My gift recommendation is to Not get someone yarn unless they've picked it out themselves - we're very picky! My friend got me yarn in a fiber i don't like and colors I don't like a few years ago and I still haven't used it T-T

I had a friend give me 6 skeins of yarn that out of all the yarn on this earth is one that I have never liked and I will never use. It is absolutely awful! It was so sweet of her to get it for me though so I was gracious and thanked her so much.

It really depends on how well the yarn giver knows the yarn recipient and if the giver is a fellow fiber lover who understands the recipient’s preferences.

Speaking of self striping yarns, I'll put in a plug for a local-to-me dyer Fibernymph Dyeworks. She makes "inversibles" where one sock (or glove or whatever) will have large stripes in one color and skinny stripes in the other and the other sock will be the reverse. It's fun to see how long it takes someone to notice that your socks are fraternal twins.

You've recommended baskets and bags. I sew. My daughter in law knits. She has gifted knitted baskets for me, from big enuf to hold skeins of yarn to small for my clips. And since I sew, I should make her some bags! So thanks for that idea!

A little sad we can't enter if not a paid Patreon.. oh well. I have noticed a gradual shift with all the wonderful people I follow.. all seem to be moving to put most of their great content onto paid Patreon. This makes is rather unaffordable for many of us.. and whilst I certainly appreciate all the hard work that is put into making these podcasts, I can't help but feel that more and more, this platform is used to build followers, and then move to being paid for doing what you've been doing for years. I'm kind of disappointed in this trend!

What I want people can't buy for me. I want the knowledge and the ability to make socks like I see everybody else make perfect, even, beautiful socks. I want to make a sweater. You can't buy me those things. I have to learn how to do them myself. I wish you could but you can't. But that's really what I want as a knitter. I want ability, knowledge and skill.

Jennifer sock knitting is way easier than it first appears. I would recommend you tube earthtone girls no fear sock knitting is a great step by step resource. Crazy sock lady also has tutorials on you tube. If possible I would be happy to help you. I typically knit a pair every month. There are many free patterns on Ravelry. DK weight are also a bit quicker and on larger needles than fingering weight socks.

Many yarn shops offer classes. I think a lesson for a sock class would be a great idea.
@JustWriter

Socks are just a tube with a bend in them; you do this with short rows. Once you learn one of the many ways to do that, a world of knitting opens up to you, techniques like mitering, ripples, creating more room in your sweaters called darts, adding brims to beanies, AND MORE. BUT, there are ways to make socks WITHOUT short rows too! There's one way, where you just knit a tube, cut it up, and sew it into the right shape.

Also, if you like lace socks, here on YT there are a couple tutorials done by: handmade by florence. She really knows which yarns work for socks and which ones don't. She has a bunch of tips too, some on making sturdier socks.

This is a really great idea for a video ramble. You're absolutely right that most crafters are pre-occupied with creating gifts rather than also thinking of themselves and what would enhance their crafting experience. Fun video as usual!

Getting gifts for knitters is hard. I have specific projects I want to work on with specific yarns and colors and work on one project at a time, so getting a random yarn wouldn’t be something I’d want as I don’t have much space to store something I won’t use right away or if ever. A gift card would be great so I could pick out yarns for the projects I want to do would be perfect. My gift to myself this year, which was a combo birthday/Christmas gift was a set of interchangeable Chiaogoo needles, it’s something I’ve really been wanting. When it comes to knitting, I’d rather get what I need or really want myself than get something I won’t have a use for. One of the most useful things in my collection has been the big Vogue Knitting guide book. I reference it with almost every project I make. So many tutorials are online now, I’m not sure how useful it would be, but I love referencing a book instead of searching for a video. Another item that was a great buy was a set of decorative embroidery scissors, they are super sharp, inexpensive, and small and have been a huge upgrade from the cheap snips I had been using.

As much as I love self striping yarn I really prefer the versatility of solid or semi-tonal yarns. I can't throw a self striping yarn into colorwork easily, but a black, white, or neutral solid is always able to be contrast cuffs, heels, and toes. Or even cuffs or contrasts for other projects like hats. All my stitch markers are in jars with lids, a ceramic bowl is asking to be eaten by a cat lol

I read Three Bags Full a few years ago when a knitting friend loaned me her copy. I loved it! And I agree with your other recommendations as well. My adult children have gifted me yarn multiple times and each time it has been something in my wheelhouse. The only yarn I received that I didn’t like was from my sister-in-law who chose her favorite color (tan with a greenish undertone), a color that I HATE, in a yarn that I do like. After thinking about it for awhile, I decided that instead of over dyeing it, I would give it to a knitting friend who loves the color. Moral of this: gifting yarn works as long as you gear the gift to the recipient’s tastes, not your own (actually, this works for any gift giving).

There's a very good chance I may be getting a tablet for Christmas and I have seriously thought about getting Knit Companion for the tablet but I have not heard very many positive things about it, especially the free version. I even tried to get my son to help me download the free version onto my laptop and he couldn't do it. So I'm hoping that even the free version might be easier to download on a tablet than on the laptop. And I haven't looked deep enough into the pro version to figure out if it's worth investing in it. Plus as far as I know, it's an every year subscription, so it's not a one time thing, so that's a hefty cost. But I am tempted to perhaps try it. But I'm also not sure I'm smart enough to figure out how to use the thing properly.

Three Bags Full sounds great, but at least in the UK it's not available on kindle and the only physical copies are either over £30 (mass market paperback) or £156!!!! (also paperback but presumably printed on gold leaf). There are a few used options - all over £17 and the pic is of a German version, which my language skills wouldn't be sufficient for, so I don't feel like risking it. Bah. (Or Baaaa!)

Somehow back in the dark ages an idea spread that giving cash was vulgar and gift cards were born. I cannot express how presumptive this is. I do not want to be told where to shop. If you want the recipient to choose their own gift give something with a president or monarchs picture on it, a universal gift card. There is nothing worse than wanting something when your gift card is from the wrong store. i

I would say this depends on the person, getting cash for me feels very thoughtless and ends up just going into my bank account. Which I appreciate it just never feels like that person thought about what I would like. Just money only makes sense to me in specific circumstances (weddings, graduation etc.) where the purpose of the gift is to give someone a leg up on the next part of their life or the individual person just really prefers straight up cash.

I don't know if I'm misunderstanding the rules for the giveaway. Are you saying that only patreons may enter? That's kind of hard for seniors like me, living on a pension. But, I suppose the contest is for US residents only anyway...

I think it’s open to everyone (in fact the bag maker is from Ontario Canada) but there seems to be a problem with non paying Patreon members adding a comment. Maybe she’ll be able to get it figured out but in the mean time I’d just go ahead and add one here.

Hmmmmmmm, guess I’m out. Not doing the Patreon thing. And really not happy with this. My husband is retired and we have to watch our money. I can’t afford to “pay” to watch all my favorite KZfaqrs.

Very disagree with cash or gift cards. They are a huge cop out and require zero thought.

Funny how different we can be. I LOVE receiving gift cards since I really enjoy the shopping aspect as well as whatever it is that I buy, so for me gift cards are a 2 in 1 gift. 😁

Last year for my birthday I just asked a donation to a "yarn jar", I ended up going to the yarn store with like €200,- or so and it was the best day ever 😍

I love gift cards. I can choose for myself and also get to enjoy the shopping pleasure. 2 for 1 for me. Some like that and some don’t. As someone said, we are all different and that’s ok.

I told my family to get me gift cards to my LYS. I want to get a sweater quantity of yarn but I don't want to pay for it!! Hahaha

For anyone who doesn’t want to explain why they prefer one yarn over another and one color over others etc etc, gift cards are great (and mean that a gift won’t go to waste if you potentially pick the wrong thing!) Sure it can be a little impersonal but sometimes picking the right gift card says a lot, like if someone got me a gift card to an online shop that has spinning fiber that would show incredible interest in me and my newest fiber hobby, or a gift card to etsy with a note “for some spinning fiber” would be personal as well 🤷🏻‍♀️ it’s possible to have a gift card be personal! (Multibillion dollar organizations don’t count obviously lol)
