I’m pretty lucky to go to a relatively progressive STEM centered school, where they encouraged us to look at the bad things in history. To hear that It’s commonplace to just glaze over stuff like that makes me mad knowing they are fully capable of teaching the full story.

@@Tee.Dee3 I mean, yeah, my teacher is currently insanley harsh on my paper saying I am not allowed to use certain words in my language because they SOUND too English (They are not according to our language control but whatever) While they are correct that college teachers will be more easy on you when it comes to things like sleeping in class that's because you are paying to be there. They don't give a shit if you are wasting your own money to sleep away your education. Most college educations don't even have mandatory attendance so you can show up to the test and do it and never come back. (If you are not a course with oral exams, lab tests, or obligatory seminariums ofc) In highschool the teachers have an OBLIGATION to keep you inside the school and they lose their PAY if they fail this too much. They also have a OBLIGATION to get YOU to pass as a student. Or again they might get punishment or even the boot for being a bad teacher. So highschool teachers who are trying to teach the most hard to control category of children (snarky teens) being tried controlling assholes isn't too weird when they might be trying to controll 7 or 8 classes every single one with a group of snarky unintrested assholes and a group of pressured girls who will break down crying if they get a B instead of an A. I understand if it makes a teacher stressed beyond belife

I remember my first day in college. I can't remember my teacher, but their speech has been etched in my brain forever. "I see a lot of new faces out here. Fresh out of high school? OK, let me make this clear; if you need to go to the bathroom, just go. You are adults now, you should own responsibility for your wellbeing no matter what any lowlife tells you. If you are late, please be as quiet as possible. The less attention we draw to you the less disruption to the class there is. There are probably more patterns of behavior your teachers before have instilled into you, and it is not my job to undo all that. But for the sake of having a smooth semester, we are going to fucking try. I am horrible at math, which is why I teach English, welcome."

Back in Highschool I used to take virtual Early College classes at my school and my History Professor would tell us about an exam, open it a day early, tell us we can do it when we have time, and then she would say "make sure to write flashcards to remember, but honestly, I'm not there to take your notes away so.... you know, you could totally use your notes to cheat. *smile and wink. I'm sure a lot of you are going to cheat now." and she just laughed. She also wrote out the notes for us in full. Definitions, dates, and all. She even sent us money just for participating in class. The most she's ever given out at once is $5. Add that with the other $36 I got saved up from her. She was great, nothing like some of the Highschool teachers.

Not because the curriculum is hard but because the professors don't really care whether you fail or not, they're still getting paid a lot of money. If you don't do your work, that's on you. If you're failing, a great Prof will ask why and offer advice. The rest will let you fail.

You're giving me too high expectations for college. While I do expect they're more laid back because they know I'm an adult, you make college seem like a cakewalk

My Ethics professor didn't meet us on the first week (still online set up in my country, but I've gotten him as a professor for 2 earlier classes, so I know him). And when he met us the next time, he said "I'm sorry, I didn't go to work because I was feeling lazy." And he said it so formally that I laughed and thought, "sounds like him." But really, he's great and very engaging in discussions so you'd be really immersed when there are lectures going on, also leaves a few minutes to the schedule and turns off the recording so we can just share stories with each other. This man is his department's head.

Had a guy in my English class last semester fall asleep right at the start of class, professor noticed and said "let him sleep he needs it" and we moved on. Greay guy.

Last year in university we had class the day after Halloween and one of my teachers was like “I know most of you are probably hungover so I won’t ask anyone any questions today, you can just rest” such good vibes

For the highschool history one, I'm so happy my teacher a was the opposite. He was the only teacher who I'd ever gone to during my lunch periods to actually talk about subjects with. Dude was awesome

Funnily enough, I napped a shit tone in my high school science class and my absolute lad of a teacher said one time as I was just falling asleep, "let them sleep, if they're falling asleep in class they probably need it." immediately became my favourite and yet also became the class I paid attention to the least.

The way I’ve seen it in classes I’ve taken/taught at university: There is some tough content here and you have to swim to the boat, but we aren’t trying to fail anyone. The key is to know yourself well enough to know what you need to do to succeed. It’s a deeply personal thing, some people need to study for hours each day, some people don’t even need to go to lectures to 4.0 the class. If you need extra help make sure you seek it out because almost every university has tons of resources available from TAs to Office hours to writing workshops.

The high school teachers takes on what college is like are so unhinged sometimes. In my country, future teachers usually go to a separate type of university, so when I got to my non-teaching kind at some point I was like, "Ah, makes sense, teachers didn't actually *go* to this type of university, how would they know what's that like".
