My first solo in a TBM 900. Sorry for the audio at the beginning, hopefully I will get better at this over time. The occasional rattles are from the camera shaking in the mount. The music at the end is just whatever was playing on SXM radio.

Great job, thanks for the ride and congratulations on your first solo. BTW, I'm not a pilot, just a frequent flyer, but I noticed another airplane that is similar in appearance and that is the Pilatus. I'm sure there are many differences, care to advise on that?
@JasonFlies
@JasonFlies 7 жыл бұрын
Pilatus PC12 is significantly bigger, but a bit slower. It also has a lavatory (really a glorified bucket, but still handy) and can carry more people/stuff. I love that plane too! :)
@par5eagles975
@par5eagles975 6 жыл бұрын
John, the most obvious similarities- the same PT6 engine, and both are single pilot. Differences: The pliatus pc-12 is bigger, significantly slower - 50 MPH, has a lower service ceiling, and is less efficient fuel-wise. On the flip side, the Pilatus has a higher useful load and more seats, and arguably a better safety record than the TBM series. As flying magazine says, TBM is the ferrari, Pilatus pc-12 is the range rover. Both super-desirable! I'd take either, though the TBM is sexier...

Great video Jason! Quick question. At about how many hours did you feel comfortable flying the TBM solo? I am a Commercial/Multi/Instrument pilot but have pretty much stuck with and loved our Bonanza but have been craving more speed lately since we live in North Carolina but have family in Ohio and make frequent 300+nm xc's. How was the transition from what you flew before the TBM? Thanks for sharing the great vids!
@JasonFlies
@JasonFlies 7 жыл бұрын
At around 20-25 hours I was feeling pretty comfortable. I had 500 hours with the G1000 already (1000 overall) so that helped I believe. The transition was fun, and I enjoyed the week long class at SimCom. We too have longer trips so wanted a faster plane with longer legs that could go over most of the weather.

Why did I chose that plane? Was a good fit for the missions I fly - 4 or less people on trips around 600-800nm typically. It's fast but with a relatively low operating cost, and I wanted a turbine for smoothness, power, and reliability but one that would go into fairly short runways nicely.

@JasonFlies
@JasonFlies 7 жыл бұрын

Hi, Jason. So, how many hours did you have prior to getting your TBM? I read somewhere that TBM requires that you have at least 500 hours of flying before being able to get a TBM. How far is that true?
@TIO540S1
@TIO540S1 4 жыл бұрын
Jason TBM No type rating for a turboprop so long as its max gross weight doesn’t exceed 12,500 pounds (which the TBM does not). On another note, I did my initial training for my Conquest II at SimCom. I’ll just say I’ll go elsewhere for my recurrent training.

Jason, Seeing so many positive comments makes me hesitant to say anything less but.........I notice you are not afraid of high tech (you even use I-pad for check lists) but I am! I would want at least a couple of steam gauges for back up rather than a total "glass cockpit" like you have. It's making me look seriously at a tbm850 instead of 900 ! I also prefer the 850's engine control quadrant! Your nervousness is obvious in your voice and shaking hands (see fuel filter inspection hatch door closing). I would like to see many more hours of solo before you take wife and kids with you. Already too late for that but.......
@JasonFlies
@JasonFlies 7 жыл бұрын
On the glass cockpit: the only failures I have had in my flying since 1993 have been steam gages, so (knock on wood) I believe the solid state stuff to be better. This plane has 4 independent AHRS (if I count my Stratus), 2 power generation systems, and 3 independent batteries backing those up. That's a level of redundancy I have never had before. Plus having no vacuum system driving them is a good thing. Nervousness: huh, I have always been a little shaky so that is just part of normal-me. The fuel filter door thing was an exception: I cut out the part where I was fighting that door for 2 minutes trying to get it to latch, while filming and pushing from an odd angle. I have since learned the trick to getting it to latch without so much fighting. :) I wasn't flying that day anyway, so had no reason to be nervous. I was certainly keyed up for my first solo, wanted to make sure I did a good job. That was after 25 hours of sim time and 25 hours of mentor time, so I was well prepared and feeling totally ready, but there's nothing like doing it for real by yourself! Everyone should judge that for themselves obviously, and anyone that favors extra instructor time gets a thumbs up in my book. I flew with 3 different instructors during my training which was also helpful - multiple perspectives on things. Also, having already had lots of time with the G1000 avionics in previous airplanes gave me a boost in the training, I could focus my education on the airplane and not the panel. I hear that adds a lot of training time if you are new to that equipment.
