• ① RC 1/4 SCALE 9 CYLIN...
ian redshaw flew the avro 504 in the video ,the builder and owner andy johnston kindly gave me these details -
Engine details:
¼ scale
9 cylinder four stroke
33mm bore, cast iron liners of 1mm wall thickness and aluminium finned barrels

Super unleaded petrol with belts'n'braces 50:1 oil mix. (I use Bel-Ray HR1 fully synthetic ester 2-stroke racing oil.)
Total loss force fed oil system via engine driven oil pump, approx. 30cc per 10 min flight using Bel-Ray
Rpm range 700-3500
Prop. is 27 ½" diameter x approx. 23" pitch, period scale blade shape made by EAT propellers, sadly now no longer since the death of Eric Thomas.
Weight 7kg
Avro 504K details:
¼ scale David Boddington/Nexus plans scaled up to 27% (to give sufficient cowl clearance for engine)

All up weight 23kg
Futaba 12FG TX 2.4Gig
Futaba R-6014 HS RX x 2
SM Services Opto Isolators x 2
Ignition and RX batteries 2000mAhr Eneloop
Power to servos 3,300 NmH subC via opto isolators
Servos are a mix of Hitec metal geared and Futaba, all non-digital
16 ferrite rings to combat the interference from the unshielded vintage ignition system
The Avro was designed around the Bentley with the provision for exchanging it for a Zenoah 62. The Avro's maiden flight was on 31st March 2012 with the 62 (and 3kg lead up front, the difference in weight between it and the Bentley) to prove the airframe and it was a great success so a further six flights were made to complete the CAA tests on that day before making the swap and further tests.
The Bentley engine build started in August 2004, it's test run was 9th January 2008 and the maiden flight in the Avro was 6th April 2012.
There are no noticeable effects of gyroscopic precession from the rotating Bentley affecting the handling unduly, just a slight difference in left and right which may be due to torque and the coarse-pitch propeller. Twenty-two flights with Bentley to date (23/07/2013).
Regards
Andy Johnston

All other planes on the field should be shut down when a model of this caliber is flown so as not to disturb the music of the engine. A stunning masterpiece of a model and a great video. Thank you for posting.

Man, that's a boat load of flying wires and N struts. Must take half a day to put together and break down at the field. I can't imagine this is an every day flier. Absolutely stunning.

What an amazing model. The aircraft itself would be enough, but the sight & sound of the Bentley on full-song is a total jaw-dropper! Thanks for posting this great video.

Such a shame about the sound quality - I would have really loved to hear that beautiful engine clearly - shame about the wind roar, noisy jets, commentary - sorry, I'm being picky, but I love multi cylinder engines - that one looks a beauty. Have I seen it the Model Engineering Exhibitions?

G'day, GLORIOUS ! Thanks for the tip... I was once planning an Ultralight Avro 504-k, with Lead Weights on the Propeller's Reduction-Driven Pulley - to duplicate the Gyroscopic Effects to get the handling correct. But, well, Anthropogenic Global Warming means that in a hundred years someone might be glad I didn't ever repair my 1992 crashed Biggles Fantasy - let alone build a better way to make Lawnmower-Noises in the Sky while looking down on my neighbours (!) ? As much fun as it would have been, olde Bean ; eh, what ? Such is life, Have a good one... Stay safe. ;-p Ciao !

hi runningwolfkenpo i think that because the avro 504 was essentially a training aircraft the skid was put there to stop the students from nosing over and damaging the propeller if they had any dodgey landings etc, im sure someone will put me right if im wrong - lol. regards pete,

I've always wondered why they designed WW I airplanes with systems where the whole motor rotated. The gyroscopic effect must have caused problems with handling.

It isn't as much of a chore as you think. As the wings have two sets of struts there is no need to completely de-rig every time and they are carried in pars in the back of my estate car. There are seven rigging wires which are permanently attached at one end and when the wing pairs are located it is just 15 mins to attach the other ends. I use 4mm stainless steel socket heat bolts. The fuselage is another matter. It is just over 8 feet long and is carried in my trailer or friends van Andy

fantastic video but any chance you can fit a shroud or filter over the microphone to remove wind noise? It overpowers the noise at times. great work though!

I know next to nothing nothing about this hobby but that did seem to be an incredibly short take off! Is that due to the light weight, the inherent design, or just the amount of power from that incredible-sounding engine?

I intend to remove the engine sometime and have it permanently mounted on a demonstration rig. I will re-fit the Zenoah 62 engine I used to carry out the airframe tests and proving flights. I just can't make up my mind when!!!! Andy
