In this video, I tear down the seized Phantom 85 with the swapped MS-460 piston. We found out that the top piston ring got hot and expanded, got snagged on the exhaust port, and busted the top edge of the piston.

If your locking up when you try to start its the bell housing in the clutch. Back the flower nut off several spaces. The pads have finished seating and the clutch spring has internally shifted. Godspeed

The phantom 85 is definitely a fragile engine and needs to be rode a specific way. I learned from experience cause all mine were blowing up but eventually I was able to make mine last for 6+ months

Just pull the head bolts and turn the jug sideways . If its a old seizure it will bind and come out. If its a soft seize it should do it were your trying on the main drive gear.

? Has anyone taken a new one apart and checked the ring end gap ? These cylinders were designed for chainsaws which have forced air cooling, and are designed to pull a cutting chain with minimal effort for short periods at a time. Just driving at speed does not guarantee engine cooling with air flow dynamics in a bicycle frame..... those cylinders, pistons and rings, where designed to run with forced air cooling with shrouds that means the cylinders are cooled from all sides not just in the Front of a bicycle That may not be getting any airflow . A kit like this needs a cylinder and head like the old school air cooled dirt bikes ....

I did not check the ring end gap. I agree with your comment with one caveat, cutting through logs is definitely not a minimal effort task. It's WOT for much longer periods of time than you would expect; certainly no different than the 40 seconds of WOT that it took to blow up this engine, if the log is big enough. In any case, these engines fail in a similar way with the stock piston as well. The issue appears to be an inadequate amount of cooling fins, which yes, based on the damage, it does appear that the rings end met up.

I'd argue that since it's on a bicycle, with no shrouds its getting better airflow, maybe though not as forced. And we're traveling at speed too, however, these engines are designed to be short burst power, not continuous burn running. You have to use the motor in the condition it was designed. I live in a small, valley town in Appalachia. To get up hills and ride (especially in colder months) is so fun and the phantom does it well, but to run flat by the river for extended amounts of time is not where this motor excels. Though if ran right, maintained speed can be "easier" on the motor, this motors failure was due to improper use. If your motors hot already, load a heavy burn on it, you can expect a failure. When riding these bikes you always have to keep in mind it's temperature.

Hi sir i need some help im in the fence with this motor i am a kinda experienced with thsese engines i know these engines well and im on the fence if i should buy or not the phantom 85 if i piston swaped it trimed the port edges ran super fuel rich for cooling purposes and an 16:1 oil fuel mix always and dont run it for more than 20 straight Will the engine blow up on me

Based on my short experience with this engine, I wouldn't recommend it. Reliability concerns aside, the engine was very buzzy and uncomfortable. It also seemed to only want to go fast. So, for my use-case of cruising around town, it was not a good fit.

Best time to run them is objectively the worst time to ride. They love colder weather, but I damn sure don't!

I wanted a phantom 85 but after seeing all the trouble they can pose. I'll just stick with cheap chinadoll. This is what happens to mine engine that had locked up. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/obSCZrRe3NjdgHU.html is what happened to mine. Though not nearly as bad as urs.
