This video, thanks to you, Taylor, inspired me to hike Mount Washington. I'm 69 and was hesitant to attempt it. But I hiked 12 mountains, each one bigger and longer than the last. Plus exercise. Then the day after Labor Day, 2023, it came true. I'll never forget it. Great videos. I appreciate the hard work that goes into them, being a retired videographer. Hike on, be safe.

My first hike ever was Mt Washington via Tuckerman in 2008. It was brutal for a first hike but got me hooked, and that was the start of my NH48 adventure. Many thanks from Quebec,

We are thinking of doing it this summer. Is Tuckerman harder than Ammonoosuc? What makes people choose one trail over the other? Thanks.
@slythenavigator1131
@slythenavigator1131 2 жыл бұрын
@@donnajean72 I found Tuckerman way harder, but Amonoosuc is a bit longer. Thence the choice between grade and distance. Both are very scenic and awesome.

Other than it being an absolute circus up there, yeah it's pretty surreal standing at the highest point in New England, and being able to look and see for hundreds of miles on a clear day.

Hike and climb while you can young lady. At 71 my knees won't allow that anymore. Starting in the early 70's I climbed Mt. Washington 17 times plus 3 other times that we prudently turned back due to inclement weather. The Franconian Ridge and the Pemigewassett Wilderness are two other favorite hikes in the Whites. Stay safe, peace.

My first and only hike up to the summit of Mt. Washington was in 1980 when I was 17 years old. I was completely unprepared. I had never hiked any mountain before. I believe it was spring. There were millions of biting black flies swarming and biting us constantly. We left at the crack of dawn, the guy I was with almost fell down an ice field and would have died had he not held on. The hiking boots I had didn't fit properly so with every step I took on the way down, my toes were slamming into the front of my boots. That night and for the next several days, I couldn't walk. My big toe nails turned black and eventually fell off a few weeks later. I had problems with them for years and eventually had to have surgery on them in 1993. I can't believe I was actually able to climb such a huge mountain. If I recall, it took us about 8-10 hours to get up and down. Thank you for sharing your video. It brought back a lot of memories for me.

Hi Taylor. I was so psyched to see this one. I did that exact trail when I was up there visiting my cousins about a month ago. It was clear at first, but was semi wet and the clouds moved in and I never got to see the view that you had from on top. Thank you so much for that. I was remembering all the landmarks that you were showing. So, love your videos. I can not wait for your next one. I am learning a lot . I am backpacking West Virginia this week. I am going to hit as many peaks in the Whites starting in April. I can't wait for my merchandise to come in. Probably today. I will be wearing them on my trip. Plan on getting more. You rock:)

Thanks for the trip down memory lane! In 1975 On Memorial Day a friend and I hiked up and skiied Tuckermans, most of the trail up was snow covered and skiing was great. We also skied down as far as we could then bushwacked back to the car. Weather was perfect and beer was cold. About a month later we biked up the road until clouds got so thick we couldn't see anything. No guardrails, just big rocks about 10 feet apart. Decided to turn around and head down. The constant braking heated the rims up enough to melt the sew-up glue and our tires started to roll of the rims. Kind of a hairy descent but again the beer was cold at the bottom. This Maineiac loves your posts, ayuh!

Took a 4 1/2 hr car ride from NYC to Hanover NH (for a few days). Nice little town. Hike the AT for 10 miles from Hanover (5 miles out, 5 miles back to Hanover). The forest/trail was dark and dense and it was a perfectly sunny day. I like New Hampshire/Vermont ... cute little towns.

You had a beautiful day , I was taking to someone recently about my trip took the sane way you did , it started out beautiful and then up by where the alpine started it started downpouring and winds kicked up to 80+ got to the hut and we decided it might be more dangerous to turn back some we pushed to the summit and made it and were lucky enough to take a train down .

Agreed that your videos and your editing continue to get better and better. Well done! You mentioned it was a "zoo" up there. I would urge you to use your platform to remind folks to consider purchasing a NH Hike Safe card. Fish and Game is always stretched thin but especially this year with Covid and with so many new hikers out there - many of whom are not as prepared as they could be. Thanks and be safe out there.

I thruhiked in 98 (age 55) and stayed in 3 of the huts between Crawdord Notch and Pinkham notch. I noticed most of the people who stayed in the huts were overnight hikers and make reservations weeks or months ahead. Back then the hut system would make room for a few thruhikers (work for stay) each night ; I'm not sure about now. Work was minimal. The huts were too expensive(about $70 US including 2 great meals and a bunk) for many thruhikers, especially college kids). I was older with disposable income so I was fortunate. Many young thruhikers thought the huts should be free. Staying in the huts was a great experience, food was awesome and the college aged staff who work there had a lot of good stories about competition between the huts. There are several interesting books on tragedies on the mountain (over 200 deaths). The rescue teams have my highest respect.

Looks like if I time it right, I could fit in a "good" weather visit to Mt. Washington before close of the season. I keep seeing discouraging updates from the observatory about snow and low temps. When I last went in 2017 to watch the hillclimb race, that was the middle of July. Even then the temps got cold and a bit rainy. So I keep thinking doing a drive to the summit now would be hit or miss. But this video makes me think maybe not!

WOW you had perfect weather for that! If I had to live somewhere close to hiking it would be NH! But I can't move that far away from my 7 grandkids...When I left for the AT I only had two, it would be difficult leaving all of them, but I would love to do some hiking "up north" before I get too old, lol.

The parking lot looks as crowded as the lots in the National Forest that I hike! Especially now everyone wants to get out for day hikes!!!

I don't even think that was the main parking lot. The lot at the end of the street is much larger and that was probably full too

Well done, Taylor. I have to say, having never seen any video of the Mt. Washington summit, the fact that there is an f'n train on the top makes me not care in the least if I'm ever there. Really a shame that such a grand peak has become a parking lot and a train station. Your path was honorable. Good job!

Wow, I remember the days when I could just spool out a quick hike of the tallest mountain in New England in six hours. No. No I don't, because there never were any days like that. Who am I kidding?

Thanks for sharing the hike with us. It looked like more people hiking up the trail with you than down. Do some hikers take the cog down instead of hiking it down?

People who cross weave their steps usually twist their ankles, or stumble more often. It's advisable to train yourself to keep your feet beneath your shoulders. It's that way with skiing too, unless you're Vadelling. Austrian technique of feet beneath the shoulders gives you much more control in the steep runs.

Not true on all trails. The same day as Taylor was doing this hike, I was on the Cohos Trail and saw 1 person. Sunday, I went to Washington, and yes, on Tuckerman's Ravine Trail, it was crowded, but on Boott Spur I saw 4 people in 4 hours. You can plan your hikes to avoid crowds.

Mt. Washington is definitely on my list! Thanks for sharing the adventure with us. I love watching your hiking vids while I'm stuck inside due to a knee surgery. Working hard at physical therapy and watching your videos keep me going! I got a Hike planned in 26 days, gonna make it happen. Stay positive!

I totally get the filming with other are around thing. I can blab on and on and on to a camera when I'm by myself. However, I feel like a total idiot when there are other people nearby, and therefore I don't really ever record that way. I just looked this route up (more or less) and it said that there was roughly a 4,300' elevation gain to get to the top of Mt. Washington. There are several Colorado fourteeners which have less than 3,000' from the normal trailhead to the summit........and the trails going up many of these are much, much tamer than the steep, rocky terrain that you have in the Whites. Yes, a lot of folks out west simply look at a mountain's elevation and then make a lot of assumptions about "real" of a mountain it is. Next week I'm going to Colorado to do my 46 Climbs challenge by hiking up 5 fourteeners in 24 hours (I hope). However, on a few of them, I'm seriously considering adding extra elevation gain (and also mileage) onto the start of the hikes just so that I can gain at least 3,000' on the ascent. That's what some folks who are serious about lists and records consider a complete ascent.

Thanks for the beautiful video. When you were pointing out the mountains when you got to the top you said monadnock but I couldn’t figure out which one it was. I live in the monadnock area & I see this beautiful mountain daily & know it’s distinctive outline but none of the mountains in the distance looked like it. If there’s a way to point it out to me I’d appreciate it. I sadly have never made it up to mt. Washington so I was absorbing all the beauty you showed. Thanks

I was having a hard time figuring out what peak was monadnock. I watched it back a couple times and I think the one tall peak in the distance might be kearsarge, and monadnock is to the left of it more in the clouds. I think I saw it in real life, but maybe it didn't come out that well on camera.
Magic trick 🪄😁
