The greatest thing that happened to me in retirement is I gave away all the plastic bins. Things are in my closets or drawers or gone. I have Nothing in storage. It took two years but just knowing I never need to clean a basement, garage or shed again in my life is very freeing. My retirement gift to me.

@@vivian9803 Oh,believe me,I’m working on it but I have a basement, garage and a shed! They are all neat, tidy and organized and we always have two cars in the garage. However,as long as we have this “Real Estate”,it will be an ongoing process. I’m having a huge, two weekend garage sale in May and already have so much physically piled and ready, in addition to the list of things I need to clean up to get ready.(lawnmower, two fans, steam mop, etc, etc) I’m tired of all of the INVENTORY and have become realistic about the season of life we’re in now.(mid sixties) So almost all of my big entertaining stuff is going,(too tired) along with a lot of craft and hobby stuff. That may be the most freeing I get for now.🤭

Oh my gosh, just think: back when you two started in her house, she had ALL the stuff but your relationship with each other was tense and fraught and uneasy. But the more stuff you’ve helped her let go, the lighter and more truly joyful your relationship seems. There couldn’t be a better reminder that it’s never about the things, it’s about the people ❤❤❤

I would like to speak to April's Mom. After decluttering I was down to two huge boxes of papers, photos and sentimental things. Every evening I opened the box and filled a little basket and would sit on the couch and pick through it. When the first box was gone I was so happy, when the second one was gone I almost missed my evening ritual. I think it took several months, but only about 10 or 15 minutes a day. "Yard by yard life is hard. Inch by inch it's a cinch." So my advice is to bring one bin in at a time.

Add kitty litter to the paint cans. Stir it up and let it dry for a few days. Once dry, you can put it out with regular trash. Much faster than waiting months for paint to dry out on its own. Note: Regular kitty litter not the clumping kind.

My takeaway from this is that out of everything that was stored away only about 1/3 was worth saving. An important lesson when putting items in a shed or storage. Is it really worth storing something? By the time we go back to it, it has become ruined. Thank you for being so open and transparent. Very hard work and wonderful reward. Job well done and inspiring for others.

I think part of being more sustainable and eco-conscious is working with people to not get into a position like this in the future. It’s completely understandable when things just need to go that they get thrown away. When you get to a point in the future where you are doing more manageable, maintenance declutterring it is a lot easier to pass items along to where they can be reused or recycled.

Like with the Dani cleanout, how much work do you want to go through to sell your stuff, either a garage sale or online. And how much do you want to clean to feel comfortable with selling or donating. In the shed case, I wouldn't feel comfortable because of possible water, mold, critter damage. And like what Momma was doing, she didn't want to take the time and sort what could be donated vs trashed. Time and energy resources vs how strongly you want you want to be sustainable

One of my takeaways from your parent’s house series: From day one in the “Depression Room” to this video today, there were A LOT of April’s childhood memories stored and cluttering up her parent’s house and life. So all of you young adults out there who have moved out: MAN UP like April has ,be a part of the solution and voluntarily GET YOUR CRAP OUT OF YOUR PARENTS HOUSE!😵‍💫😖🙄

And... I would add, that we parents also need to "man up" (lovingly but firmly) and give our adult children a deadline to get their stuff out or it goes. When my children purchased their homes, that is what I did. I had enough of my own stuff to declutter to be the storage unit for theirs. We are still on speaking terms... 😆

A tip for the future if it is feasible, put everything that you don’t want on the curb first, post a curb alert ,then fill the pickup at the END of the day. I know many people who have more time and energy than money,(I used to be one of them) who would happily scrub out the red cooler or set up that boxed ceiling fan for their garage. I actually currently would have killed for the large,Longaberger plastic liner ( the one that had the ruined bunnies in it) as I have thrifted that exact but unlined basket! They are so sturdy but hard to find. At 26:35, that entire box of office supplies could have been donated in its box. I once put out to the curb during a garage clean out: a toilet, bathroom sink and TWO broken gas grills. WHILE I WAS STILL WORKING,EVERYTHING WAS TAKEN!🙌🏻 (it always helps to put a FREE sign so they don’t have to ask.)(13:40)

It may have been hard to tell from the video but I can imagine that things stored in a shed in the Texas heat and dampness were probably past their useful life. Molds are an issue, metals corrode and electrical components in that ceiling fan could be hazardous. Hard to tell from just looking at them.

It’s devastating to find things that are the ruined, like the handmade toys, but so tempting to put them aside to deal with later. Dealing with the hurt right away and grieving the loss, feeling the regret but then getting rid of it anyway is so important though. I used to keep things like that but then I would suffer that pain every time I found them or thought about what to do with them, over and over! The only way out is through.

Before I declutter my children's old toys and art I take photos of them and keep them in a specific "Memories" folder. It hurts less when you know you have a record of them!

Besides letting paint cans dry out for disposal,in our area, they will take them with the trash if you let the paint be completely absorbed with kitty litter.🤷🏼‍♀️(regular kind)

Everything you ever needed to know about your momma April is at 20:53, when you say you think Sara doll can go and your mom takes the doll and holds her to her chest, patting her. And she says to the doll very softly, "I'm so sorry." It made my heart crack and my eyes tear up. She is a dear soul, your momma-a lovely heart, very loving soul-bless her!

This was really great to see the clean out of the outside sheds. Always inspirational! It reminds me that happiness happens when you let go of all the stuff that no longer serves your life now and frees up time to do the things you enjoy. It's great to see your mom so easily let go of stuff. She has definitely earned her "Momma Space Maker" title. Your dad singing so darn cute. You all seem so happy. Hope you had a great time fishing! 🥰

I have a schnauzer like your Mom. I had 3 failed attempts to adopt a dog from different animal shelters. Decided I wanted a puppy, did some research & decided on a schnauzer. Your Mom did a GREAT job getting rid of stuff.

I love these where you are helping your mom, they are my absolute favorites. So sweet. You are my favorite decluttering channel of them all. After helping my somewhat reluctant, but dear departed partner with his 55 years worth of “ building another barn “ to solve the prepped for anything, downsize, I find your videos so relaxing and calming and helping me to process the trauma of the those final years. I just want you to know how valuable what you do is. Many blessing to you ❤

I really needed to hear what your mom said about doing all those projects in the former depression room. I've got a sewing room that has turned into a makeshift storage room (a.k.a. junk room) and I *so* need to clear it out so I can sew again.

I'm so proud of your mom! What a success story. She has really come a long way since the beginning of the de-cluttering process. Lovely to see you both sharing such tender moments, touched my heart. What you have gotten rid of has been replaced with countless priceless memories of working together in harmony. 💗
