I think the end should been longer and crazier. It's Ragnarok. The thing in the title. You just fights some normal goons and then fight Thor and Odin in their front yard and basement. Everything else that's cool is in the background or the cutscenes. Imagine jumping Thor with Jormungandr. Riding Fenrir or taking advantage of his portals. Maybe fighting Surtr with Freyr. A third phase with Odin. These are all obvious things to do so I know the devs thought about it.

I'd say it wasn't that Kratos was going to be worshiped. What touched him (and touched me as well) was that he had changed enough that he would be REVERED. That the people would not flee in terror at the stories of him but that he had done SOMETHING good. That was worth FAR more than being worshiped. He was finally a hero.

I have to say I disagree about the Athena thing. I feel like the whole "You will always be a monster" "Yes but I am your monster no longer" scene made for a perfect ending to Athena's manipulation and the greek saga. The way I saw it was that Kratos was finally able to let go and not be their pawn anymore. The greek saga had a slow escalation as Kratos keeps being held by his revenge/anger/PTSD, and he never considered that they have power over him because he allows them too. There are many points he could have (and maybe should have), turned away or stopped during the old GOW games, but he didn't. Athena showing up in GOW 5 would suggest that she has something over Kratos, and I think it makes more sense for him to be done with her permanently. He learned his lesson and moved on.

I thought the entire Ragnarok sequence at the end of the game was very anticlimactic. Jormungandr and Thor's battle gets hyped for two games and all we see is a 10 second shot of some flying dot in the sky making Jormungandr just disappear all of a sudden. Same with Surtr, he gets hyped a lot but all he does is just stab Odin's basement and disappear. Thor's fight was kinda disappointing too as he goes down really quickly and has barely any new moves from the intro fight and Odin's fight seems sorta lackluster as you mentioned in the vid. It feels like the devs were trying so hard to make a gigantic world to explore that they neglected the conclusion to the game or just didn't have time for it. I really wouldn't have minded having less to explore in Vanaheim, Svartalfheim and/or Ironwood if it meant the conclusion could have been more fleshed out and memorable.
@leithaziz2716
@leithaziz2716 Жыл бұрын
I also can't help but feel that Ragnarok itself ended up being more of a hurdle than anything. It didn't contribute much to the invasion of Asgard, we had Jormungandur, Fenrir, the Valkyries, and the Elfs do most of the work (at least that's how it felt for me with how the game presented the battle). It didn't do anything against Thor and Odin and only ended up killing Freyr. Freyr himself I felt his death was wasted. Besides how short it as and that we cut away from the aftermath of it, it also highlighted to me that Surtr's sacrifice brought more trouble than help. All of this has no impact on the actual ending of the game and the resolution of Atreus and Kratos' relationship (which is great), but for a climax: all you really do is pass through some corridors, fight basic enemies, open a large door and then fight Thor and Odin.

Surtr kinda felt like an afterthought, like he's only there because this is a game about Ragnarok so he has to be there. Not to mention how during the ending battle he is nothing but a detriment and by the end the characters don't seem like they want to destroy Asgard anymore. Kinda makes me feel bad for Surtr, he didn't want to be apart of this in the first place, they could have just left him alone and things would have mostly gone the same.

It felt more like a kids fight in your backyard rather than a war. Not to mention that Odin literally had no heavy hitters on the battlefield at that point. There was no second guessing. I like the flow of Atreus' combat, being a fan of DMC and fighting games in general, but for how long his sections end up his moveset doesn't expand as much as maybe it should have. In the first fight with thor, Thor saying things like "this feels familiar" and calling the kratos we know a "lesser version" of himself really made me think we were gonna deal with some time jumping stuff with a different twist than what we ended up getting with Tyr and im kind of dissapointed it didnt go that way. thor was such a hyped character, almost more than odin... so to have him and kratos hardly interact throughout the entire story is a such a letdown Another thing I would have loved to see but feel the setting forgot about is that there kind of isnt any consequences to killing a god. Baldur was the one whos death actually hurt the world since it started fimbulwinter. But we got no such thing for Heimdall, Odin, nor Thor. These arent lesser gods like Magni and Modi, these are big characters who have big responsibilities and they just die with no effect on the world. @@godzillazfriction In the codex Kratos says Thors' punches are "as hard as any I have felt". People misinterpret it, Kratos is saying Thor is as strong as the greek gods. With Mjolnir probably stronger. And according to Cory Barlog in 2018 Kratos used less than 30% of his power. And in Ragnarok prob less because he canonically doesn't use spartan rage against the norse gods. This proves he's definitely stronger he just holds massively back. And that Kratos needs to be nerfed for story reasons. It also proves what Cory barlog stated awhile back that Kratos can solo the entire norse pantheon if he didn't hold back.

I definitely agree with a lot of these points. Especially those criticizing Thor, Odin, and Birgir's sacrifice. I agree I wish Thor was a little more epic, especially since he ends up dying and it's very possible this is the last we'll see of him, I wish he had more time to develop and more scenes of badass-ery. Odin unfortunately didn't feel like a final boss. I was hoping for another spectacle and epic similar to the final fight with Zeus, I mean he's the Norse chieftain the one above all in his pantheon so I wish he had a better showing. Birgir's sacrifice also made no sense to me, the moment I saw it I knew exactly what they were going for and trying to achieve but it fell flat because we don't know this character we never met him outside of Ragnarok so while noble it failed in making us feel any emotion, you'll be hard pressed to find anyone who was sad when he jumped off that boat. All those criticisms honestly have one thing in common and it's that the Norse saga should've been 3 games. Think about it. It gives Thor an entire game to be the badass we wanted him to be similar to how Baldur had most of 2018 to himself, Odin could've had 2 games to develop, and Birgir could've become a more fleshed out character, or hell, given that sacrifice to someone else. In a perfect world, I feel like this game would've been titled God of War Fimbulwinter, and Ragnarok would've been the third and final game in the Norse saga. Don't get me wrong, the game honestly is great for what it is and it's impressive they still wrote a good story to wrap up the Norse saga in just 2 games but it definitely felt like the pacing was off at times, sometimes even feeling rushed and a third game would've easily solved that.

I must be in the minority here but I thought Kratos and Freya's reconciliation was done very well. It is established that Freya had been trying to kill Kratos throughout Fimbulwinter so her forgiveness actually took years. I also love how Kratos doesn't apologize for his actions, but he does apologize for his choice. Yup Thor felt like a broken man more than a monster, except in the 1st fight. Kratos was an absolute monster when he was younger, now he's sort of a monster that is waiting to explode, well with lots of control. Thor felt sort of like a savage beast and a broken one at that, I think we all expected a gow 3 Kratos 2.0 in Thors' character. Heimdall basically describes them in the game with a few words. He calls Thor a "sick man" and Kratos "monster".

In defense of the Odin fight, fighting was never his strongest trait. Unlike Zeus, Odin is a schemer and a planner, so of course he wouldn’t be as difficult to take down as Thor or Heimdall. Still, it DOES feel slightly underwhelming for a final boss in a God of War game. Actually getting to fight Surtr/Ragnarok afterwards would have been way more climactic.

Even though that's true Odin is still supposed to be a force to be reckoned with. He may not be a warrior but he has learned almost everything there is to know about magic. @@BlackangelKatakuri To be honest, Thor's death feels a little cheap because it was just a sudden surprise attack through the throat that feels fairly avoidable, but you're not wrong. I'm not saying Odin has NO battle experience; he does still wield Gungnir, as you said, and he killed the First Giant Ymir. I guess I'm just saying that even with his legendary spear and the myriad of magics at his disposal (which he certainly does make use of in the final battle), Odin ultimately doesn't have as much overall battle experience because he prefer to let others do the fighting for him.

too bad that he wasnt any good with scheming and planning. i just cant understand how people could praise this character. the only thing that he really does in this whole game is disguising as tyr (which has its own seperate problems logic wise) and even that doesnt get him anywhere. he neither gets a hold of the mask nor does he use any information he gained by learning about all their plans. even kratos admits that it feels too easy. i just dont see any bit of the „cunning mastermind“ that the stories all depicted. even his manipulation tactics of thor and his other family members is bad. there is nothing subtle or cleverly manipulative in how he acts on them. at the end he literally shouts „i think. you kill“ like you couldnt be more on the nose with how much of a plain evil guy you are. the only thing missing is a cringy clichee evil laugh.
@GoldLight73
@GoldLight73 Жыл бұрын
@@cihankuzhan8928 I'm going to have to disagree with you there. We see Odin's tact on full display throughout the entire game, with the exception of a few key moments. I mean, even with his first appearance, you can see Odin's manipulation skills on display. All he asks is that Atreus stops looking into Tyr, and nothing he says actually sounds like a bad deal: "Do this one thing and not only do I promise to leave you alone like you want, I'll even keep Freya from trying to hunt and kill you." If you read the journal entry afterward, Kratos even writes that he might have been tempted by the offer if he didn't trust Mimir's council so much. Then we have Atreus's entire first visit to Midgard, which Odin clearly had play out like a script; he dropped Atreus outside the wall so that Atreus would have to climb, ensuring he'd meet Heimdall. Odin could then swoop in and "save" Loki from his brash subordinate, before giving the kid a tour of Asgard clearly designed to make himself look like a chill, upstanding guy to work for. Even the Tyr deception, which you claim didn't work, does. He DID get the mask out of that, twice even, and would have gotten away with it if not for Kratos just having really impeccable aim. As for Thor and the rest of his family? Hate to tell you this, but Odin's methods aren't far from actual abuse tactics. He has literally broken down the thunder god's self-esteem to the point that even Thor doesn't think he's good for anything other than killing and drinking. Yes, it is blatantly scummy, but so are most relationships like that when viewed from the outside. All in all, I don't think you're giving the All-Father enough credit. It's easy to see through with the benefit of hindsight, but actually put yourself in the characters' shoes for a moment and you might be surprised how effective his tactics can really be.

@@GoldLight73 This is a late response but the main problem I have with the whole tyr disguise is the fact that Odin literally had all of the plans and ideas that kratos and the gang had and he still managed to fumble everything in the end. Not to mention, when brok started to catch on to his disguise why not prioritize gallahorn? (don’t know how to spell it) I highly doubt Atreus would still be willing to work for Odin after killing brok and based on his boss fight he can instantly teleport to a location (I’m not talking about the raven teleportation. I’m talking about the one where he levitates off the ground and teleports to the other side of the field.) had he took gallahorn instead, he would be able to control when ragnarok starts and prevent Asgard from being invaded. He can always go back for the mask another time.

These are more nitpickes than anything, but going back to GOW 2018, I spotted some mysteries or questions that were never resolved and I expected Ragnarok to answer them. To my surprise, some of those questions remain unresolved. When Atreus becomes sick and Kratos has to bring him to Freya, Mimir states that someone blew the horn. Who was it? Baldur? Thor's son? In developer commentaries, you can see Cory Balrog (the director of 2018) tease his mates about that moment. It seemed like it was left ambigious as to be answered in the future, but we never find out in Ragnarok. A lot of 2018's worldbuilding tends to tie to Tyr in some shape and form. It certainly felt like it was building up for us to meet him. We technically do but with Odin disguised as Tyr. The real Tyr is found in a late sidequest and you only interact with him for a total of 5 minutes. During the second visit to Hel, Atreus looks at illusions of himself killing the 2nd son of Thor, and the way Atreus remarks that it wasn't him feels...strange. You could argue he was being exposed to his ego and being shocked, but the way its framed and how Atreus talks about it, it almost sounds like he was posessed. And in Alfheim, there was a section where Atreus has a headache and hears voices speaking to him. I'm not sure if I managed to miss what the game was actually implying at that moment. It feels like elements of a scrapped plot point. You could argue it's more of 2018's fault, but Ragnarok could have touched upon these questions.

My greatest disappointment was how short and static the final Thor boss fight was. Especially compared to how varied and cinematically climactic Baldr’s boss fight was in the previous game. Let alone Thor’s first boss battle. Second is how sudden the climax arrives in the story. It needed more build-up to feel warranted. Third is a contributing factor, that the final side quests were cut off until after the climax. Unfortunately this system sounds good on paper but frustrating to attempt to figure out without clear indicators that unfinished side business, can’t be finished until one first finishes the main quest line. That should be up to the player to decide.

The final boss fight was was terrible. The Berserker boss fights were more of a challenge and/or entertaining. The worst part is the potential the developers had! Imagine right when kratos had told Thor we must be better for our kids, and had a change of heart he fought alongside kratos. Odin would power up to max power (fueled by his own son’s betrayal) and launch kratos and Thor to another area where the fight can much more spectacular/destructive. True, but that was worship as a God of War - as someone who the Spartans would invoke to help them crush their enemies. Like they set up that the plan is to "overload his senses" with the spaer but he just falls for the same trick over and over, it would have been cool if they used the cloning ability a bit more spectacularly like having Kratos throw it at Heimdall and then it multiplying at the last moment so he can't predict it. That mixed with Kratos' on isntict could have been fun. In general I think the god boss fights outside of the first Thor one lack "spectacle", in Thor's second fight you're just in front of the hall throughout, at least have him throw Kratos into the air or at the wall or something. Baldur's last fight takes place in one location technically but they give you the giant to fight with and on.

Totally agree with all your points, especially the Heimdall fight. They gave Heimdall one of the coolest abilities ever and the reason it was cool was because it was so overpowered. Then we get to the fight and he tricked way too easily. It really diminished his character.

The only thing "bad" I would say about the combat going from 2018 to Ragnarok is that there is no longer a stance-change option for the Blades of Chaos like there is for the Leviathan Axe. Granted, the previous stance-change got moved to holding light attack, but it still feels like the blades should've had some stance-change option. Perhaps weaker versions of Wrath of Artemis and Icarus Storm as a heavy launch attack and a light sweeping attack, respectively?

Others have pointed out the final sequence was underwhelming in terms of action, which I completely agree, another comment mentioned several obvious concepts, such as why not have a more elaborate fight against Thor like our first encounter with him? a third phase against Odin as he jumps across from realm to realm or takes on a more intimidating form? or maybe we could ride Fenrir, as we fight against the giant unstoppable giant? These are all obvious things that give it away this wasn't an oversight by the devs, but they just didn't have time to make a climatic ending. But I also felt there were perfectly setup narrative opportunities that would improve the character interactions and motivations, such as why not have Kratos at some point save Thor's daughter, while Odin is blindly ignoring her safety while being fully focused on killing Kratos? that would give Thor a believable reason to turn against Odin. We could even fight Odin alongside Thor before Odin kills him. Everything just happened so fast that not only the action was underwhelming, but the narrative and characters shifts felt so half baked. Wish they could've had another 6 months, or hell even another full year, to make a more appropriately climatic ending

The feeling of a character who turns out to be dead the whole time is one of the deepest "oh shit" feelings I can get from a game or media in general, and it isn't done often so it always keeps me off guard. In regards to Fenrir, while seeing him come back to life did help I was still stuck in a rut afterwards. I have no way to play this game, but my friend showed me with consent. Fenrir's death destroyed me more than he expected. I couldn't be there for my childhood dog in his final moments, nor could we make him more comfortable because we didn't even have the money at the time to get him to a vet or anything like that. I still live with regret for what happened to him and how our beloved mut went out to this day. That scene brought memories of that back, and I was fucked up for quite a while, even after being shown Fenrir coming back to life. Needed some Kirby stuff to really pull me out of it in the end. Sindri's grief also struck me hard as hell, and I can only hope he doesn't become a villain or stay hateful. I understand why he's acting that way, as grief can be equal parts hurtful for all involved. Those grieving can take their anger out on others around them. But I hope they'll have him eventually come back around. Even if not as a friend, then as someone who just has moved on as his brother Brok begged him to do. Also FINALLY, my buddy didn't agree with me about Atreus being a little too teen angsty and thus annoying/anger inducing at times. In hindsight, maybe it bothered me because my own Father was a sheltering parent and I did similar stupid shit. Obviously not god level crap, just little rebellions here and there that led to major fuck ups later(like flunking my first year of college, note I never partied, just sucked at being a student). So yeah this stuff was probably gonna bug me no matter what. I get where he's coming from, but I still wanna smack him upside his ginger head and put some sense in there. Although the animal transformations were a nice allegory to puberty and how awkward/out of control it feels for kids at times. Especially so for someone like me, who didn't even know WHY my hormones were so fucked compared to everyone else until a few years ago during my first lady exam. Believe me I was a bit pissed about it at the time. To think I could've been finding ways to manage the shit better the whole damn time, but my sis and I still didn't get looked at til adulthood, ugh. At least I know now. Anyway I'll quit rambling, wonderful video as always btw. Toodles.

GoW:R was beautiful all around. It’s an improvement on nearly every aspect of the last game. My only problem with the Ironwood section was that it was always “almost over” when something else came up. Angroboda said something along the lines of “okay, now you can go home” at least three times. The cave section with the nests didn’t provide anything to the story IIRC and could’ve been cut out entirely. Also I agree that Ragnorök should’ve been different. Destroying Asgard seemed pointless since we killed Odin before the giant got a chance to do anything.

To add onto the bratty Atreus bit, in GoW 2018, Atreus acting out and being a brat was actually and quite literally due to him having his first taste of Alcohol (he does this IMMEDIATELY after Kratos gives him a swig of lemnian wine), but in Ragnarok it's just so odd considering everything Kratos taught him in the last game alone, not even accounting for whatever else he's been teaching him for the last 3 years in-game, plus all the other characters seem to just let it go without dwelling on it when he finally smartens up. Additionally, one other thing that I REALLY disliked was all the details and hints for how events might play out that were dropped in GoW 2018, or things from the previous game that were never mentioned or unanswered questions that were completely ignored in Ragnarok. Here's a brief list: - Jörmungandr's venom being what kills thor, be it the serpent himself or the venom that got imbued into the Leviathan Axe. - where on earth the father of Sköll and Hati is, since it's supposed to be Fenrir/one of the other names used to refer to him - the flying boat used by Freyr and given to Kratos only being used TWICE, one being completely optional, despite the helheim boat trip in 2018 alluding to it having more importance - who blew the horn in GoW 2018 while Atreus was sick (probably Angrbroda but still would at least prefer an official answer) - aesir gods souls travelling to Valhalla by themselves (was mentioned in the previous game when Magni dies, yet neither his nor Baldur's souls are ever mentioned to have been seen in Valhalla) - Surtr being the exact opposite of what his psychic interactions with Atreus suggested back in GoW 2018. - Temporal magic being what allows Sköll and Hati to catch up to and eat the Sun and Moon (also them actually eating the celestial bodies in general which never happens).
