Believe it or not. This movie was the highest grossing film of 1984. It beat out Ghostbusters, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Gremlins and The Karate Kid. That's how insane Eddie Murphy's star power was at the time. Also, I can't wait for you guys to react to "Beverly Hills Cop II". It's a great sequel.

For a period of time in the 80's. Eddie Murphy was the biggest star in the world. He was the world's number one stand up comic and had the world's number one movie at the same time. He also had a hit song! 84 was a monster year for movies. Ghostbusters, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Gremlins, The Karate Kid, Police Academy, Footloose and Beverly Hills Cop among others. This was originally written with Sylvester Stallone in mind. Disagreements over the script led to him converting the movie into the film, Cobra. Eddie Murphy was also planned to play Winston in Ghostbusters but he took this movie instead. Yes. The instrumental, “Axel F. Foley Theme”, was written for this film and it became a international hit in the 80's. Keep up the good work.

I so love the Jenny and Axle and Mikey dynamic. Although I know Jenny was supposed to be the love interest for Axle when Stallone was attached and changed her character, I like the idea that these 3 were poor kids from the street who remained friend and they each grew up and went on their own different path.
@JeffKelly03
@JeffKelly03 25 күн бұрын
The shift away from Jenny being a love interest to just a platonic friend is a bit of a bummer simply because, of course, it was driven by race since having interrational love interests was still a touchy thing when this was made. But I do love the friendship between them. You don't get enough purely platonic friendships between men and women in movies/TV, so it's refreshing when a pretty blonde isn't automatically relegated to "love interest" like originally intended here.

Bronson Pinchot was the only person on set to break Eddie Murphy. The "supercop" scene is a funny story. This particular scene was running late into the evening, and Eddie was getting tired. Director suggested Eddie drink a cup of coffee, Eddie never drank coffee before; so that whole scene was just improvising fueled by a shit ton of caffeine. Judge Reinhold had to bite his lip and John Ashton had to have his hands in his pockets while he pinched his thighs so they wouldn't break character. Nerves of steel 😆

Beverly Hills Cop was not originally supposed to be a comedy. The original script was more of an action movie called Beverly Drive, with Axel Foley as an LAPD Metro Division cop from East L.A. who ends up getting transferred to Beverly Hills. The script went through several revisions, with the Foley character going from being an L.A. police officer, to a Pittsburgh police officer, then finally to a Detroit police officer. Both Martin Scorsese and David Cronenberg were offered the job of directing, and both turned it down. Several actors were considered for the role of Axel Foley, including Mickey Rourke (who dropped out), Sylvester Stallone (who rewrote the entire script into a straight action movie and left the project after producers disliked his changes), and Harrison Ford (who turned it down). Eddie Murphy was finally cast, and the final draft of the script, which was extensively revised with Murphy's input, was not completed until the day production began. Stallone's version of the script eventually became the basis for the 1986 action film, Cobra.

The little smile he gives when Axel says “the super cop story was working” is masterclass in acting, showing the audience he isn’t a bad guy he just follows the rules. It is so nice to go jack and see him as a good guy - which is so rare since Cox became known for playing incredible villains. Lisa Eilbacher, who plays Jenny, was also in another super hit movie from the early eighties. An Officer And A Gentleman, with Richard Gere and Debra Winger. Lisa plays the female Aviation Officer Candidate, who enjoys the "crash an airplane into water and try to get out before you drown" test. It's like a short rollercoaster that goes into a swimming pool and ends up upside down, underwater. It scares the other candidates, all male, and they find it hard to complete. "Can you put this in a good spot? 'Cause all this shit happened the last time I was here..." It's been mentioned before - but 48 Hours is one of Murphy's best films. Got some people you've already seen (Billy from Predator) and it was a huge hit for Nick Nolte. It also has James Remar as Ganz - one of the most intense villains ever in a film.

This movie was an absolute juggernaut when it came out and even though Murphy was well known at the time (SNL, 48 Hrs, stand up comedy), this film launched him into the stratosphere. One of the funniest action comedy movies ever made! Originally Sylvester Stallone was going to play the role of Axel Foley, who's name was going to be Axel Cobretti, and it was going to more more darker, violent and action packed in the rewritten script by Stallone. After giving the producers his draft of the script, it was rejected and Stallone turned his script into the action adventure thriller COBRA in 1986.

The actor playing Jeffrey played Burke in Aliens, while the actor playing Billy has been in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Gremlins and The Santa Clause franchise. For more action comedy/buddy cop films, I recommend watching the Bad Boys films. Hey TBR Fam! Man, you ALMOST called it; the guy who looked familiar in the beginning was PAUL RISER, who was in ALIENS with SIGOURNEY WEAVER! He became famous for the T.V. sitcom, MAD ABOUT YOU starring HELEN HUNT. Anyway, at the time, EDDIE MURPHY was the biggest star on SNL and FINALLY broke out in his first major motion picture, BEVERLY HILLS COP. Yes, the sequels get better and better, so please watch them with us! SIDE NOTE: AXEL FOLEY'S theme song is actually titled AXEL F. It was produced by HAROLD FALTERMEYER and won all kinds of music awards including 2 Grammys, and slaughtered everyone during that time by going GOLD, PLATINUM, and DIAMOND! The significance of his music was the use of the SYNTHESIZER, and BHC was one of the first films to use Synthesized music in its score, mirroring the success of ELECTRONIC MUSIC in the now famous TV show, MIAMI VICE.

I was working in downtown Detroit in 1984, and remember this parade of film production vehicles and police cars being driven by people who were obviously not police, driving slowly past where I worked. The chase scene at the beginning always tickles me, since in typical movie fashion, every time they turn a corner they are miles from where they had been a moment before. Judge Reinhold, who plays the younger cop, was in a lot of fun movies in the 80's. The best of these was probably "Ruthless People" (1986). Produced by the guys who did "Airplane" and co-starring Danny DeVito, Bette Midler and Bill Pullman, it is comedy gold and I highly recommend it.

I was 13 when this came out, and I was so excited that I snuck into the movie- loved it, of course. Harold Faltermeyer did the music for the movie, and he wrote a sweet piece for it that didn't make it into this movie. He was then playing keyboards on a Billy Idol album, and asked the guitarist, Steve Stevens to punch it up with a guitar solo, and they did that in only a couple hours. This piece of music became the main theme for Top Gun, and won them an Oscar- Steve had completely forgotten even doing it. Harold also did the music for Fletch- another hilarious movie with an excellent crime solving plot.

Ronnie Cox (the lieutenant) has been a beloved singer songwriter and actor in Hollywood for like 4 decades, his persona for most of that time was much like this movie, an affable good man you could count on... THEN paul Verhoeven made him 2 of the most vile characters in cinema in RoboCop & Total Recall, having seen those 2 movies first as a kid i was absolutely shocked that he didn't turn out to be "in on it" in this movie because he was so good as a villain. Once you see the stuff he did before this it becomes even crazier that Verhoeven even thought of him, he so sweet and nice in stuff. (He's great as Jellico in Star Trek TNG as well )

Eddie Murphy's 4th film, first leading role and also his debut as producer. The beginning of his reign as an comedy superstar on film. Produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer (pre-Top Gun). Grammy Award winner for Best Score Soundtrack in Visual Media, Oscar-nominated for Best Original Screenplay and the No.1 film of 1984 (dethroning Ghostbusters). The score is by Harold Faltermeyer and the 'Axel F' theme is truly legendary. As well, this film's soundtrack is one of the greatest of the era. Movies about Cops prior to BHC were either dramas and or thrillers. Afterwards more comedies about cop characters came to be. Part 2 (directed by Tony Scott) is a major winner of an sequel. Part 3 (directed by John Landis) is the worse and you will be disappointed. Part 4 aka Axel F hitting Netflix before BHC's 40th anniversary is going to be epic.
