Impressed by how you manage to locate some of these areas, the one where he is on the telephone for instance. Also sad that despite looking less clean, everything in the 70s had more charm

I wish I could go back in time and experience New York in the past. The city is so dull with all the hipster cafés and what not, compared to how it was. Sure crime was worse, poverty and so on, but that is also what made it so exciting.

Blows me away how almost everything is completely different. If you time-warped someone from 1975 to today, they would have no idea where they were. A lot of history gone.

Thanks for this upload. Taxi Driver is one of my top 5 films of all time and just like my home town of London everything seems cleaner and more colourful now compared to the 60s/70s.

Safety and liability. New Safety laws were put in place to keep objects from falling from the building. Many of NYC buildings are pushing a century mark or even older. The bricks or the outer layers of these buildings needs repairs.

2:50 It's funny how it was remodeled to look vintage, but back in the day, it looked kind of clinical, like a hospital hallway. People who pass through that hall today probably marvel at the vintage look.... imagining Sullivan himself out there with a cigarette, talking business with a staff member....or men and women in dress hats walking through. They don't realize that back the day, it was just white walls and strip lights.

It wasn't remodeled, per say. What's fascinating is that when Taxi Driver was filmed and Travis walked down that hall, the facade and attention to detail was just hidden, obscured. Notice how they built a low hanging ceiling to cover the 1800s building detail. So in short, that archway had always been there; recent times/redevelopment unironically revealed them to the public eye. It seems to be the case for many buildings during the 70s-80s and explains why they looked so different then. In the 70s, desires and temptations of the flesh (drugs, prostitution, pornography) created a dynamic of concealment for these old structures, including their detail and symbolism. An unconscious affair worked to rebrand these buildings: again, facades were hidden, archways, lower level entrances, statues, engravings, etc - all out of the way, in the name of the perverted modernization of the 70s. Today, we see something very similar taking place. Gentrification is fueled by the same force, so to speak. Now instead of the porn theaters, it is the scaffolds.. Making way for more unconcious-driven effort for concealment of the past, and scrambling for the future... all the while defying the present. The west and perhaps the whole world has been running in place since the fall of Adam & Eve.

Yet then when the city is able to wear it's "heart" on it's sleeve, it is the heart of darkness; demonic. NYC was hell then, and hell now - both in complete opposite ways, but maybe some old timers will get what I'm sayin' here.

I like these vids, but you missed mentioning a few places in th French Connection vid, you failed to mention the chase being on 86th Street and then on New Utrecht Avenue. It started on Stillwell, then on 86th, then he cut the turn and almost hit the woman on New Utrecht 😮

Because I grew up here, 1975 seems warmer, more real and homey to me. The bottom seems cold, almost like a different place (I left in '86 when I joined the military)

Things looked a lot dirtier back in the 70's...Everything's glossier now...glass & steel everywhere...Slowly but surely it's polished that old-skool grime away...Although some of the décor such as fascia's and pillars can still be spotted....

Just FYI -- I believe you made an error with the movie theater location which took place at the Lyric on 42nd street and not 41st as depicted in the video.

I agree with you. You mean the scene where Betsy and Travis come out of the adult theater and Cybill shepherd says to Deniro the expletive. That's right on 42 street. Can't tell whether it's the nirth or south side.

@@user-er3ri6sc3j Yeah. They were exiting the Lyric Theatre which was on the north side of 42nd. In reverse shot, you can see Cine 42 across the street, which was located on the south side of 42nd, next to the Amsterdam Theatre.

New York looked so much more iconic and had so much more character and grittiness, it actually matched the atmosphere back than so perfectly. Nowadays it just seems so generic bland, dull, lifeless.
