I want to thank you, Rick. I've been watching your channel for about a year and a half now. I still have a long way to go but I've noticed my game getting better and today I finally had the confidence to do a full 18 holes. I always took so many strokes over 9 holes that 18 was too intimidating. On top of that, I also managed to get my first ever Birdie on a par 5 and came really close on a couple of the par 3s. Like I said I still have a long way to go but thanks to you I've been able to develop the tools to get better!

I went to the test center to try out putters. This putter was way out of my budget, but it caught my eye because of the looks. I tried it out and I had the exact same initial experience as rick, I holed pretty much every single one I tried! I tested out other mallet putters, and they didn't feel the same at all. At that point I didn't know why because I hadn't heard about the FCG concept. I ended up buying it and I am so incredibly happy I did. Ive never felt more confident on the greens!

When Taylormade brought out the Spider series a couple of years ago with the "S" hosel, it was supposed to bring in those that want a toe-hang mallet. Being one that benefits from said style putter, I demo it. Thought it was a nice concept but for me, the weighting of that style just felt weird and unbalanced. Seemed to me that the toe side of that putter wanted to lay open all the time. Maybe this iteration cures that negative feeling for me. Can't wait to give it a try. Thanks Rick!

It's aimed at making TM some money Rick! I love how everyone want to make golf fun for everyone, but prices just keep going up and up for no real reason. Why has everything in golf gone up like 200% in the last 5 years? ... can't even get a basic shirt for less than 80$ (CAD) now. I remember buying my clicgear 3.5 push cart for around 150$... now it cost 280$ for the same model!
@fishblade2
@fishblade2 4 жыл бұрын
COMPLETELY agree!!! I am tired of people arguing research to explain huge mark ups that’s just keep going up and up. It is seriously making golf once again for more elite and unfortunately there are plenty of golfers continuously changing their equipment thinking it’s going to make that amazing difference thus fueling the price increase because people are willing to keep paying more and more thinking it’s better.. honestly blades haven’t even changed much in the years and people act like the technology has advances something incredible. It’s almost hypocritical because companies are trying to make club lines that fit every type of golfer but increasing the price to where the average high handicapper can’t even buy a new club with new technology without sacrificing their car and house payment for a month...

Joey Kovacs Good info. I’ll have to go test out a few. I was a Belly putter guy until they were banned. Now I have the TFI CB 8.0 in 40 inches, but my distance putting has been awful. I moved it to a mini arm lock and the touch his there, but it’s a toe hang putter so I often pull short putts. I need a nice face balanced model with a wrist lock grip I think. Was debating between the new Soft Premier or the Frontline.

@@phynamite9 No worries, and yeah they come in 35" as standard so you may wanna look at different shaft options to suit your desired address posture. Sure your local pro can help with that, but definitely give them a go if you can its only slightly toe balanced so it might keep you on path a little better vs' full toe hang

I'm a straight through putter and was fit for the Frontline Elevado 32" 2 up lie. I have tried all Odyssey, Ping, Cleveland & Taylormade except this new one. Even tried Tour Edge, See More. This Frontline Elevado just works and I love it and was much cheaper than many other putters.

Looks like TM having taken the forward CG idea from the Cleveland Frontline and mashed it with the white/black alignment markings of the Odyssey Versa range doubled the price and come up with their Spider FCG Putters, clever! PS the nearer the centre of mass is to the front of the Putter the better the feel, the weights positioned either side of the hitting zone will improve the MOI of the Putter and it's reaction to off-centre strikes.

The TaylorMade Spider putter’s “forgiveness” hasn’t helped Rory McIlroy become a top notch putter! I’m a Ping Anser guy myself, Karsten Solheim was the best putter designer of all time. Scotty Cameron has taken all of Solheim’s Ping putter designs and made his putters from them. The Newport and Newport 2 wouldn’t exist if not for the Anser!

Rick, 2 things I noticed.. 1) mallets tend to be more face balanced, blades more toe hang. You didn't check that on this putter. That would be a huge indicator of what TM is trying to do with this design. 2) you spent more time lining up your golf balls then I have ever seen in your previous putter reviews. You need to be consistent when testing/reviewing putters. Either line them all up for all putter reviews, or don't line any up at all. Obviously lining up the ball helps make more putts... Thanks for all the great content!

I think most of the time it's not the putter tech or whatever per say but it's the confidence the putter gives you and joy the putters puts into your head. If it looks good, feels good, sounds good then I'll prob hit it better. My current putter of 5 years I've just lost love in it. It's nothing fancy but you bet when I picked up a new SC Flowback 5 I felt I could drain 30' puts all day even though I still prob wont. My old putter was toe heavy and this FLowback 5 is face balance and I think that make for me a HUGE difference in feel and stroke. Having the right tools for the job usually makes the job easier or more enjoyable.

The benefit has to be the roll. My biggest knock with the spider or any rear-weighted putter is the tendency to spin. Think...when you move weight back in a driver, it raises launch and spin. Not exactly what you want in a putter. I bet this rolls much better

Some golfers don't like feeling the weight way back further away from the face affecting their touch and stroke pattern as well as the release. Say if you're a person that releases face during the stroke and if the weight is so far back in the head is going to fight against your stroke and how you release the face which will affect the release pattern as well as the touch. Basically a deep CG putter like a normal spider s super stable but it's not always going to work well with a stroke that opens and releases the face as a deep CG prevents from that happening. That is why some people needs the CG forward but at the same time not all golfers strike the putt out of the middle so they need stability or the MOI along with that forward CG which the TRUSS can cater for. However the blade or a smaller mallet head is limited with how big the alignment aid can be with the head size and shape while most golfers struggle with alignment. So the FCG is basically for people that has a stroke and release pattern that better suits a blade CG location but also struggles with off centre strikes and alignment. By the way putters like the mallet TRUSS and something fang shaped like the Odyssey #7s typically has a relatively forward CG location compared to something like a SPIDER x but still has a higher MOI that typical blades helping off-centre strikes hence the reason why some players that grew up with blades recently use that kind of head shape.

It feels like a mental boost. Giving a golfer the confidence of hitting putts with a putter that looks like a mallet, but performs like a blade. You should do a blind fold test with an average golfer where they’re given three putters to test. The first test would be on feel alone, see if they can spot feel which is which. Then have them putt without the blind fold to see if the appearance of having a mallet instills the same confidence as having an actual mallet putter... I think I explained it right...but you get what I’m trying to say

Agreed. I recently changed to a Frontline Cero Mallet, and it has transformed my putting game. I am leaving far fewer putts short, and holing more long ones. From 4 feet, it is almost more difficult to miss than to hole it. Typical TM in my opinion. Use someone else's innovation, claim it as their own, and charge twice as much for it. The only TaylorMade clubs left in my bag are the M2 fairways, and they are on their way out as well.

I know this video is old, I know the model isn’t brand new, but I recently was poking around a Golf Galaxy store and tested this out on the putting green and I kind of loved it. I use a blade right now and this has me thinking.

I’m a mallet guy and would buy it because I’m a fan of the insert and I like a nice alignment aid on my putters. Not so much worried about the forgiveness. Can’t wait to get one. Great review sir !!!

This reminds me of the Scotty Cameron Detour putter. Older blade putter that is T-shaped for a longer alignment line but the line is slightly curved to account for the swing shape.

The Big T is back... I just put a new face in my No5 (stupid metal x face). I just couldn’t let it go as there was nothing else like it for alignment... but now there is again.

Cleveland had the same idea with their putter line called Frontline. However, the TM one looks like it has better build quality!

I would say the opposite. I play a Cleveland Frontline Elevado and that Taylormade looks cheap to me whereas the Cleveland lineup looks and feels great.

00:37 I think they are trying to say that you get the confidence of a big putter head (aka a mallet), but the fantastic pure feel of a blade putter. So for golfers who like a bigger head but don’t like the feel of a mallet they can get that.
@jacobmccain8082

Also Rick the theory is that there are a lot of people with a more gated stroke that don’t play mallets because you can’t make a spider with even moderate toe hang. This allows more forgiveness than a pure blade but with the ability to give it more toe flow. Not sure it’s a big enough market to make it popular but the concept is sound.

Oh, I just bought one at a thrift store, with a 917 driver, 915 driver, vokey 56, vokey 60, and a brand new bag. $30 US. Got an F9 3 wood on trade for some of them. Kept the 915 driver, it bombs. The putter, I got $50 for.

Just picked this up and then watched your review lol. I was going from a blade and was interested in getting a mallet. As far as mallets go this one looked the nicest when standing over the ball. It also felt the best for me, but that makes sense after watching your video why I would gravitate towards it.

I have always used a blade putter, ( Scotty Cameron ), And I have never putted from off the green. As I have gotten older, I started practicing with a 3 wood around the green instead of using a wedge, And I have to say the results are intriguing, It has also got me thinking that maybe, A mallet-style putter would be the way to go?

The problem with Taylormade putters is the finish and the paintwork. I had one and after 2 months the putter looked like it was 10 years old. The paint was peeling off. And the scratches on the bottom were really visible. That annoyed me. I've been playing a Scotty for 2 years now and it still looks like new. A huge difference in quality and manufacturing.

I've been using the Taylormade Mullen 2 putter for about a year now. This seems like it would be a natural next step putter-wise for me. Only thing holding me back is the price point... That's a price for sure.

I don’t know what it is, but I just can’t look at a big square putter and not think about how it doesn’t look good. I may putt better with it, but I love the putter I have because it is a simple blade. I’ve tried mallet putters before but they’re just so big and I like the feel and look of a thin putter. Also, making it easy to hit the ball harder loses the feel of putting. I like that my putter is so light and I have that feel of hitting the ball and I know the sound when I hit it right.

I like it. I've used a mallet for years, and have often thought of trying a more bladed putter. This might have been the thing to try if it wasn't for the fact its going to be £300.

In a way, it reminds me of my Odyssey Rossie Putter (Ref Ryan Palmer's putter). The Odyssey is smaller and the "carved" out area in the back section is on top instead of on bottom. The odyssey also doesn't have all the weights which I am guessing is part of the reason for the lower price.

I think that this is not as confusing as you think! I like a blade putter but like the line on the mallet for lining up which is exactly what this putter is even though from the top it looks like a mallet its a blade with a line. Because like you said when you flip it over there just added a bit for the line there is not much there which I think I might try!!
