I really appreciate your mother-in-law sharing her home with the world. These before and afters are very inspiring! I imagine this could be a vulnerable experience for her (it would be for me), but any vulnerable feelings are undoubtedly eased by your loving and respectful approach to these projects. I look forward to more.

Thank you 💛 it is definitely a vulnerable thing to share and I’ve been blown away by how nice all of the comments are across the series. Usually you get some mean ones, it’s to be expected, but we really haven’t. I think it’s just so relatable to people whether it’s you or you parents, we can just all relate. 💛

@@SpaceMakerMethod Your mother in law obviously has an eye for treasures and sometimes we just need someone to help us with the "how to". You two are a great combination. There are people who talk about what others need to do and then there are people who help them do it. Hope she is as thrilled with the results as we are!

I love your style, but I do have to admit that painting everything in muddy beige does create a rather oppressive atmosphere. All furniture, doors, trims, ceiling, windows, all walls, even the floor has the same color. I do think it makes the space feel smaller and darker. The white trims doors, and panels were allowing some light to be reflected; I thought that looked really nice. But to each their own. 😊
@SpaceMakerMethod
@SpaceMakerMethod 2 жыл бұрын
The paint was something that took weeks to decide and we painted swatches throughout the house and landed on this. We decided that the griege added felt more like a cozy cottage and a big hug, as opposed to white. Once the wood door with a window goes in, the space will really transform and with the added hutch if she decides to add that. It’s a slow process now and only a fraction of the overall look, but hang with me and I promise it will all come together in the end 💛
@SpaceMakerMethod
@SpaceMakerMethod 2 жыл бұрын
Just wanted to add for anyone else who reads this: the ceiling still needs to be painted - we’re going to do that with the rest of the kitchen but didn’t have time) - the door isn’t staying- it’s only here until she gets a new one for the front and back which are in the plan but we’re waiting to see how the budget goes abd we had so much paint of the same color we thought it best to use that for now since it’s just temporary Floors- the rug she ordered did not arrive in time and will break up the floor

Had a home health client who did walls and ceiling the same color. As it aged and she became sick, all the same became tomb like. But many people like that look.
@texasstardust6010
@texasstardust6010 2 жыл бұрын
.... I was thinking about that,....I think white trim ( even a soft " off white " ) would have created more light, a more " cottage- y" feel, because I do find the colour a bit oppressive, used everywhere. It's just that it needed that " brightness" of the white , to energize the space. Even had the breadboard been white, or a soft off white, it would have felt " fresh ", and more inviting. I would have used a space appropriate bench , and a place for shoes / etc. It's cute, but I don't see it being as functional as it could be. ...which is not meant as criticism, I'm just looking at it from my own perspective.

I agree some off white to brighten the space would really help to off set the grayge and make it something that can stand the test of time.

It wasn't our intention to divide the kitchen makeover into 2 parts, but with delays due to the pandemic it's going to take longer for the new appliances to arrive and I didn't want to make you guys wait. So we'll be back very soon with the rest of the kitchen makeover. And hopefully the rest of the mudroom/entryway pieces will have arrived by then as well! As a designer, I actually really love the challenge of designing spaces in styles different from my own and with all of my MIL vintage pieces, this project has been so fun to tackle. Hope you guys enjoy! -TSD💛

I always like when old houses get renovated to look a bit more modern yet still keep its character. Adding that bead board is a great idea. Using objects from her storage is genius that way it let her to see what she has. In my opinion, It would have been nice if the bead board and the doors where kept white or another color that way the whole house won't look like a tad flat despite the different finishes. It would give more brightness and surfaces for your eyes to bounce to because of the colors. One color for walls, doors and trims tends to make a space look very flat especially if it is not white. Given the tone of color you chose it might possibly make the house look dark without the contrast. That is just my opinion though. If the in-laws are happy with it then that is great.

We have definitely been thinking of what to do for the shades and we decided that because we still have the whole house to do, we should be conservative now (if she changed one she wanted to change them all to the same) and just add this one to the empty window that’s the same as the others. But maybe down the road if no problems arise we’ll be able to get some perfect ones! I agree, roman style would look beautiful! Do you have any tips for privacy with those tho? So glad you are using Zinsser primer vs: kilz. Zinsser isn't stinky or gooey. Better product

Your trick with the remote puck light for the wall sconce is nothing short of genius! LOVE IT. I understand that styling has zero to do with function, but the foyer needs a small table (demilune or narrow console) for keys, mail, etc. And a basket underneath to hold things for transfer, like library books, shopping returns, etc. Put the bench (we have one EXACTLY like it, except ours is a 3-seater!) under the peg rack and the table under the window. The stool. Why? Who has coffee in the mudroom? The potatoes in the fishnet hanging where coats go--huh? Your makeover is awesome but the best ones are both beautiful (as you have done!) and PRACTICAL.

She actually has another entry way for all those purposes, this is just for the back door for gardening. We’ll show that later in the makeover! Those were actually potatoes and I put them in there because she didn’t have a place for them and she really liked it. You could say, everything is functional for their specific needs.

The panelling was a perfect touch to define the area without having to use a different colour and works beautifully for the feel of the house. You have mentioned it is quite a small house - so having too many colours might add to a cluttered closed in feel? I'm very interested to see how the use of the one colour works in the space - I've not much colour knowledge myself and I'm always surprised how various uses of colour can change a space - I have faith in your choices 😊

You nailed it! She has a lot of pieces to display and that was part of the reasoning behind it… go monochromatic with the paint to allow her vintage pieces to steal the show.

Great makeover, love the paint colour Squirrel. Not sure what the point was to put a shelf up just to put ornaments on which aren't useful!? Love the twin chairs too😁.

That’s a good question because typically in other makeovers I focus solely on the functional, but these pieces are very important to her and having them on display added value to her space.

No need to float a shelf when you have a drywall enclosed space. Go wall to wall. Installing 3 or 4 wall to wall shelves would exclude the need for a hutch at all. Plenty of display space. Then you could use the coat hooks to hang coats.

She actually didn’t want it to go wall to wall unless it was framed to look like a built in. Just preference, so we did a small one that she can take down later once she find the hutch/credenza she wants

I'd gift your mother-in-law with a portable to box. I love mine-I can take it to the job I need to work on. It keeps it all in one place. I'd want my kitchen drawer for my many cooking utensils. My mother had a cupboard on her small back porch. It is a favorite memory of my culinary experience.

Wonderful job!! I love that your MIL has opened her home to us and allowed you to work your magic! You are working with HER style and that is fantastic. The ideas you have shared are so doable, and between KZfaq and yankee ingenuity, we have the ability to do some DIY. Thanks for your great work and encouragement!!
