This game, 14 years after the previous 2D Mario game, brought back the original style that Mario was well known for, and sold extremely well among owners of the Nintendo DS. Today, we look at what this game could've been like, and see the much less vibrant style that Nintendo was originally planning on going with. The game files also have some unused music that sounds different to the final version. Also, Wario and Yoshi may have been cut characters from this game! Watch the video to find out more!

I unironically want NSMBDS to be in Mario Maker at some point. I think it would make the game feel much more like "an evolution of mario." It's wierd going from 2 NES games to an SNES game then all the way to 2 HD Wii U games. It'd be really cool to see the sprite art in HD and have 32 bit songs in the game

I thought I was the only one. And it's not like the other NSMB games which basically all look like the wii u version. The models, graphics, and music is all different so I never understood why they never put it in SMM.

I imagine the main reason there's a lot of SM64 DS assets in the game's files is because New Super Mario Bros. likely used the Super Mario 64 DS Engine. It also explains why the same mini games are there as well.

The co-op being removed hurts me more than all of the other cut content. That would have been so much fun with my buddy when we were younger. Star Battle was alright, but the co-op would have been much better. Or both.

I heard they gave the developers a more powerful experimental DS (nitro) so they scrapped off a lot of things from the intended game so it could work on an actual publicly released DS.

In Super Mario Bros. they left more then 100 unused levels, but made only 2 frames for Goomba, because they didn't have enough memory to make more complicated first enemy

To be honest I really dislike the New Super Mario Bros games' textures and models. It looks like tacky claymation to me. It feels like a huge step down in style than the games before it. But I understand why people like it.

I just realised. Nsmb= smb (the very first level is reminiscent of 1-1) Nsmb wii= smb3 (in world nine most levels have the same semi-solids) Nsmbu= smw (the secret world is identical to star road and squirrel suit is very similar to the cape) This is why they all say "NEW" before the title

This game was going to be so similar to Super Mario 64 DS. Someday I hope they go back and make a 2D Mario game with Mario, Luigi, Wario, Yoshi, and Waluigi. And add the physics of Mario 64, punching, long jumping, backflips, etc.

That part when you said World 6 would be a "machinery" world. It reminded me of Donkey Kong Country Returns for the Wii. World 6 was actually a machinery world. And since New Super Mario Bros gave a whole new era to the Mario series, I guess you can say DKCR gave a whole new era to the Donkey Kong series, considering that both games have 1 different word in their names while having the rest of their name similar to their original games. Super Mario Bros ---> NEW Super Mario Bros Donkey Kong Country ---> Donkey Kong Country RETURNS ........Clever I say ⚆ _ ⚆

Fun fact: New Super Mario bros ds was supposed to be a 2d version of sm64ds as it has the full moveset there are also mitigames from sm64ds.There were also characters from sm64ds intended to be on this game but got cut.There also are animations from sm64ds in New Super Mario bros ds used when you get a key and there are voice clips from sm64ds there.

man, if they ported the entire New Super Mario Bros. collection to Switch I would definitely buy it. I think I'd buy U Deluxe at 30€ and tbh I feel Mario U Deluxe would have of been a better choice than Super Mario Maker 2 for me and I think it would be really fun co-op. Today, I completed New Super Mario Bros. 2 for the 2nd time and I have to be honest that I liked every level in NSMB2 more than every level I have played in Super Mario Maker 2, both Story and Online levels. That said, I don't regret buying Mario Maker 2 because you can create your own levels and the online multiplayer was really fun, I just wish Mario Maker 2 had a lot more stuff that you could put in your own levels and that online was free

This games music is burned inside my head, it’s so good! I also really enjoyed playing through the game in general. Great video! It’s really cool seeing this stuff. You know, I actually have a pretty cool idea. Maybe you could do a few smaller episodes (maybe with guests?) that you cover requested games that don’t have very much cut content. I don’t think the Poképark games would have enough for a full episode, but maybe enough for a shorter episode. Just saying!

The one on the article was extended to over 1 minute because I felt that the song needed to be heard in its entirety and I felt that that included a loop. The song loops 3 times and I know because I made a brstm file when I ripped it and used vgmstream to loop the song 3 times.

1:44 i got that whenever I used cheats, some sort of bonus level would appear in the first tile (the one before the first level) of the first world, it was a recycled world 1-1 (if I recall right) with all the koopas looking in that way

Maybe the koopa at 1:49 was intended for a cutscene or maybe and object hitting him over. Or maybe meant for any time giant mushroom mario steps near or on him. Or maybe when the lighting bolt at 2:47 was used it would make koopas nearby fall over. And maybe the curved red line at 2:40 would appear over the koopa. (As a lightning bolt) and at 3:15 the bouncy brick block would have been used for a bouncy level. Just like the mushrooms are.

Man, some of those cut World themes sounded cool. I would have really liked to see what the machine themed one would have been like. Especially now since all the New Super Mario Bros. games always have a mountain and a forest World, and a machine and prehistoric one would have been really interesting.

Most of those 3D objects are used in Super Mario 64 DS. They also share mini games.

Some of these files looks like they have a general asset set for all the games, which is why some assets are found in other games such as Mario 64 DS etc
