After watching this video,.it convinced me to just buy a new (NON-TCL) tv. I only paid $280 for it. $50 for the strips, at least an hour of time, tools like double sided tape, permanently cutting the reflector, and a high chance of screwing something up. And even if you fix it, chances are extremely likely another strip will go out again unless you replace them all. Learned a lesson though, you get what you pay for. They clearly designed this TV to fail right out of warranty.

But $50 for the strips gets you all new pieces. "chances are extremely likely another strip will go out again unless you replace them all". When you do this repair you replace ALL the LEDs. Because ya, there are 36 LEDs, so 36 chances of failure. Only 1 out of 36 could fail this TV. So, replace them all is what you do.

In what world does someone have the time to repair this ? The initial comment made it sound as though it was a 5 minute job. This is all day affair and there’s a good chance you will break the screen or lose some parts. Really would have preferred a, “sorry man, go find a new TV unless you are an expert electrical engineer”

Great walk through. You do miss out a few key parts as stated in some of the comments. The boards at the bottom connected to the ribbons would easily tear if not aware. Also for a glue separator, i used an old plastic spiral notebook cover. Worked like a charm. Glass came off super easy and was set aside until re-assembly. Overall took me about 4.5 hours to complete. Worth it for me. Thanks for the tutorial.

One very important step was missed. It's important to carefully pop the scan drive boards out of their plastic holders, and being very careful of the ribbons, tape them to the top of the panel with masking tape. One piece on each end of each board will suffice. If you don't do this, you will rip the ribbon cables right off of the screen panel when you lift it out of the frame.

This worked perfect to fix the initial problem but I ended up having to junk the tv anyway because the adhesive is quite strong and the screen broke while disassembling. Can’t stress enough how delicate the screen is and even if you follow the steps exactly there’s a risk of breaking it. I finally took apart my 55S405. One thing I did notice is that all 8 of the LED strips are NOT securely attached to the back panel. All the screws are tight, but there's a little wiggle room by design. The screw threads are raised just a little bit higher than the LED strip, so there's not enough heat exchange from the LED to the case back plate. I would guess that's the reason these are failing so soon. After testing my LED strips, I found 1 out of 36 LEDs is dead. And wouldn't you know it, it was an LED at the top row where there's the most heat. Before replacing all these strips, I'll be adding some thermal paste/glue to all 8. Each screw could use a washer to fit around the raised thread too to hold the strip more securely. But you'll need 28 washers.
@jemalas
@jemalas 2 жыл бұрын
I read your comment before fixing this TV and looked at it too. You are right, aluminum led PCBs barely makes a contact with huge aluminum back plate (supposedly to get rid of the heat). I think that wiggle room is 100% not intentional and is manufacturing error because they did not calculate little metal pieces arising around the hole after you drill it from behind the metal plate. These tiny metal bits adds just enough height so whole assembly is not possible to secure tightly and make a good heat transfer. What I did is I used Dremel and grinded each led srip mounting hole for a few seconds, it was enough to remove those tiny pieces and new (as well as old) led strips screws in very firmly, no need for washers. If you would add thermal paste it might be even a bit overkill, I did not since it looked more than enough heat transfer after this grinding mod. Also in my case I found some black tape used in manufacturing right under where led strip supposed to make a contact, so I removed those pieces to make metal to metal heat transfer (I believe manufacturing error no 2). But also I would recommend to remove that final white reflective sheet without cutting it like in this video so you won't damage it while grinding + it is not that bad to remove at all, I removed it intact without any tools, just keep steady pressure starting from the corner and allow some time for double sided tape to release it, it is even faster than playing with new double sided tape. After I was done I can already feel slight warmth on that huge back aluminum panel from the leds while tv is working. I paid 18$ for complete new led strip set from aliexpress and waited around 2-3 weeks for it to arrive, and the new ones looked the same as originals. And like somebody mentioned somewhere here before don't use any thin plastic piece to remove the glue from the panel, this is super risky, just unclip the top plastic inner filter frame and lift the whole thing.

Another note in addition to the comments below about the scan drive boards: DO NOT fully cut off the reflector sheet segments. Instead of fully cutting away the reflector sheet, I was able to cut a slit along the top edge of the LED strip and slide the strip out, slide the new one in and carefully tape it back together. This is a pretty good video but the editor must've gotten carried away trying to cut it down to 5 minutes. They leave out a few critical steps and useful tips.

Sounds to me like the backlights are turning on for a brief moment, then turning off, possibly due to short or open circuit on the LED strip. One way to tell is take a flash light and shine it on the screen while the TV is on. If you see faint images, then your backlight LEDs or backlight power supply may be bad.

I would guess they have found a way to render these TVs inoperable just outside the warranty period. Capacitors used to be the big tool back in the day, now they just overdrive LEDs to burn them out. I've seen on another TV brand their power supply can sense when just one LED burns out, it will then turn off the whole strip. Kind of like a long string of christmas lights when one bulb dies, you have to hunt to find which one. There are smarter ways to build these, and I'm sure they know all of them. But that defeats their purpose and goal of consumerism.

Thanks for the video. I have this TV and it went completely black but if I shine a flashlight on it I can see the picture. So it looks like my backlight went out. But why would all LEDs go out at once? Wouldn't that indicate some sort of power supply issue to the light instead?

Hey Robert, I also have this tv and my lights died last week, just letting you know to save yourself the trouble these LEDs are cheap and similar to low end Christmas lights where they cannot remain lit if one in the chain dies. You could test the internals with a volt meter but there's tons of discussions online confirming the absolute horrible quality of the LEDs. The whole thing seems to be designed to eventually fail.

At 4:07 there's no mention of putting back the reflector pieces you cut out while removing the LED strips. Wouldn't this cause less brightness due to less reflection resulting in you to turn up the back light brightness and causing the new LEDs to burn out even quicker than before? Why not use a heat gun to completely remove the reflector sheet? If it's not needed, then why keep it?

@@sirbarky I just tried the heat gun method to remove the reflective paper. For the most part, it worked. The heat actually made the sticky adhesive looser. But, like I do sometimes I go overboard. I used a bit too much heat for too long in one area. The paper is a bit heat wrinkled. But I don't think it will really affect much. The LED lights in their plastic magnifiers are the most source of light. The reflective paper just reflects the light bouncing from the plastic sheet and the edges of the reflective plastic magnifying pieces on the LEDs. So, if you even pulled the reflective sheet out, I'm sure all you'd see is a tiny bit of light reduction.

The back light went out in my 55S405 as well after 2 years. pretty terrible. How do you know that this repair will solve the issue? I've done this repair on a Toshiba TV about a year ago. I've watched other videos showing that most of the time it just takes one LED on the whole strip to put the power supply into shutdown mode. The guy found the bad LED and jumped it with a tiny resistor and fixed it. Me, I'd rather replace the whole strip because sometimes you have 64 LEDs so that makes 63 more chances of an old LED dying again.

Everybody should be rightly pissed off at this. I'm pissed off here because I just got a TV in my shop for ewaste, a 55" TCL with a manufacture date of June 2018 with a dead back light. The guy went out and bought a fancy 55" LG 4k. Consumerism doing it's job. Even if I fix this TV for $10, I'm not sure I'd want this shit garbage in my house. Instead of trying to release the LCD panel from the top frame piece, just pop the frame piece out of the channel, & remove the panel with it still attached. I doubt anyone will reply to this, but why not just melt the adhesive with a blow dryer and remove the whole reflector sheet carefully? Cutting the whole sheet seems like it would affect the picture where the strips have been cut, and using a heat source to melt the glue would fix the issue with it being hard to remove. I'm going to attempt a full led replacement tomorrow and have been puzzling over this. Everyone else I've watched has simply removed the reflector sheet, some tearing it but the picture still seemed ok? This is the one part I'm stuck on how to proceed
@Andrew-el7or
