DBT are the gold standard by which I compare all other music. Having been born and raised a white man in a farming family in the Deep South, it has always been difficult for me to reconcile my personal political beliefs and morals with the environment in which I was raised. Hood and Cooley have been prominent voices in my life for well over a decade now, and I can’t thank them enough for what they’ve done in making me feel that I’m not alone. BTW, my 3 year old wants to grow his hair down over his eyes because “That’s how Mike Cooley has it.” I hope y’all never stop rocking.

I'm an Aussie, so not as much skin in the game, and would not have voted for Trump four years ago! Still even though I've been a big fan of the Truckers I don't need musicians I admire to validate my political views. I'm too old for that! Do musicians or people who have a public platform have views and more nuanced or insightful than a truck driver or hairdresser? To be honest I don't think so! Still it's a democracy so the Truckers are entitled to their views and how the proclaim them. I thought Dylan did the right thing in the mid 60s and stood back from being the "spokesman for a generation " or whatever people wanted from him. It ends up defining you and your music. Might happen to the DBT too. I'll give Trump one thing, he was the first significant western leader to call out China's transgressions which are too many to mention. That will be the defining issue of the next decade! Peace

DBT has always sung about political issues... just a lot more vividly w/ The Unravelling... Patterson was in Portland with the Moms and got tear gassed. Mike Cooley actually saying anything like he does here is almost unheard of ! Cooley is usually not any sort of celeb-type. He only says anything when it's getting to him. Hope all is getter better down under... don't let them frack the Gold Coast.

@@klimtklavier Hey thanks for the reasonable and reasoned response, much appreciated and less common these days. No doubt the DBT have always had a political side to them but it more little man/woman struggling against larger forces than party political ! Anyway nice to have a reasoned discussion. I quit the Shot in the Arm Wilco group on FB, despite being a huge fan, as I was hounded by a number of members for telling someone who posted pictures of F..kTrump buttons that it was inappropriate on a music site. I said I was an Aussie, no skin in the game, but decried the overt foul language no matter what your views are. I was accused of misogyny as the party who posted was a woman! What gives? Anyway as much as Ive loved Wilco, the love fest around things such as replicating the curtains in the Tweedy household and seeing everything through a hagiographic lense just got a bit nauseating for me!

To those so-called DBT fans who say, "I like your music but I dislike your politics." or who say, "Stick to music, not politics", have you been paying attention to the lyrics of their songs? "Puttin People on the Moon" was about losing a factory job and the bad economy. "The President's Penis is Missing," calls for politicians to fix problems such as hunger rather than do impeachment against the President's (referring to Bill Clinton) affair with Monica Lewinsky. "Babies in Cages" was about the family separations at the Mexican border. "Thoughts and Prayers," takes aim at the NRA and the cowardly and brazen politicians who give use useless "Thoughts and Prayers," while doing nothing on reducing gun violence. The point is that "Drive By Truckers" has been a leftist political band for many years, if not a few decades. So to those fans who say they like DBT's music but do not like DBT's politics, the fans have been paying attention to the sound/musical style of DBT when they should be paying attention to the lyrics of DBT songs. That is like saying I like DBT's french fries (the sound of the music) but I do not like DBT's Burgers and Sandwiches (messages and lyrics). If you were a true DBT fan, you would not only like their music but also agree with the politics of the band. That being said, conservatives are free to listen to DBT songs but right wingers need to listen to the lyrics of the songs very carefully. If you cannot stand their politics, you might want to find another band that is apolitical or start your own band. Maybe start a band called, "Drive By Trumpers"? . . .lol.
@plainlogic3 жыл бұрын
Excellent rebuttal, without directly addressing any one person! I especially like the part about gun violence. Illinois is a great example of how well gun control works. The greater part of the state has to abide by the FOID card law and Chicago city proper has an outright ban on firearms. I wonder where the gun violence is...

If you make it known that you're liberals, but don't directly engage in politics, then maybe Trump supporters will connect to you on a human level over your music, and realise that the other side isn't as far away from them as they thought, because they could see you guys are humans too; if you start singing songs about Joe and Kamala, however, that might put them off. Love DBT. Vote Republican, actually like Trump a lot. I acknowledge and respect Hood’s opinions and beliefs, and agree with some of them, but feel uneasy with the recent extreme politicisation of this band. That’s the issue nowadays, everything has to be black or white, left or right, right or wrong, socially acceptable or unacceptable, what’s happened to the centre ground, what’s happened to healthy debate? Too much anger, too much violence, no respect for others political views. Trump has actually done a lot of good things, for both society and the economy, as well as some bad things. As all politicians do. Remember, democracy put him into power, and will likely do again. The vast majority of people who voted for him are good law abiding, rational, sane people; non-racist & socially responsible. It’s disrespectful to label us as stupid or racist, or not empathetic, and equally disrespectful to tell anyone how to vote. I suspect that most people who listen to the DBT are educated and knowledgeable people, perfectly capable of formulating their own political preferences.
@ARoll9253 жыл бұрын
Republicans have gone bat shit crazy to the right, that's why there is no more middle ground, I mean to call being against police murdering people in the streets, a president who is not capable of telling the truth, uses the military against his own people, and throws our country under the bus for the likes of russia and israel, a president who defends racists who kill people for protesting their racism, a congress who is worthless, a senate majority leader who steals supreme court seats and is corrupt and hypocritical on a level not seen before , being against gun/school shootings, being against separating children from their parents and locking them up, being against offensive artifacts from the past ie the battle flag of northern virginia, etc. Being for the rights of people to make decisions about their own lives/bodies Is not extreme, none of those things are extreme and to classify them as that says alot about you. what is extreme is what trump is trying to do, banning groups of people, stealing supreme court seats, downplaying and spreading a deadly virus, not doing shit to prevent said virus because its bad for the people who have bought him. if you don't want to be called racist, sexist, xenophobic, stupid, or misogynistic don't hitch yourself to that cult, trump is a cult just like any other cult, and the tenants of that cult are division and the isms above, the extreme thing you should be fighting against is people adhering so ridiculously to trump that they refuse to see what he has done to this country, he has been terrible and if you are going to defend him expect to be called out for it , there is nothing defensible about it, you should be ashamed to be quite honest. you are the enemy of good, because good people don't support that shit, no matter who is in charge, good people call out injustice they don't defend and fight for it, they don't vote for it either, trump has fucked our country up so profoundly it will be with us for decades, if he gets this religious zealot on the supreme court we will literally be living in Gilead, the fact that so many people defend that is gross and rage inducing, it is also very scary for reasonable and rational people everywhere(don't actually think those on your side are either of those things), there is no defense for defending that, it is not extreme to be a decent person and want everyone to be allowed to live their own lives, republicans want to control lives of people they don't like, how anyone could vote for that is beyond me, because someday your side might not be in control. I really don't understand how you could possibly defend that asshole. He along with mcconnell and graham are in the process of royally fucking, you, me, and every other non rich person over. Not only are you gonna vote to give them the ok, you are defending it. Asking for it. I truly don't get it. I hope you will rethink your position. It is indefensible.

Also no, democracy didn't put him into power, democracy is government by the people, the majority of people who bothered to vote, voted for his opponent, a relic that needs to be gotten rid of called the electoral college put him into power, if we had a real democracy he would never have been president, he lost by 3 million votes, some democracy, and now we have lasting damage that will take decades to fix from this clowns dumb shit
