Some people said they'd like to know more about what is going on. The tea house itself is important in terms of how it's built to complement the place where it is. If it's urban, does it help the visitor take a step away from the hustle and bustle? If it's near nature, it should complement and enhance the nature and be set in such a way to see it best. The door to the tea house is often low so that all people, highborn and lowborn, have to bow to enter. It is an equalizer. There are several schools of tea ceremony and some are more formal than others, but in all cases, it's important to enjoy the SEASON. The person doing the tea ceremony and the people attending will all be paying attention to things like which kimono they pick, the colors, the artwork (like the scroll and the flower arrangement you see in the beginning)---each might be indicative of what season it is outside. Even the bowl for the tea might have some thought to the season....a deeper bowl in winter to keep the tea hot, a shallower one in summer, for example. A kimono with hydrangeas, for example, would refer to June when it's rainy season and the hydrangeas are blooming. Second, the movements are all very prescribed and exact, but they shouldn't look difficult. They should help us see grace and beauty in simple things like the way his or her hand moves, the elegance of form in doing each step, the purposefulness of each simple act....heating the cup, measuring the tea, stirring the tea, etc. Third, whether silent or whether there is discussion during the ceremony, it's about relationship. The server is wanting the guests to enjoy the tea and the experience, and the guests can express appreciation for the experience. There's a part where the guest picks up the tea cup / bowl and simply looks at the workmanship to enjoy it, turning the cup around. Tea ceremony is also hugely about the five senses. Visually of course, but also those little sounds....the snap of the tea cloth, the water pouring, the click of the tea whisk, the sound of slurping the tea (polite, by the way), the birds outside....the taste of the hot and bitter tea served with a small sweet to balance the taste....all to remind us that we are here NOW in this moment, that nothing else is paramount, that life is fleeting, that this moment is to be appreciated. If you go to a tea ceremony, don't fret overmuch about knowing all the rules -- try instead to step into the moment and appreciate it as a gift.

This was beautiful and mezmerizing to watch. It does not at all seem like the ceremony was almost a half hour long! I've seen people complain and poke fun at how long it takes to make tea, but this video shows that it is not just about making tea. It is about enjoying tea and life and connecting with what is important.

I thinkmit's not about the tea, but the meditative peace the ritual provides. We once saw a demonstration in the Japanese tea huose in Munich and were impressed. Here I missed the soft small talk of the host and guest (there was a bit but it was silent); it made such a pleasing contrast with the formality of the ritual.

the gracefulness in restraint, the beauty in empty space, a moment of the commonplace elevated to sublime art, the western world so often is too loud to hear the music in silence. thank you for the beautiful gift of this ceremony

The Chinese first invented the tea ceremony. In Chinese 茶道 is cha dao (lit. tea way, the way of tea). Interesting to learn that in Japanese its "Sadō" which appears to be a transliteration of the Chinese term??? :-)

Oddly satisfying and hypnotizing.

even after over 25 years studying Tea i still do not like the preparation of a Chaji, i like the Chakai though, it is more impromptu and cheerful, but Chaji's preparations are really tedious especially for a Yobanashi (my favorite) or an Akatsuki, I don't even want to consider the preparation or a Hatsugama or a Shoburo . But i really enjoy the process of cleaning and all that comes after the Chakai or chaji in the mizuya (which is my favorite room ) . Drying the kettle, washing and drying the bowls , cleaning the tea containers the Kensui, wiping the Tea spoon and storing it , collecting the remaining of matcha powder , washing the Chakin and Hibashi and make sure the Fukusa is spotless , and when all this done and the Mizuya and the Chashitsu are perfectly clean i prepare to myself a very simple bowl of Matcha in my old faithful Mino deep black chawan i eat ALL, the remaining of Wagashi !
