattos, flash tattoos, tradicional and etc are meant to be copied, i think its totally fine too. Also, I have a lot of fun with Daniel's videos, but the difference between his work and the copies is that was made by less experient/skilled arts, i donk think he would show the ones who actually get it in the same level or similar. But, also, maybe these ppl don't even would accept to copy another original work. There'a a lot of designs that if you don't expect to see in another bodies you are crazy. Lions, tigers, watches, ShenLong from Dragon Ball, Sharingans from naruto, and list goes on. Mostly designs ppl think are unique, arent. The real unique shit is the ones that artist draw or create thenselves mixing references, styles that normaly don't are aligned. like that gu who blends pop culture with neoclassical paintings and etc.

great video, i agree 100%. i have tattoo designs on my body that are in no way original to me, and i would find it a cool experience too meet someone who also has them (the original ghost in the shell movie poster design and some danse macabre skeletons). for the flipside, you often hear and/or think "well the quality of the copies usually sucks anyway"; sadly that logic goes completely out the window in cases of simple but custom tattoos & custom placements. i feel so bad for the model whose face tattoos were copied. face tattoos in particular are so central to your image and identity, and they usually have to be simple enough for readability. i have no respect for the people who caused him to turn off the comments.

I think it all comes down to how personalized the tattoo is. I have a couple of pretty generic tattoos that I got at flashes, one of them I even saw in one of the images here, so I wouldn’t be mad if I saw it on someone else. However, I also have many pieces that have been designed exclusively for me. I have one that’s in reference to my favorite anime, I drew it and I gave it to the tattoo artist to make it good (lol), so if I saw someone else with the exact tattoo it would clearly be stolen because it’s something made from scratch. I have another one that was designed by the tattoo artist but made by my specifications, with the images of my pets and me in a very stylistic way, so it’s a very personal tattoo. It’s just like with any art, ideas and concepts cannot be stolen, but when you personalize it then that can be stolen.

i think there's also some confusion when it comes to "flash" because a lot of tattoo artists these days who don't have traditional styles call their pre-made designs in their own style also "flash". so some flash i have i would not want to see someone else with because it was still original. the tattoo artists usually say if the flash is repeatable or not. sometimes it's made to be tattooed once in colour and once in black.

All of my work is custom, not flash, and I would be annoyed if anyone copied anything and would feel it was wrong (and I would be especially annoyed for my artist(s)). Flash however, is for copying. Flash, on the walls, in traditional shops to pick out is there for the taking and copying. That said, people looking at tattoos on Pinterest, or other sites, need to be careful and know whether or not that is a custom drawn piece.

On the other side there are a lot of tattoo artists that just copy others work and try and pass it off as their own. I understand all sides, but I would like to say that i think it is unrealistic to say people have to have ONLY the og artist do their own work on you because think about the people who want to get tattoos done, but cannot afford a nice quality tattoo AND to book a flight to Italy to get tattooed by an artist (like the nun tat). I also draw and I can totally get how it would be annoying/frustrating to see your work stolen, but also if someone just wants that tattoo because they love it, I think we all need to be a little more understanding of people's situations. Saying just because someone cannot afford to pay the original artist or possibly even fly meet the original artist doesn't mean they shouldn't be able to get a piece of art on their body that speaks to them in some way. Especially when you share it online where millions are exposed to it and love it. I DO think that more tattoo artists that do "copy" tattoos, should mention the original artist and give credit where it is due. Sad THAT can't happen.

The problem with the original tattoo standard that many artists say they want every artist to adhear to is that the vast majority of clients come in wanting pre selected pictures of the symbol or tattoo. They come in with a tattoo vector or a picture of a symbol, or use their phone to look up the tattoo design and in 98% of the time they want it completely identical to the stencil. If you don't do it that way they don't want it on their body and will go elsewhere. You may hold this standard but it's their body and they may not want it reimagined. And taking a stencil and changing the shading a bit or the colors is not original.

To my surprise it didnt hurt like the outline. The tattooist had a wierd way of putting the colour in something thats never been repeated and the tattoo looked just like merging in a coloured pencil picture, unfortunately it faded and I thought the colour could be touched up and lost the subtle gradients.

One of my favorite things about tattoo is that its not regulated. I get artists being rightfully upset but the pros is the people benefit.

As a (regular) artist who wants to learn how to tattoo, I would not care if people copied my work. I'd take it as a compliment and proof I did good yknow. plus, even though my purpose will be creating original art, It should first be pleasing a client. it's their body they can get whatever markings they want on it. imagine getting upset bc someone copied your earing. Art is made to be shared and copied. and I would probably not work with clients who want a one to one copy of something else bc I want to create something unique but I don't blame the clients for wanting exactly the same. it's not very original or fun but as long as it's just one tattoo and not copying someone completely to the point it's creepy I'm fine with it. even if there is a person waking around with exactly the same tattoos as you that's kinda badass. I bet you have great tattoos and style. I would be so honored if a design I came up with was tattooed on so many people by so many different artist (The Sinner Nun tattoo by Ccyle)
