A few weeks ago I saved a 1972 Corvette from an owner that left it to rot in a field for at LEAST five years with the hood off. Now it is time to dig in a little deeper to see if it can be saved. How bad can the cylinders be?

Basically that's a free engine. It's rebuildable, I've seen worse & rebuilt and it ran for many miles with no problems. Just some good machine work will clean all that up real good. It's always nice having a ready to run engine sitting around in case you come across something that needs a good engine to drop it in. Don't give up on that engine!!

Even if the block is salvageable, 350 blocks are plentiful and cheap. Since this isn’t the original engine, replacing the engine would be the easier and less expensive option than the machine work and effort to bring back that engine
@ralfie8801
@ralfie8801 3 жыл бұрын
Not really, if boring it and putting new pistons in will fix it, why not? From the looks of it so far, this isn't a normal run of the mill 350. It probably has a 4 bolt main, which isn't all that special in a 350, but those pistons, a steel crank, and possibly a roller cam are, I don't know why it has that cover over the lifters, it's not something small block Chevies were built with, but it's covering something different up. If he wants to maintain the power level the car has now, a regular old run of the mill junk yard 350 won't do it, not even if he swaps the cam and heads onto it.

Back in the late seventies I found a 68 Camaro in a field hood up. Bought it. Motor just like yours. Dropped each cylinder down to its lowest throw and honed the cylinder walls cleaned up the heads with a wire wheel and wire brushes and put it back together and drove the car all through high school with my countryboy rebuild. Ran just fine.

@@LSswapGarage1 ---- Might be a real 4 bolt main LT-1! 1182 steel crank with factory pink rods. It most likely has already been bored .030 and you never want to bore a 350 chevy .060 as your asking for over heating issues ( been there ). Maybe just get the block, pressure tested, then Maged, hone it with a Sunnen CK10, recon the rods, rework the heads with a sharp valve job, new cam, lifters & springs, a new set of file fit rings, new timing chain & oil pump, with new rod & main bearings clean everything and re assemble. Heres the heads Here's GM's description: 10134392 Phase 2 Cast Iron Bow Tie Head The Phase 2 Bow Tie cylinder head (casting P/N 14011034) has the highest performance potential of any cast iron Chevrolet head. It is intended for off-highway applications only. Although the Phase 2 cast iron Bow Tie cylinder head has the same casting number (14011034) as the Phase 1 head it replaced, there are several significant differences between these two heavy-duty cylinder heads. The Phase 2 cast iron Bow Tie head can be identified by its redesigned outer water jacket wall with a machined bar between the exhaust manifold flanges. (Phase 1 castings have a raised parting line between the exhaust manifold flanges.) The area around the tapped water temperature sensor hole is also machined flat on the Phase 2 head. The Phase 2 Bow Tie head has a revised combustion chamber design with a true volume of 64cc's. The quench areas beneath the spark plugs are filled to increase compression in competition engines. The intake valve seats are machined for 2.02" diameter valves; the induction hardened exhaust valve seats are finished for 1.60" diameter valves. The intake and exhaust ports are identical in Phase 1 and Phase 2 cast iron Bow Tie heads. The 184cc intake runners will satisfy the airflow requirements of most competition engines while enhancing throttle response and mid-range torque. In unmodified form, the Phase 2 Bow Tie head will flow more air than any production cast iron small-block head. Extra-thick wall sections allow the ports to be enlarged to increase their flow capacity. The manifold heat riser passages are deleted in Phase 2 Bow Tie heads to produce a cool, dense intake charge. Technical Notes: The valve spring pockets in cast iron Bow Tie heads are machined for up to 1.50" diameter competition valve springs. The rocker stud bosses are tapped for screw-in studs; studs and pushrod guideplates are not included. Use GM Performance Parts studs P/N 3973416 (3/8") or P/N 3921912 (7/16") and hardened pushrod guideplates P/N 3973418. Use 5/8" hex-head spark plugs with tapered seats and 3/8" reach. A bare casting weighs approximately 42 pounds. Valve seats are heat-treated.

I am relatively sure the heads can be rebuilt. if the cam, rods and crank are of high quality like the rockers and heads. The boring it out and new pistons you could have a nice engine for later use, without a fortune in it. This all depends on the rest of the parts. You have went this far. This looks like Mike Lauderback's old Corvette from Shelton, Wa. If it's the same Corvette, I drove this car back around the mid 1990's with Mike in the passenger seat. He said fastest the car ever went was when I drove it. We only went about 130 IIRC, but short distance leading into a big curve in the road where I turned around. He had Johnson machine build the engine, and I recall thinking he spent too much for what it was. Looks like it has the earlier 69-70 LT-1 (small domed) 11 to 1 compression pistons. By 1972, the factory LT-1 had dropped the compression with flat top w/ trough valve relief forged pistons and large chamber (76cc) 2.02 heads. I ran a local engine rebuild shop until sometime around the mid 1990's.

One cylinder looked like it was gone, but I scraped it out and polished it up with abrasives. When I first went in the engine was locked tight. 2X4 and a 5# maul got them broke free. If l ever saw an intake fight that hard - l sure don't remember when that was...maybe they were going to take the motor out (why the hood was off) because it was high compression (wouldn't perform on pump gas) sure looks to me like at one time somebody actually took the time & spent the money...anyway - it's at the right place now

1959 / 389 Pontiac never had the intake off from the factory in over 50+ years with NO OIL CHANGES ! EVER ! and always used non detergent oil ! O M G ! had to heat it with a rosebud torch to brake the soils baked on slug loose.

@@jlletaw1954 Forced to use a chisel & hammer to crack it loose, wiped out the intake, no big loss , 2BBl. Motor had a nice steel crank & rods , that was what I was after .

Those are Chevy angle plug heads back in the day you could go to Chevy dealer and buy those over the counter for drag racing. I had a set of those on a 66 Chevelle I drag raced back in the day. they make a lot of power and are highly desirable today for factory only drag racing. I do believe they were called brand x heads.

G275 on the head is a casting date code. Considering the parts counter origin and the later part number, I would guess something like July 27, 1995, or maybe 2005. You would need more information on the PN to identify the decade.
