Tayo, this video is probably one of the best piece of content about New York and America. I don't want to criticize other popular African travel content creators but everything in this video was super balanced, honest, very intelligent and way above others usually do. I particularly loved all the characters you interviewed and send them my prayers: the Nigerian food business guy, the two young beautiful ladies ("find your tribe" what a smart piece of advice) and the lady in the street from Trinidad. Félicitations Tayo, tu es le meilleur.

You've come a really long way from the first video of you stuck in a Joburg apartment at the start of the pandemic, which was my introduction to your film brilliance. Most KZfaqrs just go around filming a bunch of random stuff, but you do it so purposefully and attentively that everything just falls into place, as it should. I appreciate the time you put into planning, cutting and putting these videos together behind the scenes. One love from Southy!

As an American it always amazes me how nice people are in other countries. Your right people in America don’t care about you. Your value is how much money you can bring in. I’ll never forget being in Bali, Indonesia after 3 days and I realized they had no homelessness. I was shocked. It’s the moment I realized how bad my country really is and how much we could afford to take care of our people if we really wanted to.

I’m a born & raised NYer & i enjoyed your take on NYC. It’s not for everyone. The term “only the strong survive” fits this place and i think that’s part of what makes this place so unique & so great. This place is very flawed but it’s flaws are part of the uniqueness of NYC. I’ve lived outside of NYC for a moment in the military and have visited many cities in America and around the world. Great places but none can compare to New York City. One of the ladies said it best, this is a place where you need a break from it but for me, once that break is over, I’m ready to deal with it again. It’s only Dog Eat Dog if you let it be. NYC Rocks & I’m proud to be a New Yorker.

One thing you can always say about Nigerians - enterprising. They are the blueprint tin terms of entrepneurship for all of us Africans. Zimbabwean and proud to say it and give credit to my Nigerian brothers and sisters.

I am a NYC native. Born and raised in BK. Everything you stated is true. As far as the cleanliness, the subways, the noise, the fast paced life and lack of courtesy as well as homelessness and drugs etc. A lot of things were magnified due to the pandemic and it’s even worse now. There were already existing issues but seems like things have become 10 times worse. We as NYers don’t understand why our streets aren’t cleaner. Why our transit system is trash etc. However, change really begins with the individual. Also, yes, there are those who just don’t care and contribute to the negative aspects but there are a lot that do. That are kind, compassionate and empathetic. ❤

Everything Tayo said in this video was correct. I flew to New York from Texas last month to renew my Nigerian passport at the Nigerian House and I can tell you for free that if they pay me $100,000 more than what I make here in Texas, I can never live in New York. In summary, New York is not for everybody. Good job Tayo!

I'm a native New Yorker. I love that you visited my home town. Even other Americans don't think NY gets hot. It's not small, I'm from the Bronx and had a boyfriend in BK, we were two hours apart. It's just that it's so crowded it may seem smaller. Also, don't judge the entire US, by NY. It's pretty unique. There are places that are cleaner, cheaper and people don't step over the homeless. I had to learn to be kinder when I left. I left twice, because as much as I love it, my money goes MUCH farther down south. But I'm glad I'm from there. I wouldn't want to have grown up anywhere else.

Thank you for NOT sugar coating things. Thank you for seeing the reality. Africa is freer than they believe. The beautiful thing I see about Africa is their room to improve on things that makes lives better. Bless Africa I cannot wait to visit.

As a result you don’t feel isolated and need to conform in the diaspora, obviously not everyone is like that, but it’s a common trend. This is so real. I was in NY for 1.5 years for work and you really captued how important it is to know who you are and finding your tribe because the city can be isolating. During my time, I found it hard to have a solid west african community in brooklyn which was a change since I am so used to being around the african community in the dmv. I left relatively early because I couldnt stomach the lack of community. It can be chanllenging. Like the brother said it takes time 5year, 10 years etc. It is possible but definelty not for everyone.

I woke up 4.30am, my goddess asleep, put a nespresso, rolled a cigarette, and after a few homestead videos, this guy appeared saying something about passports. Watched that one, really honest one, liked and subscribed in a split second. This is the second I watched. Although in northern Europe, first time I felt so close to Nigeria. Loved all people interviewed and I deeply appreciate the beauty of people like Tayo creating a hope in a world who is getting uglier every day. From all the places in the Universe where I would looking for a precise and sound description of being New Yorker and how is the inner soul of its Metropolis, boy, this was the least expected but it had the most acute, down-to-earth and even poetic definition of WHAT is New York. And all of it came from the lips of some folks from the streets and a bunch of people from the African diaspora. If I would read that in the NY Times I wouldn't believe that. Tayo, just be aware that you're Awesome!

I'm from New York City, a mostly Black, middle income town called Saint Albans in the borough of Queens. I like this presentation overall, you're fair. I'm glad you didn't spend too much time in Times Square as that's basically a tourist spot and it's OK, but it's a tourist spot. The bigger part of Times Square is the Broadway theatre district beyond just the "square" area. NYC, you can "make it" but it kind of depends on the type of discipline you want to make it in. If you're some sort of abstract musician, you may have to teach and you won't make the salary just by music alone to bring in enough people to full venues. And there's always the issue of healthcare in the USA though that has improved with the passing of the ACA. Still, it's not perfect. The one area you seemed to miss was Jackson Heights. You get there via a subway, 7 to 74th St. or E or F to Roosevelt Avenue, Jackson Heights. Here's the greatest thing about NYC: ethnic diversity. This is by far the most ethnically diverse part of New York City yet many tourists seem to miss this area. If you come to NYC and have any interest in the ethnic diversity here, don't miss Jackson Heights, Queens, NYC. About the subways, the stations are hot and sometimes smelly. All of the subway cars are air-conditioned but it may not work in every subway car from time to time. Most of the subways aren't that old either, only a few are on some lines and they're being replaced slowly. The subway is crucial to NYC. I no longer live in NYC due to the ridiculous rent and that I want to see more of nature. I live 30 minutes away in a town in New Jersey and visit NYC every week. I agree with the young woman that talked about tribes. But my tribe isn't an ethnic group but more of a group of people that share similar musical tastes or entertainment choices. I am part Caribbean in family, Bajan (Barbadian), so I do enjoy getting with the Caribbean community from time to time. Funny thing is I don't find NYC fast paced. I see a lot of people sitting around drinking coffee then it is on to whatever they are doing. What I'm finding is people in their own group not necessarily connecting with the outer atmosphere like they do in other places. There is hustle, but there's hanging out and around too. Thanks for this video and great job of it.

I moved to NYC in 2003. I was fortunate to have family already there who I could draw support from, unlike the experience of the lady speaking on the street corner. NYC is tough, I mean really tough and I learnt some harsh lessons along the way. The city is not for everyone, a lot of people I met in my early years in the city eventually moved away. And many of them didn’t move because they hated the city, they had to move for basically survival. It’s getting increasingly expensive. If you can survive in NYC, you can survive and be successful anyway else. And so many chose to stay or use it as a launching pad to go somewhere else in life.

This is a very honest review, Tayo. The only caution I would add here is that NYC is not America. It would surprise you to know that America is more rural than urban as a whole.

New York is expensive but there is a magic feeling that you get living here that you don't feel in any other city! You feel it even as a visitor!

Hahaha 3mins and you're 10000% spot on. I lived there for 14 yrs and while what you showed was true , it's honestly not the complete story of NYC, you didn't really see the real real NYC. There are people who live a different reality from what you experienced - and I mean good reality. The city works for some but not for everyone. It wasn't for me but I respect NYC. It taught me a lot.

I enjoyed this vlog very much. As a Kenyan living in London, I’ve been to New York twice and I found it to be a land of contrast with very rich people and very many homeless people at the same time. As for quality of life, I think that London is much better.

I live in NYC, I love the fast paced culture. Also what’s beautiful is that you will never get bored because there’s always something to do. However once you get into a routine the city has its negatives. Not everyone is partying every weekend and enjoying life also the hustle and bustle of the city does get old. There are other cities that are far more laid back yet still exciting and you can live a better lifestyle for a cheaper cost. Also with the tip thing, that guy was rude, you are never obligated to leave a tip if you are getting your food to-go. I usually only tip if I’m eating inside at a restaurant or getting food delivered.

Hmm! This video has really changed my perspective about some things. Normally when people living down here in Nigeria consider relocating abroad, we imagine only the good side and think everything is rosy abroad, maybe its because of how they paint their country to be to the outside world. I think everyone planning to relocate to any foreign country should do a thorough research on the good and the bad side of that country so as to be mentally prepared and also be able to make sustainable plans on how to survive . Most people leave Nigeria to abroad with a wrong perspective. They just think once u land America, boom u get a job and the rest is history. About the dirts littered on the streets 🙁 seriously I used to think it’s in Nigeria alone one can find such. Thank you so much for this unbiased review of America and also please consider making a video for Canada because a lot of Nigerians are interested in relocating to that country including I myself.

You found a down to earth tribe very quickly. I feel that you being creative and sharing your perspective on being in New York City is very valuable to even the people who live there. Went to NY for the first time August ‘23 … and like he said..NOBODY CARED!!!! Everyone was in their own zone… but I more so liked that I could be in my zone and no one seemed to give two f*cks about what I was doing.. Every one was so casually dressed with comfort seeming to trump appearance. I would love to live there ❤..Oh.. I also liked how accessible everything was via public transportation.. An American living in Africa and was really curious about how you were going to tell this story. Great job! What I can't understand though is how in the hell you thought that NYC was CLEAN? It feels like there is an endless amount of negative media on the USA and some people refuse to consume it. Also nothing in the US is like NYC. It's not an accurate representation of the US. I think most Americans haven't even been there. So I'd suggest touring other parts of the US when you can. Blessings.

Thank you for this inside look of my hometown from a new comer's point of view. I have lived here all of my life and I have been to many other places that have their perks but I can say there's nothing like this place. What I love is the intellectual exchange and that most people are creatively building their lives here. In that effort there is a deep respect for each other's way of expression and style. Yes, in every sense New York is an artistic town. Native New Yorkers respect the innate artistry that it takes to find a way to live here. That's what makes this place so exciting. If you are a native, you know how to live quietly in the city and party joyfully when you want. The food is fresher and more varied than most places I go to outside the city. It's an athletic environment because you have to walk and climb stairs quite a bit. It keeps you healthier than folks who ride in cars for everything they do. I love the independence of movement. Public transport makes the city work. But mostly it's the people from all around the world , they are interested in me, and I am interested in them. It's like international travel in your hometown. Not going to live anywhere else. I will visit other places but Home is Home! Love NYC!

I find this video very interesting because I recently moved back to my country after about a year and a half of living in New York. I agreed with most of your takes about the culture and had almost identical observations when I first moved there. New York is amazing and I hope to be back one day when I have more tools to add to my resume that I don't currently have so i'll be able to make a comfortable living because heck living in America on your own without a "real" profession can be a nightmare. New York and America in general have a lot of problems. I personally found it at times to be SUPER alienating, especially as my experience was as a young immigrant, but at the same time , like Umazi and her friend said in the video (btw shoutout to them they explained some things beautifully) you can always find your tribe. New York really makes you feel small because you realize you are not special because there are so many people with the same exact interests as you, but that's not really a bad thing because you can make a lot of friends based on that fact. Eventually after I settled in I started to feel like the culture was TOO demanding, it's kind of crazy that even though New York is the most diverse city on earth, and there are all walks of life in there still New Yorkers are some of the most judgemental, exploitative and ungenuine people i've met. Not all of them or most of them, but a lot are just like that unfortunately. That was atleast my experience that I wanted to share. Thank you so much for this video Tayo!

The city that never sleeps. I visited few years ago. My wife didn’t like New York but for me it wasn’t that bad for a visit but to live not for me. True, my wife wondered how emergency ambulance are able to find their way in the middle of busy roads. I must saw I love Time Square despite the busyness. The quality of this video, the storytelling, the everything is top notch! One, on seeing the title and thumbnail would think this is just another vlog of New York City but little do they know they are in for a surprise.
