In this video I did a teardown of an old analog piezoelectric vibrating gyroscope that was found inside a Cannon ZR-65 miniDV camcorder. www.kerrywong.com/2019/02/03/t...

wow Kerry, check that out so cool.. I have never seen a piezo active gyro like that.. thanks

Never could figure out why they insist on calling these devices gyros... nothing spinning in there! Just the opinion of an old gyro compass technician. This device senses inertia... a gyro use centrifugal force and precession. Note: a gyro compass also uses inertial sensors WITH its gyros.

Very cool. Thanks Kerry!

Does your caliper have a depth measuring probe/blade on the opposite end?
@KerryWongBlog5 жыл бұрын
Yes it does, but there was a gap between the chip and the PCB so it wouldn't be very precise anyway...
@GeneralPurposeVehicl5 жыл бұрын
@@KerryWongBlog You mean accurate. Precise is repeating the same thing to the same degree.

Try lighting it up with a high power LED pulsing at a slightly higher or lower frequency, then record a video of the device in operation.

Not sure if light would have any effect on this?
@NiHaoMike645 жыл бұрын
@@KerryWongBlog The point is to get aliasing so that the movement would actually show up on video. Otherwise, it would take an absurdly fast camera to capture the vibration.

Would be interesting to connect the gyro pins to a multi channel scope, or differential opamp connected to one channel. That would show the phase differences, when it's being rotated.
@KerryWongBlog5 жыл бұрын
Yeah I was thinking about it when shooting the video, but given the size it was difficult enough to just hold one probe in place....
@station2405 жыл бұрын
@@KerryWongBlog You solder wires to things that are tricky to get probes onto, or just hard to get at. Then connect to those wires.

note : there is a depth gauge on the other side of your caliper.

Very interesting video, thanks. FYI, use the other end of your calipers to measure depth.
@KerryWongBlog5 жыл бұрын
Yeah I thought about using the other end, but there was a gap between the PCB and the bottom of the chip :-) thought I would be able to eyeball it...

8:08 >BOTTOM VIWE Also, is this really a gyroscope at all? More like an accelerometer...
@ludvigjohansson31734 жыл бұрын
It is a gyroscope.

But what did you show? Almost nothing how it works. What is dependency of tilt/pan or x/y/z movement? Poor video at this time.
@KerryWongBlog5 жыл бұрын
Well, if there's enough interests I can certainly do another video, the purpose of this one was just to show what's inside.
@rexsovell.melgar24813 жыл бұрын
@@KerryWongBlog you did not show us what's inside while you move them.
