Plants have an astounding ability to utilize complex biosynthetic pathways to create a wide array of products, each serving its own special role in basic support of life (e.g., for energy or building blocks) and also for enhancing the likelihood of survival and reproduction - such as for resource competition or defense. Over time, humans and animals have learned to harness many of these plant compounds, referred to as metabolites, to serve their own needs. The aim of this lesson is to introduce you to the major classes of medically relevant plant metabolites and discuss some of the basic mechanisms underlying their pharmacological action. We’ll take a deep dive into one of the largest classes of plant compounds - the phenolics, and address other classes in other lessons.

Is there a better way to classify these compounds? and Is there a book you could recommend about this, other than Harborne (1989), thank you for this video though it was very informative.

Awesome info! I’m interested in the production of many of these metabolites and how it varies throughout different growing practices. Since endophytic microbes can produce many of these compounds, I wonder how much the microbes play a role in the forming of these compounds in plants. My theory is that certain microbial metabolites are endophyte specific. Herbal constituents by Lisa ganora.

thanks Dr. Cassandra- studying few of the lessons presented. Wanted information about phenol ( phenolic , polyphenols and the like ) for herbal , natural alternative phytomedicine. polyols , alcohol sugars too. Noticed you use the term ethnobotany? Not a concern for someone practicing "alternative" therapy like I do. All one needs know is a cat is in fact cat and plants are not animals. Next question , compounds or constituents ? In my book, which will be written short lon_ I call everything NOT animal phytomeds exception mineral or NOT living ie vir. and the like. UNLIGHTS energetic proces' finding the books to read..... please keep up the good work (s) Wait for this! book. Help all you need insuxxn isnuxxn is all. willow fee? See.
