In my personal opinion, the Taurus 856 Defender would make an excellent first choice for a defensive revolver, and would make an excellent choice for those who would like to expand their current .38 Special revolver collection.
The Taurus Defender with Tungsten Cerakote finish, tritium front night sight, and finger-groove walnut grips from the Altamont Company makes for a fine revolver.

Note ⚠️.. I own the same 856 defender with the Altimont wood grips and I found the speed loader was hard to use I had to take the left grip panel off and grind it down a little on my grinder.. I then took some oil and even the color of the wood grip out again you can't even notice it's been ground down but I easily use a speed loader now

Now this is the video I've been looking for. I have that exact same defender and was curious about the executive grade. But they just came out with the 692 executive grade and I may go for that one but I'm worried they may be pricey
@RangeRoninChronicles
@RangeRoninChronicles 2 ай бұрын
Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. You are correct about the 692 Executive Grade revolver being expensive; $1,106.99 MSRP (according to the website). I have the 627 Tracker (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jq6Ufsuhqa6qqqs.html), and the 856 Executive Grade (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fal7qqubycXHfXk.html). Both are fine revolvers. With that said, I do like the "porting' feature of the 627 Tracker and 692, as the porting does help (somewhat) in the felt recoil and muzzle lift departments when firing full-load .357 magnum. The capability of the 692 to fire 9mm cartridges may be a plus, and a selling point, but I think that the jury is still out on that. For me, the 692 is a bit too pricey for my blood. It may well be worth the cost, and if Taurus would lend me one for review I would let them (and my viewers) know if it is.

The key holing is vertical ,which may be caused by a velocity deficiency. If it were diagonal or moving side to side ,I would assume it were twist rate to weight issue ; not stabilizing the projectile. Perhaps the load is soft in the ammo and / or the gap between the cylinder and forcing the cone is bleeding off too much pressure. It does produce quite a bit of flash from the forcing cone area. Key holing isn't a great concern under ten yards or in close rage self-defense situations. May reduce over penetration. However, at longer distances, it may have a negative effect on the overall accuracy of the projectile.

I noticed some key holing which is probably bullet/powder combination adjustment required. in my collection I've added tracker 44mag, pt845 in 45acp, 2 g2c pistols 9mm,spectrum 380acp, 2 605 defenders 357mag. a rossi brawler 45colt/ 410single shot pistol actually owned by Taurus. not much factory ammunition shot in them ,about all my reloads.mine work flawlessly, accurately with no problem.plus with the help of o-rings I shoot 45acp in the single shot brawler 45colt/410. the factory gives no recommendations for or against it. so I do this on my own. I highly recommend Taurus/ Ross firearms. I don't get paid for any of this .papa wishing you well 😊
@RangeRoninChronicles
@RangeRoninChronicles 6 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting. You are right about the key-holing. I shoot factory ammunition. There si more to key-holing than bullt/powder combination: There are several potential causes for keyholing: (1). Improper Bullet Diameter: If the bullet’s diameter doesn’t properly match the barrel’s bore diameter, it might not stabilize effectively, resulting in ke-yholing. (2). Incorrect Twist Rate: Firearms barrels have a specific twist rate that helps stabilize the bullet. If the twist rate is not appropriate for the bullet’s length and weight, it can result in key-holing. (3). Muzzle Damage: Damage near the muzzle of the barrel can destabilize the bullet as it exits, leading to key-holing. (I discount this with the new firearms that I review). (4). Suboptimal Bullet Design: In some cases, the bullet design itself might be flawed, making stabilization during flight challenging. Bullet-to-barrel sizing is important and can affect stabilization. This is where hand-loading can be a plus, as the bullet can be sized/selected to the bore. Most ammunition coming out of the factories are sized generic to the caiber, and which may not work perfectly with all barrel bores, which is why we spend a lot of time and money trying to find the ammunition that shoots well out of our guns. (5). Velocity Issues: Bullets that are fired at velocities too low may not gain sufficient rotational speed to stabilize. I try not to endorse ammunition. I do try to tell what ammunition that I am using for the review, but that is not an endorsement. I would rather the viewer draw their own conclusions. What may have not worked in my gun, may work fine in your gun of the same manufacturer and caliber or even with one of different manufacturer but the same caliber. The standard for 9mm ammunition has been the 124-grain bullet; whereas, in .445 ACP, the standard is 230-grain. But both of these rounds may not work well out of different barrels and barrel lengths. For example, I have a Glock G19 that will shoot 147-grain perfectly with one manufacturer, but not 147-grain of another manufacturer; the same is true of 124-grain. But the same 147-grain that would not perform through the G19 would perform perfectly in my G17 and G17L. In short, the consumer (us gun and ammo buyers) become the beta testers for those guns and the ammunition that we are feeding through them. It cost us money, time, and effort to find what works in our firearms - and the ammunition manufacturers love us for it.

I wish you got into the difference of trigger pulls. Apparently, Taurus has fine-tuned the trigger on the Executive Grade. I was wondering if you felt much of a difference in the actual trigger pull. Were the differences noteworthy?
@RangeRoninChronicles
@RangeRoninChronicles 5 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching. For the 'Executive' revolver, the double-action trigger pull weight on this particular revolver is 10-pounds, 13.5-ounces, but it is a smooth 10-pounds, 13.5-ounces. There is a slight amount of stacking and a very slight amount of tensioned free-play before the real trigger pull weight is felt. For the 'Defender', single-action trigger pull was 3-pounds 9.7-ounces with a five-pull average. The double action weight is a consistent and somewhat surprising 11 3/4 pounds. In my fantasy, I see the Defender grips on the Executive and also the Defender front sight on the Executive, which would make the Executive a very nice defensive handgun. The target grips of the Executive, while nice, negate the use of a speed-loader. But back to your question. The Executive trigger was smoother than that of the Defender, but not enough for me to choose the Executive over the Defender as a carry companion.

@RangeRoninChronicles
@RangeRoninChronicles 9 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching and for your question. I believe that it is the Armscor ammunition. The Georgia Arms +P ammo did fine - no key-holing. I have fired Remington through it since with no issue. I have had issues with Armscor ammunition in the past - in their own firearms of all things. I think that in this case (no pun intended), there may have been several factors at play: (1.) The Target was too close, (2.) The bullets may have been undersized and not engaging the rifling properly, (3.) The rifling may not be adequate of the shape of the bullet (not enough flat). The Armscor ammunition that I was using is very cone-shaped and I have no idea how much body is actually part of the bullet. The Georgia Arms and Remington ammunition has a more conventional ogive and shape, which may be why they did not keyhole; there is enough bullet material to catch the rifling. I am not a ballistics expert so I am only speculating here. I may try the Armscor in a different revolver with a longer barrel just to see if the key-holing goes away. A curious mind is running amok!

The bullets may have been undersized and not engaging the rifling properly, (3.) The rifling may not be adequate of the shape of the bullet (not enough flat)." I agree. I have some 9mm polymer coated 115gr. lead round nose that is .357 inches in diameter that my 9mm pistols don't like however I have loaded those up in the .38Spl. and will see how they do in it since that diameter is closer to a .38Spl. or a .357 Magnum than 9mm that is .355-.356 in diameter. I like the fact that revolvers don't care what ammo you feed them but like any other gun the bullet diameter is what counts where it grips the rifling. Bullet ogive may have a role also in where the rifling either grips the bullet or does not grip the bullet. In rare cases yes the target can be too close before a bullet stabilizes in flight but that is usually more akin to higher velocities in rifles than pistols. Thanks for sharing. On a side note, polygonal rifled barrels do not shoot lead bullets without them being either jacketed or coated because unlike traditional rifled barrels that have lands and grooves that cut the bullet, polygonal rifled barrels have hills and valleys where lead can be pushed rather than cut causing bullet skip and that causes lead to build up rapidly, loss of accuracy, and key holing. I prefer traditional rifle barrels for the reason that I can shoot any bullet coated, jacketed, or plain lead that I cannot do in polygonal rifled barrels. Manufacturers like polygonal rifled barrels because of ease of manufacturing over traditional rifling. Glock and some Bersa barrels are polygonal rifled barrels.

@@rbm6184 Thank you for sharing - it matters. I have not yet had the chance to try out a different brand of (range) ammunition through this revolver. As I noticed during the range session, however, is that the Sig Sauer ammunition did not key-hole. That tells me something. Actually, key-holing at combat distances is not a critical factor. Granted, some penetration may be less, but the wound channel is greater. With that said, I am going to try the Armscor ammunition in a different revolver with a long barrel length just out of curiosity. I'll probably do a Part 2 - shooting, with different ammunition, at some time.

@RangeRoninChronicles
@RangeRoninChronicles 4 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching and for your comment. My comment, as it were, was based on the teaching of Massad Ayoob. Personally, I know of no one ever prosecuted for using single-action with a DA/SA revolver. My training, as a former LEO, involved the legal ramifications in a court of law of using single-action with a DA/SA revolver. In short, we were trained in double-action only. It was more of a matter regarding department liability. I don't give legal advice; I pass on what I was trained in doing. If you want to use single-action with a DA/SA revolver, you go right ahead if that's your prerogative. So, please refrain from submitting your garbage comments unless they are backed by fact, and if it is simply a matter of a difference in opinion - well, I have mine and you have yours. The fact is that many have used single-action during a good shooting (not that any shooting is good), and a lot of them took place before double-action revolvers were available. With that said, many use a single-action revolver for self-defense. But that begs the question, "Why would anyone use a single-action revolver when modern DA/SA or DAO revolvers exists?" But that a different topic. When it comes down to it, it will not be whether you used single-action or double-action, it will be whether you were justified in using deadly force against another individual regardless of what mode of operation the gun was in. We can debate if you like.
