@@mscir yeah, was thinking about deploying units to homeless camps to a central repeater. The unit itself would have virtually zero street value other and the repeater would be up in a tree or on a bridge somewhere with main battery. If it was possible to have long battery life you could manage a lot of camps at once and ensure safety when those persons don't have access to phones and are posted up in the woods somewhere. Thought about solar loRa mesh but those would have street value.

My goodness it's fun to see kids do this. I've done this (probably exact same schematic when I see the parts) back in 1987. Really cool seeing this again. You can even boost the power (and thus range) by using a 12V battery I don't know the specs of these transistors but the once I used back in 1987 actually go up to 30V.

I built this kind of thing back in college in 2004 as a final project. My team was the first ones to use wireless successfully in a final project, our idea was to use it to locate your keys when you lost them. Have a transmitter in a central location and a small, low power FM radio on your keychain. Wish I had this video back then, most of our time was spent researching and circuit building then starting over when the circuit didn't work right. Well done.

You can change the tuning range of the transmitter by reducing or increasing the number of turns in the coil. To raise the tuning range above 108, simply use fewer turns and you can use audio of TV channel 7-12 on an analog TV set or a "police scanner" as a receiver, or increase the number of turns for TV channel 2-6.

The first transistor is an audio pre-amplifier and the second one is a VFO and this is the simplest mode ever from 80's, but we consider this oscillator unstable. I have made too many projects in 90's starting with 7 watts transmitters till 60 watts using the PLL technology which is very stable and used in all Tranceivers. Best memories ever in my life.

I remember building a circuit similar to this decades ago. The frequency is very unstable. Simply moving your hand next to the circuit or antenna changes the frequency. The range is good enough for the house. These days you can buy digitally tuned, stable frequency with LCD frequency display, FM stereo transmitters for under US$5 and a simple modification can increase their power into illegal range.

I totally wanted to build mini fm transmitters like this from kits in the back of popular science as a kid to spy on people. The ones I really wanted were expensive (and tiny), but I did build a slightly larger one (about the size of a travel toothbrush holder). I left it in the room with my parents a few times and went into the other room to listen on my walkman and spy on what they were saying, but it was never interesting.

I used to build his things when I was a teenager like you. But I used to make the antennas a lot longer than that. At one time I ended up bugging my sister’s House across the street about four houses down. What I did was I hooked up the antenna to the copper strip that seals the front door sometimes front doors have a copper strip around them to keep the air from coming in and out. And it worked flawlessly

+d74g0n there's a middle ground between the DIY etched board he made in this vid and breadboards. For something this small and simple you just need a generic little protoboard and solder connections together as needed. I have some projects planned for the new year and I believe I may just incorporate this one into one or two of those projects. Back to the drawing board. And yes, I've seen this before in magazines during the 70s and 80s. One of my teachers built a baby monitor using a transmitter during the 60s and he built a few more for his wife's friends when they were impressed with it. Unfortunately, the frequency was a tad off and the local police station was getting signals on their frequency. He had to round up all the units and dismantle them or he would have faced charges. I can still hear him chuckling with an amused look on his face while he told us about this.

So I made one of these. Except for the circuit was Stronger, because I wanted a higher wattage.(1.5KW) I wanted the signal to reach further. I don't know it's legal to make an FM transmitter. I had mine running for about six months. Until I was forced to shut it down. Some unhappy Suit dudes claiming to be from the FCC. Had a warrant and confessated my transmitter. Now I have to pay off an insane fine, I wasn't even harming anything. I was just propagating an electromagnetic wave. Apparently you need a License to own and operate a transmitter. At least in the USA. My country has turned into such a dystopia. I don't see a reason why they need to govern Electromagnetic waves. It's light at the simplest. Even GMRs which some walkie-talkies have built into them. You still mean the license transmit on certain channels. I'm honestly to the point to where I want the FCC. Defunded. I don't even see a point for that branch of the government.

Whilst that is pretty cool, you should really note that you need a license in some places to broadcast on any public radio band. If you get caught, it can land you in serious trouble and a heavy fine! Keep the power low to avoid interfering with other listeners in you neighbourhood.

I've remembered a good old prank. It were later 90s and I've didn't knew that this word ("prank") will be ever known. It was an "early Internet era". I was sleeping on my physics' lections few times just because the provider's telephone line was NOT busy! :D The prank: an old elevator with doors controlled by a light switch. A protection device. Clever thing BTW! :) It was in our univercity. 1st floor in the main building (nevermind the name it's in Russian anyway). Me and my pal found that a light switch's case is "damaged" (the device was working though). So if you'll put a piece of paper or any small object in that device then the system will be "thinking" that somebody is not in the cabin yet! We've put a small round paper ball there and did gone in a place near this elevator but on a distance so nobody will think that "these guys stand near here and watching for something!". The whole gag was in the situation. If you enter that elevator you usually wait for some time and if nobody goes in then doors starts to close. But if somebody runs into it then everybody waits again! :))) So if a pause between these events isn't very big then people just think "OK". Next others doesn't know that they've waited longer than usually. If an elevator doesn't moves up then some people think "meh, it's not working again!". They usually go out and use a stairway. Few people walked into this elevetor and wait... They wait and smiles after sometime ) Somebody didn't thought out it's a gag and did used the stairway then :) After some time we've seen an elevetor almost full of students. It's a rare look I must say :) Or was. After about 5mins or later somebody did found out that there was out tricky paper ball :) Did laughed a bit and everybody got fun :) The end! No wet clothes, drops or anything tragic to anybody :) It's pitty I've didn't had a camera those days. Film cameras were very noticeable, digital had a very rough quality picture and light characteristics, portable movie were not for our wallets :)

While this now an ancient reply, new electronics hobbyists should start out at square one with not using a screwdriver for the tuning of circuitry. There are a number of technical as well as safety reasons for this, and while using a screwdriver to adjust the tuning of this transmitter may happen to work with this circuit, as you may advance to more critical projects the need for a proper tuning tool will become increasingly important. While not very expensive, such a tool or set of these tools need to be in your kit for present and future work.

Depends on how much current the circuit is using overall, the more current the faster the energy is being drained out of the battery.

I made a fox hole radio transmitter over fm waves and i only knew how to build it cause a book in my elemetsry schools library explained how toae a fox hole rasio transmitter like they used in ww1,ww2 and Vietnam. I did it kne sat morning getting electronics from my schools store thst sells electronics and other stuff for kids to buy for thier projects at a discounted price compresd to box stores and i was 11 and my dad was impressed cause he was in the airforce and havnt seen snyone make a fox hole radio in a long time and he said he couldn't believe that his 11-year-old son would be the last person he saw make an FM radio transmitter like a foxhole one at 11 years old all by myself too My daughters looked terrible because I soldered the wires instead of just crimping so it'll be more permanent but it worked

This is very impressive, but I should add that depending on where you live, there are applicable laws concerning using the broadcast FM band. In the U.S., there's a narrow slice at the beginning of the broadcast FM band (around 88Mhz) where you can broadcast with a small, low-power transmitter (like the kind they sell to pipe audio from your phone to your car radio). Also be aware of the power output limits in the regulations. A friendly neighborhood amateur radio licensee might have the equipment to test this radio and tell you how much juice it generates. I'm sure it's not much, but it might be several times what's legally permitted (again, depending on where you live). Please be nice to the radio spectrum -- it's something that everyone uses ever day, and if it gets abused, it will become harder and harder to use freely. Look at drone laws in Canada if you need a good analogy. Good work, kiddo! :)

Nice project. Now we have to build receiver for it. Also adding push button to transmitter would make it closer to Walkie Talkie :) I just wander if there are any regulations that would make using this kind of pirate radio illegal on FM frequencies?

it would be possible, you would have to convert the stereo output (left/right) from a headphone jack to mono (single line), connect the positive of the now single output to the positive of the microphone connection, and the outputs negative to the negative of the microphone connection. just dont turn up the device that its connected to up very loud, as it can and likely will cause distortion, if it is to quiet turn up the volume on the radio itself
