Sephiroth Down Air is great because I don’t need to go off the stage. And it allows me to use a move in smash that has ACTUALLY Killed someone.

@@TheSquaredCube the very specific move sepiroth does for his down air is the same exact move he uses to (spoiler) kill a main character in his game. The only other one I can think of off the top of my head is coincidentally toon link’s own down air.

Falcon’s dair is just a classic. Even if it’s not the best spike in the game in a void, the amount of moves that Falcon can do to setup into it makes it much more stylish than Ganon’s or Pyra’s IMO. Whenever a heavy spikes you, it’s girthy, but not stylish. When Falcon spikes you, there’s a good chance he just combo’d you across the stage just to let you know he wants you down there

I wholeheartedly agree with R.O.B.'s awkward timing, but the screen stopping a bit when it lands plus the anticipating curl up R.O.B. does before it gives R.O.B. the crunchiest, GIRTHIEST spike in the entire game

K Rool's back air is my number 1 until the end of time. That meaty dunk with the comically large boxing glove is too good. And the fact you have to face away before jumping means your opponent knows it's coming. And they know it's going to happen. A K Rool jumping backwards towards you is just a message telling you to get your affairs in order before it lands.

Byleth’s down air spike is the only spike that actually makes me physically recoil when it lands. The sheer power in that strike is insane, the noise it makes is haunting and by god does it make your heart soar if you’re the one who lands it, while also tearing your heart out of your chest if you’re on the receiving end. No spike makes me as hype as Byleth’s Dair

21:49 As a Ganondorf Main, I totally agree. And bonus points when you kill an opponent by launching him on the ground so strong he bounces up to the upper Blast Zone. You feel the power in the character and the move when you do this even more.

I’m biased but I love Zss’ spikes. Her down air is super satisfying and lingers for so much longer than other suicide down-airs. And Flip kick is a godly spike. Satisfying AND versatile, you can combo into it, you can hard-read and do it offstage, and you can even two frame. It’s so amazing, the only downside is it’s difficult to land unless you play the character

Even Ridley d-air deserves to be above the pits; hitting the spike on that move can actually matter while pit d-air will need 2-3 consecutive sweetspots just to gimp someone at 60%. Very smelly move

@@robot_yoshi but this is just rating the spikes themselves and Pits' Dair would honestly be a better move in a competitive sense if it just didn't spike at all, similar to how Bowser down B has alot of situations where the semi weak spike hitbox messes with what the move actually wants to go for, and Bowser already has a spike with his Dair.

I feel like heavies in general just have some of my favorite spikes in the game. Ganondorf's DAIR especially is my favorite to land! Personally, I'd rank it even above Falcon's. Just the amount of raw power Dorf musters to stomp his opponent's face in always seems pretty hype.

Bayo's down air also spikes the whole way through like ZSS, it just only spikes at her heel, as well as her easily being able to live after using it, as long as you don't start the move below the ledge.

Sephiroth's Dair is so underrated in this video. It's actually a huge 2-frame option, hitting way below the stage. It's powerful, cool, a reference to FFVII, satisfying, requires some semblance of skill and it's actually useful in a lot of matchups.

Only from DJ off BF mid-platform height, barely recoverable without wing (assuming you're not being launched up by the opponent). Unless your opponent is high up themself, it won't hit with a spike hitbox, though. Using it off-stage is very niche. Even footstool Dair can be easily drifted out of. Sure, it's a thing that works, but it doesn't weigh as heavily as the fact it kills characters below 50%.

DK's forward spike should've been in GOATed tier imo. It's one of the primary reasons I main him, that windup leading up to Donkey Kong absolutely _DEMOLISHING_ the opponent with the sheer power in that swing just makes it INCREDIBLY satisfying to land. Also he can combo into it in multiple ways, which just makes the move even better

Brawler main here. The feint jump spike actually has some purpose as you can mixup going to ledge or going for spike, and it can snipe recoveries with no hitbox

I was gonna say this... you can up b and cancel right next to ledge and still be fine. Covers normal get up, jump and ledge drop. You can even up toss a gordo at ledge roll distance beforehand to create a little trap.

Lucas' backair is a really strong move, it's got a long windup but its perfect when someone tries to close the gap by air, that and air-grab to just boop people with rope snake just means Lucas has really good aerial control and makes up for his bad grounded options with enough projectiles to deny anyone without a reflect/absorb from running in head first.

I'm surprised Pit/Dark Pit's down air isn't at the bottom, it's actually a phenomenal recovery tool...for your opponent EDIT: Nobody in the replies understands the point of this video, he’s only ranking SPIKES, not the moves itself. Who cares about the upwards hit sourspot? The down air spike is only out for 1 frame like Marth/Lucina’s, except it’s even smaller than theirs and has less knockback

That upward hit is actually a great combo tool into fair Puts design is a bit of a mess though a multi Juno character with better ground speed whos main plan is juggle with a constantly dropping up air who kills with forward throw and a side B who’s armour candies as soon as the detection box is activated making us pointless at times

He's talking the spike hitbox mostly, it's useful and you can go for it multiple times without dying. As for the sourspot, it's actually good for low percent combos.

@@Irrationaaaaal up smash is an excellent anti-air , is disjoint and cover an entire plateforme, f-tilt is pretty powerful, disjoint and can two-frames and put in tech-chase with his weak part, down smash is super good in ledge trap because of the range and the little jump at the beginning, down tilt is quiet fast, has range, and can lead to combo and dash attack can be a combo finisher with neutral b/nair who kills at 80%. Those are good move, but they are good at what they do. Ridley has to use all these tools in specific situations. You clearly don’t know the character and his strength. I am not saying that Ridley is a top tier, but his moveset is one of his strengths.

I agree about Zelda’s spike being great. Also Link’s dair is great when you land it but you don’t want to miss it. Peach and Daisy’s down tilt is better for combos than for spiking. Also did you know Peach and Daisy’s up air can spike? Also when Sora freezes you with blizzaga at the right time, you will fall downwards for a slight frozen spike. Also Sora’s first jab meteor spikes as well

I think K Rool back air should be higher just because it's sick af and the fact that u can combo it from forward throw. (K Rool's spikes are also equal to DK's spikes when it comes to frame data and damage)

The best thing about Falcons dair is that even if you don't hit the spike sweetspot, it sends the opponent flying to the sides, which, depending on the situation, kills most of the time too.

Kirby Up-B spike is incredible if you time and space it correctly as you recover with it. It kills at 0 and one of my favorite moves to land. If you use it as a drag down suicide spike it's actually much weaker for some reason.

I’m not even sure if Corrin down air is a spike - to me out always seemed more like a drag-down. Same thing like Mii Swordfighter down air. I don’t know for sure if they has a spike hitbox, but I know they doesn’t ever actually launch players.

10:10 actually the hitboxes shown there are a bit weird to understand : There is a huge circlular hitbox that doesn't spike. This one only applies to grounded opponents so we have to ignore it here. Then the long hitbox that covers the entire leg is actually the spike, it is pretty big. However the little circle that's centered on her knee does not spike, and has higher priority than the spike, which means that you have to not hit this hitbox in order to spike, and that's why the spike misses pretty often.

@@wingedbluj1674 If you land both hit boxes, which is most likely the case, then the bigger hitbox has priority over the spike hitbox. It basically gets cancelled out.

@@thegymlogic9781 When you spike people with this it's generally using the nair flipkick combo, which requires the kick in order to be true (and, actually, in order to hit at all). But yeah if you just want to edgeguard someone you can go for the footstool hit that triggers when not pressing any attack button.

Bayonetta's is actually incredibly livable (only need a full hop to live in on every tourney legal stage), a great kill option, and spikes almost the whole way through, I feel you greatly underestimated it tbh

My favorite is mario because of the sound fx and how it tells every character to sit the heck down. It looks so cool at the moment you hit it. Its like you earned and got everything you wanted out of your opponent. Plus the frame isn't that bad if you think about it. But the best part about it is that you ended someones soul in front of everyone and if not someone, at least you and your opponent. Win or lose, you still took their soul doing that one, satisfying move.

mmm, I think Sephiroth gets to break free of the other fall-and-die spikes because it's so reliable at ledge AND is such a famous move from its game canon, I at least wouldn't put it below bloody Min Min. Fab video though, love that it went up on the same day Hopcat did a video about spikes, as if to say DON'T FORGET WHO THE KING IS

you can actually survive after using corrin down air. If you full hop off stage, you get enough height from buffered double jump up b to make it back to ledge, making the dair a useable edge guard, as it drags the opponent down with a multi hit

Fun fact about Ridley’s down air spike, if you still have both jumps you can spam the jump button then click up B to recover to the ledge (usually)

9:46 "Why this move spikes, I have no idea" It's not like Wii Fit Trainer is... Like... Spiking the ball. Like that move is a literal volley ball spike. So making it also spike the opponent makes sense. Also you can preemptively do another side B on stage, cancel it to make the ball just kinda be there, and then try to spike with the raw hitbox since it doesn't summon a new ball until the old one disappears. More setup but depending on how far off-stage your opponent is you can do it.

I was a Mario player in Sm4sh when I played Smash, and getting that Forward Aerial is just such a reward. Looks beefy, sounds beefy, satisfying wind up, and you have to commit to it so it's such a style to land

I really wish gannon’s up tilt spiked. It would be hella unpractical, but the sickest thing ever. It’s based off falcon’s up tilt which does spike and the move can 2 frame with a massive hit box. though if you hit somebody with it they are 99% dead anyways, it still would feel even better if it deleted someone with a massive spike. I remember hitting someone with it and seeing that it doesn’t spike and being so disappointed.

A note on both ike and kirby up special: if you position yourself just right off stage, you can grab ledge on your descent while your opponent still gets sent to brazil which in my eyes is too funny to not put in s tier

Plant’s Dair got mega buffed last patch. The spike is easier to hit now, but I do get that it’s a weird spike to get used to. The hit box as a whole is lower than where most people expect because the hit box reaches further than the animation.

For ice climbers you can do desyncs into the spike so you can do a combo harder than advanced calculus and spike them just for that extra sause

The Pyra up b spike has actually a few uses, such as trading with an opponent that has a damaging recovery. They will be sent downwards while you’ll be sent upwards. Still better do to down air though…

I find the Banjo & Kazooie one fun to go for; you can use it while still on stage, thus not falling, but even when you do fall past the edge, the duo can usually recover I'm surprised about your rating on Shulk's, though, considering it feels really consistent to me... that said, it really is slow, but landing the first hit more or less guarantees the spike in my experience

I remember finding out in one of the best accidental ways possible that Ganon's FS has some spike frames. I was in a 2v2 quickmatch with Ganon/Hero vs Bowser/Hero. My teammate was out of stocks, so it was a 2v1. I get hit off the stage, FS meter is now charged, both Bowser and Hero jump after me to edge guard, I fire the FS, Beast Ganon swings his swords out, hits them both and they both get insta-spiked into the abyss.

As a brawler main, feint jump deserves to be higher. You do it when your offstage already so the spike sends outwards. You can just randomly gimp people with it.

Fun Fact: Corrin’s Down Air isn’t exactly an SD-able spike, You can cancel their down air but you would have to be very high above the stage to be able to spike AND recover. As a Corrin main, I’ve done this about 24 times.

Sephiroth Dair can be used at the ledge to spike someone as they try to grab ledge from below. His sword is so damn long that they don't even have to be that close so to the timing isn't too hard.

Mii brawler's soaring axe kick should be higher, it kills at 0 and you can combo into it, also you can go up to a shielding opponent then footstool SAK and it'll kill if they're close enough to ledge, gaegel has an in depth video about it.
