Nice one. Great to see home PJ's, I'm a Home Projectionist, brought my set up on a budget of just £320 and a lounge room of 27ft by 25ft. Had my setup for 3yrs, 120" electric screen, Optoma HD 230x PJ, Powered by an old style Sony Surround. All equipment is over 5yrs old, and you still get the WoW factor from friends. BluRay movies are over whelming. Great to see people buy PJ's instead of TV's, you get more bang for your buck as they say. And most PJs are easy to fix. Thanks for sharing the man cave.

I bought my first Hitachi projector in 2001 when home theatre projectors were in there infancy. Brightness and contrast ratios were low, but with the curtains closed it worked great when watching movies with my Pioneer Laser Disc player. Projectors today have a lot more technology in them and of course are a lot brighter, my next purchase will be a laser projector. They use lasers for the light source and are super bright, good for bright areas like living rooms etc. Whilst top end home theatre projectors are more expensive, they give an amazing picture with excellent contrast ratio and a much bigger screen than any TV. To help the picture appear brighter for smaller / older projectors, it's ideal to have the room as dark as possible. Either painting walls and the ceiling black (floor should be dark carpet) will allow the light to be absorbed. If you can put dark or black curtains around the walls it will also help with sound absorption (less echo). Thanks for the great video, very useful for beginners!

I am still using my Benq 720P projector from 2004! It gets almost daily use and I am on my third bulb. The picture is still excellent! I have taken it down and cleaned it a few times. Also the color wheel motor got noisy after about 10,000 hours or about 10 years. A very worthwhile investment.

Techfreshness, I give you props on this! I totally feel the style and creativity you had with your room. It definitively brings a mello, zin-like mood. The purplish blue lights by the screen, looks like a subwoofer you got there in the middle of them too. Even your choice of furniture! Amazing! I also like what you did with the projector itself, hanging it on the ceiling. I bet that was a great project...

Old video, however, all I can say is "Welcome to the Family". Stopped using projectors back in 2014. On my third one now after doing some exploring. Currently using an Epson 2040 1080p. Pretty freaking solid for $599. All you need now is a solid surround sound system with a black diamond screen from screen innovations.

Got the same setup around Christmas (BenQ ht2050 and 120" screen) and it's absolutely epic. Way better value than any TV, and the BenQ projector is an absolute beast, even great for gaming with the low input lag. Always run it in eco mode to extend the lamp life (6000 hours). Really great projector at a very reasonable price. Pro Tipp: don't try to save money on a cheap ceiling mount.

RS-232 is for control systems like Crestron Should have spent a few hundred more for a 3 Chip LCD projector which is brighter and gives you a much wider color gamut but that's just what I would have done. If I was you I would consider painting the ceiling matte black so you get less light bounce and plus it will probably make it look more like a home theater also friendly suggestion Vivid is bad for your projector because its to bright not to mention over saturated colors and unrealistic skin tones Cinema mode is best Either love seeing people build there home theaters cheers

nice thanks for the info, i actually didn't realize about the 3 chip lcd projectors, but you talking what 500 more, i was trying to hit that sub 1k price point. i had considered about that light bounce, thought it would be bother some directly overhead, but it really doesn't bother me especially not to the point of painting my ceiling black, i think that would f up my whole room vibe. but i will have to play with the modes though, thank you for the tip, you sound like you know your stuff!

@dlg5485
@dlg5485 7 жыл бұрын
I totally disagree with the LCD suggestion. DLP projectors are far superior in black levels and overall color dynamics, in my opinion. Personally, I'll never own another LCD projector because they tend to look washed out, with terrible blacks and drab colors, especially if there's any light in the room. I've a couple LCD units, but my current one is the slightly older BenQ W1070, which is similar in specs to this unit and it's also the least expensive one I've owned, while producing the best results. I'm extremely impressed with BenQ's line of DLP projectors. If I was going to go all out and build a reference theater, I'd go with a 3 chip DLP (similar to what commercial theaters use), but those cost a fortune.

I must say, one of the most important thing is the illumination. It is for me not confort to be in all dark place for everyday living room time. My idea is to aim the lights away from the projector wall. To use low intensity led lights focusing just your couch and the walls around the front view. My eyes itches when i play video games in dark places. There is a cinema layout for the best projector experience, you just need a building plan for a projector living room. other detail is that some projectors have loud noise, a simple wood installation in the bottom of the projector can fix that noise. Of course taking care for necessary ventilation.

I have a similar setup. Ceiling mounted projector in a lower level, i.e., another floor above. Based on my experience I'm very sceptical the that setup shown would yield a satisfactory result. Specifically, any motion of the framing to which the projector is attached will result in visible vibration of the image. To obtain a rigid mount I had to mount the projector to a plate attached by a single stalk mount as shown and then place wires with turnbuckles projecting up and out at all four corners of the plate and connecting to hooks in the framing . The fine position of the picture is obtained by adjusting the turnbuckles and the wires stiffened up the mounting such that motion of the ceiling, e.g., someone walking around on the floor above, no longer creates movement of the projected image. Also, the mounting, with the projector exposed is rather crude in the setup shown. My installation (also with a suspended acoustical tile ceiling) completely encloses the projector, including a glass port for the light beam. Intake and exhaust air is from and into the space above the ceiling. This makes the theater very quiet at low sound levels.
@techfreshness
@techfreshness 5 жыл бұрын
hey dav, yeah you are right, it does have some slight vibration. i just was lazy with installing it proper with bracing. the turnbuckles sounds like a good solution. do you have a link to what you used? i also don't disagree with the mouting being a little crude. although i dont' know how i could get it incased like you describe, woudln't the light beam have to shine down at such an angle? thanks a lot for the input
@davmar9923
@davmar9923 5 жыл бұрын
@@techfreshness I have frequently wished that there was someway to attach pictures to KZfaq comments for such purposes. The materials used were common, a piece of Masonite for the mounting plate and bailing wire and screen door turnbuckles for adjustments. Most projectors have an adjustment for altering the vertical projection angle. The angle required when the projector is suspended eight feet in the air isn't much different than when a projector is located on a table top and beams up to a wall. The enclosure I fabricated occupies the space of one ceiling tile and actually hangs from the lattice work that the tiles rest in, i.e. the projector is mounted to the framing but the enclosure hangs with the suspended ceiling. When I originally created the space I knew I was going to fabricate a home theater and made sure one row of tiles was centered on the space where the projection screen would be located. You can't adjust the beam from side to side independently of the projector body. On the other hand you could just sightly angle the projector and then adjust the "keystone" correction to compensate for the slight distortion of the frame. There are some photos of the setup on my Facebook page that you can view at (cut and paste the URL if the link is not active): facebook.com/1513915535565356/photos/a.1514863552137221/1732550293701878/?type=3&theater Note: The design and fabrication of the enclosure was fairly time consuming. The screen is 92" diagonal. If I live long enough I would anticipate that the projection setup would be replaced with some type of mega-ultra HD direct-view technology that is applied like thick wallpaper.

If you're ever looking to upgrade, I would highly recommend a 3-LCP Sony laser unit. you can get up to 5000 lumens for under 2k nowadays, which is comparably priced in comparison to similar brightness Lamp-Based units. Plus you get anywhere from 20-25,000 hours of life out of them without any loss of brightness in the process. The Sony VPL-PWZ10 is perfect for this & would pack a huge punch in a room like that for roughly 17-1800$. Great video by the way!

Lol! I was rewatching your video above, specifically toward the end where you are watching the racing at 8:19. I didn't notice the first time but you, or whomever is on the couch, was moving his head left, or right, in conjection with what the car was doing. Now thats what I call immersive.

I built an acoustically transparent screen with material I purchased from Dazian a company that supplies material and supplies to theaters and movie theaters, I wanted the speakers behind the screen which makes for a neater installation, I built a 120 inch screen for about 75 bucks.

If you want to have any sort of fun expedience gaming on a projector, you NEED to have an hdmi go direct from projector to game console. Then using an optical cable to get audio. Passing through a receiver creates a huge amount of lag

The RS-232 standard had been commonly used in computer serial ports. The standard defines the electrical characteristics and timing of signals, the meaning of signals, and the physical size and pinout of connectors. I was looking at getting a benq2050 but I ended up settling for the Optoma GT1080. Higher lumens, better contrast ratio, while still being a short throw and its 100$ cheaper. Looks like yours does better in the light though, idk how lol. Another option for a screen as well if you wanted to make your own would be Carls DYI blackout cloth. Made a 100in screen and it probably ran me 40$ (that includes the wood I had to get from Home Depot to make the frame. Good info though and nice setup.

I've have my Epson HD projector for about 2 years now and I'll NEVER go back to TV's lol I race on PC and play on about 100+ inch screen/wall. I made a huge mistake before buying a projector and bought an 82 inch 3D ready tv. It lasted a whole 6 months and something went on it and never could find a real person in the companies customer service dept, so now I have a $2000 huge paperweight (not happy) . Anyways I'm hoping to upgrade to a short-throw projector next year while I wait for the 4K projectors to drop a little in price. Congrats on your projector. I see this is an older video but great video none the less. I might even look into the projector you showed in your vid.

techfreshness I've blacked my room using black out curtians and graham brown disco black wallpaper helps my speakers and stands dissapear when lights are off.But even if lights are on the image is not washed out as the light dose not really reflect off the wallpaper onto the screen so colour is not affected.only thing I think is a black background would suite you screen better in daylight, less distracting to eye in daylight then with a white background in daylight. Looks very nice well done

my experience w/ screens of any size..youre gonna wanna go bigger..so if possible, get your wall prepped w/ projector paint, always the most impressive, immersive, & you literally can't go any larger than the size or your wall, until you move & get a bigger wall, so no regrets on screen size. especially w/ the short-throw LED projectors today, the contrast & detail so good, literally looks like a huge tv wall, nothing washed out..just mind the sunlight as always, all good.

Good video and nice set up. I'm getting closer to getting a projector but mine will be in the back room of my house, I do not have a room I can dedicate to it for now. I will be going for the sneaky theater look where the screen rolls up into the ceiling when not in use. I too will be going with economic sound set up until a later date.

Great Video! Thanks for the upload. When I built my theater I had to do a lot of research to answer all the questions I had. You pretty much covered everything I learned. Perfect guide for anyone wanting their own home theater setup. My advise would be that projectors do have some convinces that televisions don't though T.V.s are far out accelerating the picture quality and technology of projectors. I don't mind the softer image a projector provides. To really make any home theater I would highly recommend investing in a respectable sound system to make the experience.

It actually does matter what distance you set your projector compared to the screen size. If you set it closer, the image gets brighter and will help as the bulb dims over time, especially on a large screen.
