The Canon EOS R camera has been out for a while, but we think the recent firmware update and the addition of the RF lenses have made the EOS R feel almost like a new camera, the EOS R Mark II version if you will.
We got to try out the new RF 85mm f/1.2, RF 24-70 f/2.8 and RF 15-35mm f/2.8 lenses, and boy, are we impressed by them all.

As many here are quick to call our title “clickbait” before reading the description, seeing the first minute of the video where it’s explained ,or understanding what quotation marks mean, let us clarify this for you. There is not official Mark II of this camera. The placement of the quotation marks around Mark II is to highlight this word as a thought and speech that is stated both in the description and in the video. For those that choose not to watch here is the reason. The updates to the EOS R have been so significant over the past year that it feels a like a “Mark II” version of this camera. However if you are still angry and want to use foul language to make a point in the comment section, that will be deleted. We can agree to disagree, but there is no need for insults and derogatory language. Thank you.

Great review. Thank you. If you have time, I would love to know your thoughts on choosing between the 90D or the EOS R. I've been thinking about it for a couple weeks. 70% for recording KZfaq videos, 30% for stills which include fast action (BMX and mountain biking). Currently using an 80D so I'm really familiar with it. Thanks!

Thanks Clint. I’m leaning towards the EOS R for a couple reasons. First with the new update autofocus is great in photos and video. You can track extremely well. 2nd is the RF lenses. They are vastly improved over their EF counterparts. I don’t see Canon investing any more R&D into EF lenses going forward. Maybe they will for certain lenses but the future is mirrorless.

Clearly, if you shoot action, the 90d is a better choice. If you shoot mostly landscapes and/or in studio, the R is a better choice. It's almost like comparing a 5d Mark iv to a 1dx Mark ii on a smaller scale. They have two different purposes.

One thing that no reviewers bring up about the ESO R is the ability to lock any or all the rings touch bar . As a lot of people complain about the chance of accidentally adjusting a setting. I lock the bar and the front RF lens adjustable ring and only unlock when I need to adjust the thumb bar is for ISO thumb wheel exposure compensation, front wheel finger aperture front lens ring shutter speed. I can adjust every thing without taking my eye from the viewfinder. Not got the new lenses yet saving up but the ESO-R works very well with AF lenses.

EOS R owner & I found your review to be excellent. This is a very user friendly camera, much better than some of the click-bait review sites would have you believe. Canon marketing should watch your video for a few tips on how to market the camera. Have yet to buy RF glass, but I am about to buy the 15-35, and will buy the 70-200 when available; will replace my 24-70 last. i a 69 year old guy with neck and lower back issues, I hear ya on the weight of that high end glass, no free lunch I guess.😏I'm guessing this was a 2-prong marketing strategy: 1) Get the glass out that the portrait/wedding pros & sports shooters require. 2) Get customers committed to the R system by getting them to invest in RF premium lenses.

Yes, you can shoot servo mode eye af, same as the Sonys. Manny Ortiz, a big Sony guy gave this new firmware a big thumbs up. He said the RF 85mm is the best 85mm lens he's ever used (and 85mm is his bread and butter lens). Too bad it's just so expensive.

I have one question - Why didn't Canon launch the EOS R with all these updates from the start? They could have launched their full-frame lineup with the RP first giving them the time to have the EOS R ready like it is now, if it had launched with these updates I would have bought one.
@TECH360TV
@TECH360TV 4 жыл бұрын
It’s a question only the top brass at Canon can answer. I agree though they should have done this from the start. However I disagree with the RP being first. The EOS R was the right move as it’s more competitive to what’s out there. The RP I feel is not ready yet as all the RF glass is more expensive than the camera itself. Doesn’t make for a “Budget” mirrorless system.

It feels to me that it’ll be the RF lenses that battle computational photography in the final fight. Unsurpassed in performance, and unapologetic in size; RF offers the perfect polar position to the iPhone. Perhaps Canon see prosumers embracing the larger form factor as a kind of physical evidence of true photographic superiority. I currently use both systems, but will jump if apple delivers to video what it’s doing for stills

It tracks the eye, but it does not move the lens elements to actually track the focus :):) I can see it in the video. The picture is blurry. See, camera's eye tracking works even when you put the lens in manual. I have Fuji, and eye tracking works even with manual focus lenses form 1980. What I am saying is to find and track an eye is easy. What is more difficult is to keep it in focus while tracking.

I haven’t had an issue snapping a pic and not having The Eye in focus. Also take in consideration this, if the camera tracks The Eye but when you press the shutter button the camera immediately licks focuses and fires. I can set the camera to pre -focus but what will happen is I’ll take a hit in battery life and the lens is constantly adjusting. For my shooting style I prefer the former, but i haven’t had an issue not getting my subjects eyes tact sharp using the new firmware

Hi, I have a theory about the EOS R and why Canon seemed to miss the mark slightly with it - [cropped 4k, single SD card slot, only 30 & 60 fps in 4k & 1080p, M-fn bar... etc].
