Hello Fergus. Well, I absolutely agree with you that one doesn't require a degree to follow their passion. I got my degree in the field of Economics and surely it was a great experience. However, eventually, I realised that my passion lies in learning English language and become a English language teacher. Finally, tomorrow is my orientation day of celta course. And Monday the course commences. Good work. Keep it up. Best wishes.

Thank you Harpreet! A degree in economics undoubtedly comes with many benefits. I am sure in you future career as an English language teacher you will be able to draw on that knowledge and experience to enhance your lessons. I wish all the very best in your CELTA course!

So refreshing to hear your opinion on degrees..I am so drawn to teaching English and am currently trying to motivate myself to finish a TEFL course but was a bit worried without a degree there wouldn't be many options..I am a mature student and have no interest in studying a degree at this stage in my life..especially as I dont believe it's necessary to become an exceptional teacher..Excited to discover your channel as I am a recent resident to your homeland and spend days off discovering the beautiful lakes and forests in Cavan😁

Thank you for sharing your perspective Clare. I'm happy to hear that not having a degree didn't stop you taking on your TEFL course and I wish you all the best in finishing your course. Where do you plan on teaching once you're done? You lived in Cavan!?! a beautiful part of the world :) I hope you have good memories of it!

Greetings Mr Fergus and salutations from my delightful wife and myself. It is with true honesty that I humbly admit that my delightful wife continues to say that I am one degree away from much madness - oh please let it be that she is making as you say - the crazy talk!!! - I wish you much peace and happiness from the Almighty

The problem is that some people think that they can teach English just because they can speak it. Celta is just an entry level certification and has never required a BA degree. To do Celta one should be 18+ and have a HS diploma. Also Celta does not guarantee a high quality teaching. I spent 5 years at uni learning English and linguistics. Later I became Delta certified. To be honest with you, I strongly believe that if one wants to be a successful educator, a degree is a must.

Thanks for your comment and for sharing your perspective. I agree with you on some points. For example I think you are correct that having a CELTA does not necessarily guarantee high quality teaching(although it is more often than not a very strong indicator). However, it does guarantee that the teacher has been trained and has demonstrated enough quality to meet the standards set out by Cambridge. I would also go a little further and say that just as you say a CELTA doesn't guarantee high quality, neither does a degree by it's mere existence. I would also say (as I mentioned in the video) I don't believe all degrees have equal relevance to the profession of language teaching. Take for example a person who has a degree in ecology may have less transferability to being an ELT than, say for example a degree in music. Or another example, It is possible that the person who never went to university but spent years working as a door to door salesperson may be much more adept at developing rapport, eliciting and understanding students needs than a biology degree holder. Having said that, I take your point that a degree is a must. While I may not agree with you 100%, I do see the point that some degrees at least, do demonstrate that the person has undergone at least some rigorous educational experience and hopefully that would translate into their professionalism as a teacher. At the same time, I think it could be recognized that not all university students in this day and age share the same level or kinds of motivation
