Interesting that 'wood dowel' construction is coming back into style. I am a furniture maker, so it is old news to me. As for the stacked block houses, mine is made with wood fiber and cement. Huge insulation and sound dampening qualities. My walls are 1 foot thick. Just about any fiber can be used.

We have lots of Douglas Fir around me. It can support a lot of weight, but I don't know if I would want do do any sky scrapers with it though.

In carpentry we use pegs not dowels.Pegs are split(i.e. continuous grain),tapered and octagonal and not produced on a lathe.The principles and techniques of joinery rarely apply to carpentry :-)

And what is a peg, other than a big dowel. They are used for exactly the same purpose, no matter if you are timber framing or making furniture.

Completely wrong I'm afriaid.Try reading what I actually wrote.A peg is split from a billet,,tapered and octagonal-ish so the grain is continuous i.e. max possible strength,even if not straight.They are then trimmed to size,usually with a drawknife or axe .Dowels are turned on a lathe,of uniform section i.e. not tapered and round so strength is far from guaranteed.@@robohippy

Those wooden houses are far stronger than ones that use metal nails. Wood nails and basically dowels and they expand to create a very strong joint. Also, the dovetail joins are even better. Metal nails and the worst.

0:15 aluminum nails are NOT allowed in home or commercial construction, because they FAIL so comparing the wood nails to them is another fail I also see they do not have a head on them so boards can pull off of the ends. 2:02 Brickawood is just dovetailed boards, vapor barrier is required, the boards that were shown will NOT last long term. 6:55 problem with that product is it depends on having STRAIGHT lumber. 10:07 ok what chemicals are in the product to make a wood product non flammable. 12:48 how could it be AIR TIGHT if it allows vapor through, vapor is LARGER than air, air molecules are much smaller than any vapor molecules
@nickbrutanna9973
@nickbrutanna9973 7 ай бұрын
Who the heck uses "aluminum" nails? Nails are steel. While these wooden nails are essentially equivalent to dowels, they don't have the shear strength of metal. So applications are constrained.

That's why planting trees is important. We can utilize land normally used to grow monocultured annuals for ethanol and livestock feed: Switch to biome-appropriate perennials, trees, vines and shrubs for food and livestock feed instead. The latter means soil creation instead of depletion, recharging of aquifers and watertables, less downstream flooding and wildfires, less water usage, less operational cost and use of fossil fuels, as well as more useful material, localized resiliency, better nutrition for people and livestock, etc.

The log home supplier you featured, best check the data. Was stated a 150 sq ft home took 6 months. That is 10 x 15 and a couple of carpenters can easily finish that in a week and start to turn key ready a month!
