I own a Honda for almost 10 years now and thought about getting an EGO. I had my neighbor test his EGO on my 1/2 acre yard side by side with my Honda. I noticed the clipping and mulching was much better on the Honda. Also my neighbor could not finish cutting the grass due to dead battery.

Excellent job on comparing these mowers. Well done and most of all much appreciated. I am in the market for a new mower and now that I am older I am looking for ease of use, less maintenance, etc. I currently own a Troy built mower and have had it for 27 years. Best cut ever and I have many neighbours whose lawn did not look as nice as mine once cut. However, I just can’t maneuver it anymore. Plus it is needing more and more maintenance. So I think I am going to make to move to the battery machine. Thank you so much for this video.👍

A suggestion for future noise level comparisons: check it where and how it will be normally used. In other words, check the decibels of the mower WHILE mowing (not stationary) and check it from the operator position (not front of mower) somewhere near head (ear) height. This will give you the best readings for operator noise level. If you want to compare neighbor noise level (how your mowing impacts your neighbors), then a different (distance) test should be devised.

The noise on equipment is really tricky to get. The decibel meter doesn't do that good of a job for a variety of reasons. I really think a subjective test done with 4 - 6 people sitting on neighboring decks/ going into their house and seeing how much they hear inside and just ask 'which one is quieter' and 'which one annoys you less' and 'would this irritate you at 8 PM' (or whatever time the whiniest of your neighbors start to jump up and down.)

By the time I need to replace the battery (5-year warranty on the 10Ah), it won’t hurt a bit. In fact, I’ll even have enough for a new lawnmower, should EGO have a worthy upgrade by then. Yo must also consider the fact that with electric mover you don't have to pay for gas, oil and maintenance any more. Calculate that expense for next 10 year, and battery powered mover is cheaper (litium batteries last more than 20 year, 10 year old Tesla still have 90 % of their original capacity).

Had my Honda about 8 years. Starts on first try. I keep it outside under the stairs of the deck so it is exposed to rain and snow. Never changed the oil or sharpened the blade. I think I changed the blade once. Replaced the pull mechanism once. Use it weekly, sometime half the yard twice a week. Gas is a little bit of a pain, but I don’t have to fiddle with charging. My only regret is not getting the Nexite deck where grass sticks less. I’ll give the mower away for free when I upgrade to the new Honda. For basically abusing the Hell out of my mower because I hate anything to do with cutting grass, I would still choose the Honda.
@Augownage

You should change the oil for sure. If you don't like changing oil, get some really high end synthetic oil. I sue Amsoil Signature in all my engines, but Royal Purple, Mobil 1, etc all will work well. Your 8 year old oil is probably heavily diluted with gasoline and moisture and providing minimal protection.

I bought a self propelled Honda mower similar to yours probably 10 years ago. I have found it to be 'bulletproof', by far the best mower I've ever owned. I change the oil annually, and put in a new plug and air filter maybe every two years. I have two sets of blades and change them out maybe twice a year. I thought about getting an electric mower, but the Honda just keeps going and going! I live in the south, and have a zoysia lawn. I have heard that electric mowers are better with the taller type fescues rather than the turf type grasses.

Seems the EGO stripes the lawn more with mulch than the Honda, which distributes it more over the full path. The mower I'm replacing stripes the mulch as well. Not a fan of the striping, as that means you have to overlap your passes back and forth to pick up the previous mulch, which is more mowing becuase you're making narrower passes than you could be.

I own this specific Honda mower and use it commercially for years now. The power is phenomenal. Versamow system is unique and ground braking. The plastic deck (Honda calls the material Xenoy) makes it rust and dent free while simultaniously very light which makes the mower extremely maneuverable. Another great trait of the Xenoy is the fact that the grass doesn't stick to it as much as it does on a aluminum or steel deck... There are only two things that I would like to see improved. First is the height adjustment system which is annoying given the fact that you have to adjust every wheel individually. And the second thing is the lack of quality and sturdiness of the handle. After 2 years of intensive use the handle was busted and I had to weld the damn thing every few months....

Very good video. I bought an "open box" top of line consumer Honda mower in 1999. Last year, the self-propelled mechanism started to slip, and the plastic brackets holding the handles and throttle assembly broke, and the parts to fix them are no longer available. The engine still runs as well as it always has, but with my hilly yard, it's time for a new mower. To be honest, I am a hard sell on an electric mower based on the great experience I have had with my Honda. But, the fact that an electric will let me toss my gas cans and free me from regular maintenance on a gas engine (mine has run so well for so long because I change the oil, filter and spark plug regularly) is really making the purchase of a new mower a difficult one - but this video is definitely helping me make a decision.

Even though you're free of gas maintenance, going to an electric mower comes with its costs as well... Batteries aren't cheap and seem to fail more frequently than mowers. This means that you're likely to be put in a position where you need a new $150 battery to keep your $600 mower going - and if the mower fails after that, you'll need to buy a new $400-600 mower to justify the $150 that you recently invested in batteries

Being taller AND comfortable can be tricky. At first having the handle higher seems better. However, length of stride can be an issue if you are too close to the mower by angling the handle higher. Especially with the bag attached you can kick the mower. But if this causes you to lower the handle, your arms could get strained and tired more quickly. I'm 6'5 so with some grocery carts, strollers, etc I stub my toes or bash my ankles on what I'm pushing. The only way to check this would be in the store with the display model.

There's pros and cons to both I've owned the ego. It's light it folds up, no gas no maintenance required. The cons vs gas. less power, the batts die every 3-4 years, they're getting cheaper but not super cheap either. Other than that battery is so convenient and much quieter. if you have less than a 1/2 acre, then a batt mower is great. The power difference sometimes matters when you have ton of leaves on the lawn or branches, nothing chops them up and bags as well as the power of gas. I now have a toro 60v, I like the bag better than the ego.

I challenge you: go and look at 10 year old Tesla and people like Bjorn Nyland that measure the degradation. 10 years old Tesla STILL have 90 % of their original capacity. 3. EGO single height adjustment system allows for more play in the deck height. When applying self propel on mine, there is a significant deck height increase over the deck height when pushing. Also, lower RPM on the EGO vs. Honda. EGO wheel barrings are not water tight. Mine have rusted and the wheel fallen off on two occasions. I have both of these mowers in my lawn service trailer. The EGO is my alpha mower and the Honda is my second mower (For use on lawns where the mower might get damaged). Been using the Honda for years (been though about 13 of them) and 11 months into it, I am about to replace my first EGO. With both mowers, everything works until the self propel fails. Motor and deck outlast this feature on each. EGO being independent and Honda being belt driven, they fail differently, but that seems to be the weak point when I am the primary user.

Underrated comment! Single point height adjustments are convenient - no doubt - but allows for some degree of front-to-back flex and can lead to uneven cuts. @@SiXX5150 That was a consideration of mine when replacing the EGO mower. After watching reviews on the Milwaukee mower, I decided to give it a shot. Just thought I'd share: (LM2130SP, purchased Feb2021): No issues in 2021...in 2022 it simply cuts off while cutting. It appears to run for approx. 20 minutes then it shuts off and won't restart (Battery goes through 1 to 2 led indicator lights). But it will restart after some rest time: 15 minute rest, it will run for about 2 min. 45 minute rest, it will run for 10 minutes or so. Mind you I only took note of these types of times just once before taking it in. And I'm not cutting through overgrown grass here, I'm bagging very little clippings, probably even shorter than the 1/3 rule this time of year. The underdeck is clean, nothing there. Did this to me on 3 separate consecutive occasions this season (Mar/Apr 2022). It's not the battery, as I have swapped batteries and both work fine in the second piece of equipment (string trimmer). Also, nothing appears to be hot as for as I can tell and nothing out of the ordinary happens before or after, it just shuts off. I called EGO and they referred to me to their authorized warranty center (an hour away). I turned it in on 20 Apr and explained what it was doing to me. I called them today (27Apr) and they can't seem to replicate my issue. Which I was afraid of. The associate I spoke with said they went through several batteries and been going back and forth with EGO regarding my issue. But if they can't replicate what's happening with me not sure what else can be done. I guess, they are talking with EGO to see if any other customers are having similar issues this this lawnmower.

Thank you for this detailed comparison. I have a 10 yr old Honda HRX217 4 in 1. A great mower considering I have to mow 4+ hours each time. Yes, the maintenance is generally basic. For a battery operated, I would need one which includes two 10amp batteries so that one is fast charging and ready while I am using the other one. Battery warranties need to be 5 years minimum or else the cost of these as replacement is steep. Most battery operated appliances come with a low amperage 3 year warranty which is essentially useless. Mind you I have a battery operated weed trimmer, and a hedger and with two batteries I always have a back up and so far they’ve lasted 7 years.

If I get a larger mower, I can’t get around some of the tighter areas and would still require a smaller mower to manœuvre around. It’s also not cost effective. My Honda serves me well. The time also includes trimming all of the edges.

I know it’s nit-picky, but I love how the Ego bag lifts off…just picks straight up. I always hated how you have to tilt the bag forward on other models and you end up dumping out a good amount of clippings that you have to scoop up by hand. I just bought the $600 EGO for $270 yesterday…it was the floor model at Lowes. It only has the single blade, but I’m looking into seeing if I can make it a dual blade.

With the money I saved in the mower I upgraded the weed whacker and blower I was going to get and got the 16” weed whacker that has the auto line feed and the 765 CFM blower. Got all 3 for $898. Lowes gave me the 10% military discount on the lawnmower and a couple of other items I bought, but not the trimmer and blower. I guess they consider them “appliances”. Can’t complain though.

Sometimes if you are doing a high cut the gap between ground and mower skirt is too high to allow all grass to be sucked up into bag and some escapes the sides. Also if the bag mesh is getting blocked the vacuum under the mower cannot build up properly because the air being blown out the deck vent cannot escape quickly enough through the bag sides..

Quick question and a comment on this excellent comparison... The sound test on the Honda, was that with or without the blades engaged? My Honda is much louder with the blades engaged than when not engaged. Also, what blade sets were used on the Ego during the various tests? The three blade combinations delivered with that mower are long running set, high lift bagging set and a mulching set. Curious to see if the blade sets change the performance test to test. Great job, I enjoyed the video!

I replaced a HRX 217 Honda with the Ego a little over a month ago. Here are a few of my observations. For starters the Ego's blades get dull extremely fast. We've only mowed 5 times and they need to be sharpened badly. That means I will have to sharpen them several times a year. With the Honda I was good sharpening them once or twice a year. The Honda seems to do a better job mulching but that could also be that the blades stay sharp longer. The single adjustment lever is really nice on the Ego but I find the 3 setting to be a little too short and 4 to be a little too high. With the Honda you get more adjustments and I was able to mow at the height I liked. I used the Honda strictly as a mulcher. The bag was still brand new when I sold it. Even with the lever set all the way to mulch a lot of grass would still get through and fill up the area behind it. The self propel was easier to use with the Honda. I find myself not using it nearly as much on the Ego because it's so light and easy to push. I also like that I don't need the mower running to use it. For the most part I am happy I made the switch. Not dealing with gas or oil is really nice. Also I can easily pick the Ego up and put it out of the way standing on end. I love that. Now if Ego could make some better blades I'd be really happy.

I'm curious why it appears that you are engaging the blade on the Honda before pulling the starter cord? I always start my Honda HRX with the blade disengaged and then I engage the blade after it is started and warmed up. That is the instruction in the manual, at least for my model year Honda. It seems like you are adding unnecessary resistance by turning the blades while pulling the cord. Also, I noticed that you had to pull the cord more than once to start it by doing this even though the engine was warm.

In this review the EGO seems to have more suction power than the Honda on grass. This is a BIG surprise. The first thing I noticed when I sold my Honda and bought the EGO was the lack fo suction. That was four years ago, before EGO offered the dual blade system. Please do a follow up in November comparing the suction power of the EGO and Honda on fall leaves. I have an older EGO with one blade and it is just about useless on leaves. As to gas vs battery pro/con: When I bought my first EGO four years ago I did some quick math, used gas at $3/gallon, that I mow every 4-5 days, and found that over four years the cost of gas about equaled the cost to replace the 7.5Ah battery. Add in air filters and oil and the cost of gas/battery is about the same. Thank you.

My honda will destroy them with ease. But its loud, stinks, and i need to run to the gas station. Battery wise its not a big deal. I am the DIY person. I will pick the gasoline mower every time. Very easy to service and maintain. They will last for decades if you take care of them. My Honda pressure washer and mower are 25 years old. The Honda is designed to be serviced and repaired. That makes it more "green" as it is not a white good or throw away product. Will the battery still hold 100% charge in five years? What happens if the battery mower gets caught in a thunder shower when you go in for a glass of water and the electrical corrosion starts? Just like with electric cars, the technology is not good enough yet to best gasoline. Great video by the way, very nice job.

That plays a big factor in cost believe it or not.

I do disagree with spec sheet, page 2, where you showed run time claim and put unlimited with gas for the Honda. Gas run time is not unlimited. My last gas mower I used was my uncles and it was a high quality Husqvarna self-propelled mower. During a mow for his lawn, the gas would run out. I sometimes would be close to finishing but would have to stop and go to the shed and pour more gas in to finish it. With my Ego mower, the battery also usually dies before finishing my lawn and I can go to my shed and pick up an already charged back up battery and put it in the mower faster than the time it would take to add gas, and with no mess.

Bought a Honda gas mower something like 4-5 years ago based on their stellar reputation. Last year in the middle of mowing, it refused to roll backwards. Felt like the transmission was locking up. Did some research and found this a pretty common problem. Recommendation was to emory cloth or fine sandpaper the axle where the bushing is. Did that and used the mower without issue a couple of more times. Now this year, same issue happened. Was able to free it up by hand. Next time out, not so lucky and the axle transmission refuses to allow it to roll backwards. I am fed up and now I hear that Honda is leaving the (gas) mower business altogether. I went out and got an Ego. While it feels pretty cheap to me, much of that probably because it is so light, I figure I'll give them a good shot. I'm frankly beyond disappointed with the Honda though. Engine is wonderful, it mows well, but the axle transmission issues are just too much. Keeping my hopes up with the Ego.

I actually have both and used them commercially. They are very good in their on right! My crew is split, one loves the Ego and the other loves the Honda. In my opinion, the Ego wins. There is no gas or spark plugs to deal with, no extra cost maintenance while still giving a premium cut. The only reason one of my guys likes the Honda more is because of the battery. I use the 7.5 amp and at first would only get through half of the day. I now have replacement batteries with a turbo charger and make through the day with no problem, about 8 to ten jobs a day. After using both, I can honestly say, the Ego has some Power! I have the dual blade set up; by the way, my blades do not dull as fast as people are saying in the comments; and there have been a few jobs where the Honda stalled on tall grass and the Ego tore through it with no problem. I'd say the best takeaway from this is Electric has arrived. It has the the same performance as a gas machine at this point. Run time and battery longevity is still an issue, though the average residential consumer will get around 8 to 10 years out of these batteries. Still, if you know your way around small engines the gas machines will last much longer. Most people don't know a thing about small engines and this is where these E-tools come in.

The big win with electric mowers over electric cars is replaceable batteries. However, you have to be careful because if you buy a piece of battery powered equipment where they stop making the series the batteries get rare and expensive fast. I bought a Craftsman 60V trimmer and now the batteries are more than a whole new trimmer. When the battery dies, I'll likely just get an M18 bare trimmer off ebay for $100 since I have those batteries already. I have a super recycler mower that I bought in 2004 and it's still going. But I've thought I might replace it with electric when the time comes. I have even considered the Harbor Freight 80V series. But again, I'm worried about battery availability in the future since the biggest problem with battery powered equipment is the eventual death of the battery. I guess I'll see what is available when the times comes.

Many mowers use the same batteries as normal power tools like drill, grinders, blowers etc, and these mean you get full use out of batteries instead of having an expensive dedicated battery for just the mower. Need to know what a replacement battery for EGO costs

I have always used honda mowers, I bought this ego mower, it is nice but i will be surprised if it lasts longer than the battery. That said some things are better with the electric, when it is wet and I just have to mow the deck will get clogged, with the ego I can stop flip it on the side, clear the clog and be back cutting much faster than the Honda.

Electric mowers are only good on small (under 8000 sf) flat yards. I have the Makita XML09 a commercial model. It is a niche mower and allows me to offer all electric service, plus I have been on the Makita platform many years(have lots of batteries) and my XML09 is heavier then most electric mowers. On small flat postage stamp yards or when I have a small amount that cant be cut with my zero turn the Makita is great. I also own a Honda HRX217, YBravo GenII 25 and a Toro Timemaster. Without fail the gas mowers out perform the electric in morning dew grass, over grown yards, hilly terrain , my experience shows the Honda to be the best mulch and cut quality, YBravo(true commercial mower) best discharge cut and the Timemaster is the best all around mower(its a homeowner mower so one has to handle it carefully or the commercial work will tear it up). Home owners with over 10,000 sf of yard that are cutting once or twice a week Timemaster hands down if your willing to spend $1500. They will save you time, mine is a 223 B&S and 4 yrs old with an electric start, runs great and simple to service(oil change takes 10 minutes).

Extra/replacement EGO batteries run anywhere from $250 (4Ah) up to $600 (12Ah) and there are lots of reports that people are only getting about 4 years out of a battery and some even less. The battery used in this video costs $500.

Ego needs that mulch / bag solution and the Honda needs the height adjustment solution from Ego. The major cost long-term for the Honda is the gas and oil and whatever goes wrong with it carb wise or air filter, vs how much it costs to charge the battery and replace a battery after 5 or so years whatever it would be, probably 10.

Some thoughts on these tests. This is an older gas mower. The gas mower is automatically choked until it warms up which effect the RPM/tip speed of the blade. You should use a tach to measure the RPM of the engine. For a 21” blade you should be around 3450 RPM for a blade speed of 19000 fpm or 3635 RPM for 20000 fpm blade speed. I believe 19000 fpm is the new ANSI standard. Would be interesting to know what the Ego motor RPM is at max and what the Honda is running at currently before warm up.

@@Jeo-What the thing is, we don’t know the RPM speed of the older Honda motor on this mower. I’m sure torque matters to some degree but the actual blade tip speed needs to be at optimum to get the quality of cut designed into the mower and this has to be measured to make the comparison fair for both mowers.
@chriswindham9868
@chriswindham9868 3 жыл бұрын
@George W I’m not disputing the specs of the motor, I’m saying we don’t know know the actual running speed of this particular unit during this comparison. I say this with some experience since I have an older gasoline motor mower that wasn’t cutting very well. The spring that is used to control the engine throttle had aged and was giving the motor subpar engine speed. After replacing this spring and adjusting to optimum RPM (purchased a tach for small engines) it now performs much better.
