Teach your dog the retrieve, FETCH or BRING requires one basic component and that is the HOLD. In this video I address this component. It is a basic that is often overlooked in dog training whether competitive obedience or just training any dog to fetch.
The full video of part one is available in my members section:

Teaching your dog the basics of dog training is a fun way to bond with your dog and give them the best life possible.

Thank you for another great video but particularly in this video you gave us an idea of the time it takes to train this. It’s good to know that it takes 6 to 12 months to get to this level so I have to be patient with myself and my dog and not expect immediate results. Sometimes you and your beautiful dogs make these things look so easy that I get disappointed with myself when I cannot communicate what I’m asking my dog to do clearly enough to get her to do these things.

Great hold. I've found that with my lab, it usually takes a good week to teach more complicated behaviors like the hold/release. Labs, at lease my girl, self-taught several things and I swore she understood every word when we were playing and/or training. From 8 weeks old on, she was brilliant. Took her on a road trip of several hours when she was 10 weeks and she would whine when she needed a potty break. Same while we were at the rental house. Anyway, back to your hold/release training, it seemed that the training finally just clicked and that 's what I was seeing the last 3 hold/release commands.

Mr. Cabral, I really like it when you mentioned the time line that you think it should take for the dog to understand and replete the command such as HOLD. If you can, please incorporate this information in your videos and ask Q&A’s to help owners and trainers to understand it takes a good amount of time spent with the dog during training. This information can cut down on some training anxiety that develops in the mind of the owner or trainer. Thank you
@Rouge_7
@Rouge_7 4 жыл бұрын
I agree with Mitch. People see a training how-to video that has either been edited from a few, or the animal already knows what the command is and how to do it. So many owners expect the dog to understand what is being required and become extremely frustrated with their dog.

Hey Robert, I have been watching your videos for advice and opinions for awhile. I'm looking for a little advice or an ask me anything question. I feed my one year old German Shepherd kibble, but I would like to start feeding here a couple chicken necks or a turkey neck at night as a bond to clean her teeth and add a tasty treat after a long day. Do you think it would be safe to feed kibble and add a raw component to her daily diet? Thanks!

I am trying to teach my dog fetch, I got a late start with him and it's going slowly. two problems I have right now. 1. he does not hold the object for me 2. he always picks the item up (no matter what it is) from its side no matter if it's the easiest way or not. What are some ways to influence the right behavior or correct the current behaviors?

Wow Dwayne has grown big! Props to that dog! And his owner of course. I wanna take the opportunity to ask, since you are talking about the basics, what should I expect from my dog in terms of responding to training ? I mean, he's 7 month old (almost) and has a pretty solid sit, bring, get it, come (by solid I mean he knows the commands and 70% or 80% of the time responds right); a regular down and fetch and I'm teaching him to go around me and get in between my legs (later I will add some more to this last exercise like walking and turning with me). But the question is, how much should it take for him to learn one given excercise (generally speaking). Sometimes he just nails one given exercise it everytime and on the next day I get frustrated because he doesn't respond, then I remember he's just a puppy. Can you make a video on this subject ? It will be very much appreciated and informative, I'm guessing other people has this doubt too.

He's a weimaraner by the way, pretty intelligent dogs overall, I'm not having any difficulty training him, but the times for each command to get properly learned it's something that bugs me.

My question Robert is in previous videos, you mentioned not rewarding the dog with the item you ask it to leave, but in this case, you say out, leave it, and then hold with the same object. I don't know the time frame between videos and whether your philosophy on this changed.
@funinediting
@funinediting 4 жыл бұрын
When teaching leave it, your dog needs to know it won't always get the object you are asking it to leave alone, once it's learned leave it, you can give it that thing sometimes as long as you said it's cue word to take something

My rough collie would fetch and bring back flawlessly as a pup....now she refuses to fetch as year old....at 12 weeks little training she would fetch, bring and drop then sit till I throw it, wonder why she won't do it anymore?

Pure laziness. I have a rough collie/blue heeler mix and she does the same thing. She used to love fetching toys and would even bring me squirrels back when hunting. Now she just looks at the object and lays down lol

Hi Robert, is it possible to train a small dog to hold too? How do you get your dog to take it and not run away with the object? My dog takes it from me and runs away almost immediately, he knows the basic commands like sit down stay etc.

Why do you think a dog must love everything he asked to do? Do you love everything you’re asked to do? This dog will love the process of retrieving. Hold is just a part of it.
