About Ronan, Maya and Taylor never got together to write the song. Taylor got in contact with Maya to ask for permission to write a song about Ronan, and gave all the proceeds from the song to Cancer research. Once the song was finished Taylor decided to give Maya writing credits because she took lots of things from Maya's blog.

In case you didn't know Begin Again ends the standard version of Red and State of Grace Acoustic ends the deluxe version. Ronan was originally a single put out during the Red era but it was put on Red TV. Also her songs for the Hunger Games soundtrack, Safe and Sound and Eyes Open, are considered part of the Red era so you can react to those if you want!

Part of me thinks that Taylor was even more eager for Jake to come to her 21st birthday because she yearned to be seen as an adult by him. She references frequently in Red how he implied that if she was closer to his age, that he would've taken the relationship more seriously (despite knowing her age when they started dating).
@cynthiavalencia724
@cynthiavalencia724 5 ай бұрын
I agree. I also think he didn’t want to be seen with a bunch or 20/21 year olds at a birthday party. I just wish he hadn’t told her he’d be there. It’s crazy to me that he didn’t even tell her ahead of time he wasn’t gonna show up bc then at least she could have had a better time not staring at the door all night. Heartbreaking.

I really feel like it was one of those things where...yeah her birthday party was monumental but it's like the straw that broke the camels back. It's the moment she knew that this wouldn't work out. The fact that he promised and probably knew how much it meant but still didn't bother to show up made her reflect on the entire relationship.

After the Stay Stay Stay slander I was so ready to hear Starlight and Girl at Home being dunked on. Resigned to it. But no. I'm THRILLED thank you for appreciating those songs. That vivid picture you have of Girl at Home is EXACTLY why I like the song and EXACTLY why I think the production change was so good.

Holy ground always leaves me reflective because I always remember her singing at the f1 event in 2016 when the whole world was already canceling her and this performance always makes me emotional because it seems like she was trying to absorb everything because she knew that maybe that would be the last show she would do in her life (and she also added some rock and the music was even better)

Girl at Home was a last minute addition to the deluxe version of the original album. It was originally very minimal and acoustic as far as production goes. It’s the only Taylor’s Version so far to have that kind of a “glow up” so to speak. That’s probably why you feel like that song was just randomly dropped onto the album lol
@HeatherJames88
@HeatherJames88 5 ай бұрын
Definitely not a glow up. I like the original uncompleted version.

@Ariesguy41499 5 ай бұрын
Kinda agree with the other commenters as someone who was one of the few people who really enjoyed the original I honestly don’t think it’s a glow up and personally never listen to it cause I feel like the production is kinda out of place both for the narrative of the story and the album in general. Of course I’m not really a fan of Elvira’s production on any of the Taylor songs she’s worked on so maybe it’s just a me thing lol

Didn't Taylor say somewhere that the TV production is closer to what she had always wanted, but her label made her do it the original way to hit their "country music" quota? I swear I read that somewhere

TS said in an interview in 2013 that Sad Beautiful Tragic is abt her parents marriage and then divorce. They got divorced in 2011 but kept co-parenting her and her brother Austin. She said that although it was beautiful while it lasted, it was not meant to be as a marriage. The only time she performed the song at the RED tour she said "This is a song that I wrote about how just because something is over doesn't mean it wasn't incredibly beautiful. Cause another lesson I've learned is that not all stories have a happy ending and you have to learn how to deal with that. This is a song about a story that didn't end so happily, but it was still supposed to happen."

In old releases, Taylor would include hidden messages in her physical copies and would hint to the meaning or inspiration. Here are mine and some fan theories 11. "Holy Ground" ~ Secret Message- “When you came to the show in SD” Holy ground is as a song is Taylor look in back and reminiscing on her relationship with ex Joe Jonas after the anger has faded and she can think how good the good times were. This is one of the big fan favourites 12. "Sad Beautiful Tragic" ~Secret Message- “While you were on a train” Taylor wrote this on the bus during her Speak Now tour reflecting back on a relationship (Taylor confirmed) and is speculated to be about Taylor Lautner. She admits to being the one in fault of the relationship ending in Back to December so the line “you’ve got your demons and darling they all look like me” makes fans speculate but was never confirmed. 13. "The Lucky One" ~ “Wouldn’t you like to know” The secret message seems to be referring to the fact that the subject of the song wanted out. It has been rumoured that she might be referring to Juni Mitchell and or Kim Wilde and Taylor relates her life to theirs in the last verse. 14. "Everything Has Changed feat. Ed Sheeran" ~Secret Message- “Hy annis Port” This song is highly speculated to be about her relationship with Connor Kennedy but can also be about her friendship with featured singer Ed Sheeran. Fun face, the two singers wrote either this or their vault song on Taylor’s trampoline. 15. "Starlight" ~Secret Message- “For Ethel” As the secret message says, this is a song written for Ethel Kennedy inspired by a picture of Ethel and Bobby Kennedy. She wrote it and played it for Ethel before her relationship with their grandsons Connor Kennedy. 16. "Begin Again" ~Secret Message- “I wear heels now”Merely as song about starting over after being stuck in a toxic relationship and finding hope again. Another song likely about the start of her relationship with Connor after getting out of the relationship with Jake. (End of standard) 17. "The Moment I Knew" ~ No secret message but clearly referring to Jake missing her 21st without communicating he had an audition and would not make it. 18. "Come Back...Be Here" ~)•No secret message but a song about feeling a fast connection with someone but having to deal with the long distance. Likely about Harry Styles and they both being constantly not in the same place because of their stardom. 19. "Girl at Home" ~No secret message just a song talking about some unnamed scum at either a Party or club which the beat and production resembles something you’d hear at either. Basically, don’t cheat. 20. "State of Grace Acoustic Version" ~a pretty version of earlier opening song. Taylor did say that this song can be both an opener or a closer because as a song it bookends what this album is about. It also closes the Deluxe Edition of the original release. 21. "Ronan" ~Song devoted to a family that lost their 3 year old to cancer named Ronan that Taylor wrote based off the blog Miya (Roman’s mother) wrote and Taylor ended up giving her writing credits for how much she took from her blog. All proceeds from the song went towards fighting childhood cancer. It is one of the only songs she will not play live other than one fundraising concert for the charity.

Haven’t listened to Ronan in literal YEARS. It was hard to listen to back when it came out but now I’ve got a son of my own, who turns 2 in march, and the song hit me to my core. And I’ve always loved when a song hits me emotionally and I can cry to it, but listening to Ronan is something completely different. Even though it is a very beautiful song, I don’t think I will listen to it ever again.

The Lucky One is about Joni Mitchell and how Taylor understands what she went through as she's now in the spotlight and the media has smeared her and trashes her... you're right that it parallels Taylor up until the point of Joni taking the money and running.

Great reaction; I always really appreciate your thoughts and how articulate you are. Thank you. In case no one in the comments has already mentioned it, there's a piano version of Holy Ground that Taylor recorded in the BBC Live Lounge in 2019 (she also covered Can't Stop Loving You by Phil Collins in the same set!) and it's very different to the album version you've heard here. I highly recommend you give it a listen; it's all on KZfaq. The original (aka stolen) version of Girl at Home is also really different to the Taylor's Version. And Ed Sheeran pops up a bit on various Taylor tracks because they're really good friends and their voices harmonise so well -- when you do the music video for Everything Has Changed, be sure to follow it up with the music video for The Joker and The Queen, which is an Ed Sheeran feat. Taylor Swift track from 2022 -- the music video stars the same actors, just years later. The camera work is also very clever when comparing the two videos. Thanks again! :) ETA: My favourite track on RED is Begin Again.

I can't tell you how excited I got when I saw this video pop up. This is the album that made me a Swiftie and it will always hold a very special place for me in her discography. I still think it is one of her best albums. I love how you point out specific instruments that you hear. I am SUCH a lyrics person that sometimes that stuff can pass me by. I appreciate getting to pay attention to that aspect of the song. Your story of 'A Girl at Home' had me laughing. I know I've been in that situation where i look at a friend and go 'What are you DOING??' 😂 I don't know who that song is about, but im wondering if maybe that sound is similar to the music they were putting out at the time? It sonically seems so out of left field that i thought maybe it has some significance 🤷‍♀️ Thanks for another thoughtful and entertaining reaction!

Hi Jim, you probably know by now but i think in case you don't, that knowing that Begin Again its the end of standard original album. I think the fact that the whole album it's an expression of screaming about love, and how she almost lost faith in love, but in the end she understands that she can love again it's what makes that song a really healing safe spot, and not only in the love aspect but just the grieving.

Ha. Even as a swiftie I try to forget about that moment in time haha. It was awkward. We can all admit that was an awkward moment for all of us. She was 22 and he was 17. It's ok to level a wtf at her when wtf is warranted. But upon reflection... I feel like maybe the errrr regression was maybe like a feeling of them being safe. 17 year old boys are usually not great at masking their actual feelings. So maybe after the issues she had with older men being total creeps, he felt like a non harmful option?

Most of the time (nearly always) "All Too Well" is considered the epitome of Taylor's songwriting. I kind of agreed before the 10 minutes version was released and I kind of agree now, because honestly, she has MANY extremely well written songs. And it's obvious that is one of the ultimate breakup songs ever. But: You said it yourself, "Sad Beautiful Tragic" IS poetry. And a breakup song that shatters me every single time I listen to it. The only other songs with that power is Trembling Blue Stars' "Sometimes I Still Feel the Bruise."

Come Back Be Here I believe is about Harry Styles, and then we go on to 1989 which is almost entirely about him.

Girl At Home (Taylors Version) is so upsetting to me. I loved the original production. I dont know why she changed it so much 😭

About Starlight: TS saw a picture of the late Senator Bobby Kennedy and his wife (then girlfriend ) Ethel Kennedy at a school dance and she was inspired by it and wrote the song. When Rory Kennedy found out, she invited TS to meet her and her mother Ethel.

Starlight is rumoured to be about Bobby and Ethel Kennedy. Taylor found a photo of the pair dancing. She briefly dated a Kennedy around this time. They had 11 children in total.
