Fly Tying: Tube Flies Part 2

This is my second installment of the "Tube Flies" series of fly tying tutorials. In this part, I discuss some updates in regards to materials, and then go through the setup for tying using the HMH Tube Fly Tool and Rigid Tubes. The fly tied is a Woolly Bugger, intended to show that a variety of patterns can be created when tying tube flies. If you are experienced in this style of tying, please be sure to mention your own thoughts, techniques, and tips in the "Comments" section below.
As explained in the first video and reinforced in this one, there are no rules when tying tube flies. Be creative and think outside the box; your biggest critic will be the fish!

This is the best explanation of tube fly tying. I grew up fishing saltwater stripers and blues trolling surgical tube lures on umbrella rigs. I tied many saltwater streamer flies and glass minnows. Tube flies have got to be the best advancement in fly tying. Thanks for this great series.

Tim, I've watched alot videos on tying tube flies, but I never got the whole concept. .I really like your explanation on the hook holder. I could see me tying on tubes in the future. ..thanks

I know this is an older video but so good!!! Thanks for the info and one more HUGE benefit for us newbies to fly tying when tying a tube fly... No sharp hook to have to learn to work around when dragging back material! Thanks again!

Thank you very much Tim for making these videos. I have been tying for a while since I am a trout fly fisherman but I am trying to start fly tying salt water flies also. Great videos, and yes I'm ready to try this, I mostly fly fish for panfish right now, but I plan on going salt also and can see how this will work for both, what a great system and your easy to understand videos.

Love the video. I usually burn the back end before I start to keep the hook holding tubing in place. I have never burned on the pin but it worked so nothing to say. The tubing you can get from the aquarium store is very similar to the tube holding tube you used. They do have some stiffer ones as well so it may replace hybrid. I just purchased a good bit of Hybrid tubing and am getting ready to buy more. All the best, Sean

Hi Tim, I had being watching your fly tying tutorial for quite some time. I liked the flies you tie. But unfortunately I'm unable to get most of the material in my country. I wanted to order on line, but was cheated once. Paid for it but never got what I paid for. I wanted so many thing but was fearing of the same experience. Thanks for sharing.

I love this concept with the tube flies. I was wondering how this would work for trout fishing. Here in Michigan i fish alot of streams and rivers and would love the flexibility that this brings to the table

sappervet1980 This definitely applies to trout fishing, though more from a streamer perspective. I am sure others fish tubes for nymphs and MAYBE dry flies, but I don't know of those individuals. Knowing that you can easily carry and adjust tubes is a bonus with this system, thus if you ever attempt to fish streamers on trout, would you let me know how they work for you? Thanks again! TC

Tim they do stand behind their product , I had gone to HMH when they was in Fort Androse I asked them where to purchase their Spartin vise they told me to get it from LL Beans that was about 20 miles from me, so I did purchase the vise, I had tied a lot of flies on the vise . then the hooks was slipping out, I knew HMH had a 100 percent warranty and LL Beans did too ,so I went back to Beans and they said that was the first vise that ever came back, they gave me a new vise with no problem, the 2nd one I have had no problem, so they do stand behind their vises

Tim regarding short strikes. Instead of changing the hook to a longer shank length why not just use a longer hook holder tube. BTW thanks for posting this tube fly tutorial series, it's helped to build my confidence to tie some.

I am new to the game and loving it. Thanks for the great instructions. question: how long was the tube when you started this fly and what determines the diameter of the tube?

Kenneth, glad you are excited with everything, too. I don't remember the exact length, but would guess around 4" or so. They tend to come larger so you can cut them down as needed. Regarding the diameter, it really is up to how thick you want the body of the pattern. In most cases, I add just one or two body materials, and prefer the body to be slimmer than bulky. Are tube flies something that lend themselves to warm, fresh water species? Bass, Pike, etc. ?

Absolutely, they are popular especially for salmon and steelhead, but I know of fly fishers who have used them for most species they chase. The tube length is simply adjusted based on the desired pattern. Good luck and shoot me an email with any questions: tcammisa@gmail.com Tim

Ron, I have a few patterns I fish that are midges, and enjoy both fishing and tying them. As of now, the videos I have related to midges are: Zebra Midge and Griffith's Gnat. There will be more in the future, though I can't say for certain when. Tim
