Unboxing, overview and first impressions of the Retevis RT24 PMR446 walkie-talkies. Are these good value at £25 or should you opt for something more expensive like the trusty Motorola T80 / T82 models?
NOTE: This video looks at the features of the radio. It does not look at transmission or receive performance. I will investigate this in future videos.
After a viewer mentioned the RT24 walkie-talkie in the comments section, I was curious to see how nicely made they are and how the features compare to my PMR446 radio of choice, the Motorola TLKR T80 Extreme.
Thanks for watching and let me know if you know of any nicely made and good PMR446 / FRS performers.

awesome test and demo! Hey a short antenna isn't always indicative of a bad thing! I have a tiny stubby on my baofeng smaller than whats on your walkies in the video and it can get out crystal clear even to repeters and such. If its tuned to the frequencies your working with it will perform great

Excellent....antenna coil inside dosent reach fully to top about half a inch of wasted tubing I just cut mine down and put proper rubber stoppers on end antannae has a small hole which when accessed with a mini hex key turning anti clockwise releases small screw which then allows you to screw antenna off to reveal mini s.m.a I'm using a quarter wave Nagoya on a mini magmount now ....p.s just to inform radio gives a audible bleep and I think a light indication when battery life is running low great review look forward to you're test ENJOY.....

We have these at my work place, we found they don't have good range throughout most of the 88 acres. I don't know if upping the transmitter power will help with the range or they simply aren't good enough for the size of the site.
@tdcattech
@tdcattech 5 жыл бұрын
PMR446 should be OK for 88 acres but you'll be pushing it if there are any obstructions or sudden changes in gradient. Open land should be fine. Transmission power would help a bit but it kills the battery life and is, of course, not legal :-)
@BeastyBill88

@@tdcattech We finally clicked on what has been causing the problems, in certain areas of the site you can pick up signal no problem as there is probably a few trees/bushes and a couple of fences in the "line of sight" between radios, where as the rest of the neighboring sites have large warehouses (as the site is located in an industrial area) which aren't letting the signal through, so unless we upgrade to more powerful radios under a business license we can't really use them as I'm sure the company would rather not us not break the law for the sake of a few radios. I did find your video on why is walkie talkie range always poor very useful. Thanks for all the info :)

Hey Guys, i am after bang for buck walkie talkie here in australia for work. i work in open/ some tree lines and shrubs over 100 acres. walkie talkies rated up to 3km dont seem to work. is there a walkie talkie you could recommend for range and clarity with ear piece and maybe lithium batteries or re chargeable which last up to 10 hours+. any advice or suggestions will be appreciated. thanks

Unfortunately your best bet is a 5 watt GME or icom you can buy one of the Chinese radios but would recommend making sure it can be programmed for 477 mhz at least it will not be on a random freq the might interfere with police fire ect

Good mornig. What's the range? Did you tested? Thank you
@tdcattech
@tdcattech 3 жыл бұрын
Range is identical to all PMR446 units. 100-200m in a built up environment or building. 1-2km rural and 10km+ line of sight. In my testing, there are no outliers with fixed antenna walkie-talkies like this. They all perform very similarly.

The antenna is longer on the Retevis because it has 16 channels, where the Moto has 8. It has to accommodate the extra frequencies. Using the pc software, I just switch all the CTCSS & DCS tones off, that way I can hear anyone transmitting nearby. The transmit power can also be turned up to 2 watts too.
@Ixquick979
@Ixquick979 5 жыл бұрын
Length of the antenna doesn't have anything to do with the number of channels. Length of the antenna depends on the wavelength of the radio wave, difference between the wavelengths of this frequencies is to small too make much difference on the antenna length. Also since those extra channels are higher in frequency it means that their wavelength is smaller so you need smaller antenna.
