Oh don't get me started on YT's copyright claims. One of my friends spent well over a month fighting a bogus claim on the music he used for his intro/outro that he wrote, composed, and preformed himself.

Oof i feel this. Used my own music in a video and was claimed by a third party even though I whitelisted the video with my distributor. Claimed by some random person and never got solved so I just reuploaded and it was fine

Yeah, I don't like how YT's copyright claim system favours the sending end rather than the receiving end, without any kind of middleman option (I can't properly describe what I'm talking about here) and I don't think they will ever fix it.

@@kbhasi I know what you're talking about. In the consumer industries they call it an Ombudsman. I guess with youtube you just have to take them to court. What really fucks *me* off though is the absolute mockery they're making of the system. 2 or 3 (or up to 10, really) seconds of a song playing in a youtube video is NOT piracy, it's a fucking ADVERTISEMENT you convex spoons!!! Go leech off twatheads who upload entire songs! The only reason he puts titles in the description is because people ask for them with the intention of acquiring the full track (legitimately or otherwise!). They should be paying HIM for that. This is all rather reminiscent of Nintendo filing DMCA strikes against gamers.

Ray Parker Jr. Better known as the grand DADDY of McDonalds burger flippers these days. What a legacy, from "I'm afraid of no ghost" to "how d'you like your coffee, dark roast?" He was hoping that they would use his questionable hit for the second Ghostbusters movie, to take care of his retirement fund. But like many failed pop stars, they cannot see when their time is up. I bet he is still touring dive bars as a support act to this day, to fill in when the headline act stop to take a piss.

I bought a fully automatic Denon turntable and Q speakers off eBay because I was inspired by Techmoan. Sure, the models aren't the same and the amplifier has wonky knobs, but it works for me.

Look for a Bang & Olufsen Beogram. Most have that feature. I personally use the RX2 and 9000. Love them both. Very high quality, but also somewhat delicate. They use a weight system to determine record size. Though this Technichs looks very lovely as well.

The little 1960s turntable (Stella, model unknown) I inherited from an older brother who had left home for university when I was at primary school had a "single adaptor". It wasn't entirely clear what it was for, until one day I borrowed some singles from a friend up the road and saw one had a tabbed ring cut into it the same size as the adaptor (so the centre could be punched out to make a huge hole). In New Zealand, singles mostly all had the same centre hole arrangement as LPs. My high school physics teacher picked up one of those Technics linear turntables in the mid-1980's and it was very impressive (and expensive) at the time. I ended up with a used direct drive pivot tone-arm Technics mid-range model that was in near new condition by an amazing stroke of luck for a fraction of the price. Good speakers were only available at high prices, so in the 1980's it was not uncommon for enthusiasts to select and buy drivers and crossovers, design and build their own cabinets and get better results than the average affordable speakers of the day. This applied to amplifiers as well. I built my own amplifier at high school and my own speakers a few years later. This was more cost effective for mid-fi gear because import duty was so high back then that one had to be somewhat wealthy to afford mid-fi, let alone hi-fi. Ampifiers and speakers were something you could build yourself, saving money for components that could not be home made (turntables, cassette decks).

I have a cassette deck - a late-model Pioneer dual deck. Not high-end by any means, but it does still sound pretty good. I don't use it a lot, but every so often I enjoy the tactility of dropping a tape into the machine and hitting PLAY. I have a similar argument regarding my 8-Track. Don't judge me.... lol

I love my hifi/home theater setup. It gives me genuine joy to sit on the couch after a long day at work and watch TV or movies, or listen to music, in a variety of formats. It's fun to pick through milk crates at swap meets to see what I can find, or to slowly browse the racks at Reckless Records or Salvation Army. And, even better, I can share the experiences with friends. So why would you want X in this day and age? Because life should have joy in it.

I would suspect that: 1. The weight comes mostly from oversized, yet relatively weak, ceramic magnets on the "woofer". These may *look* impressive, but they're crap. 2. No port or relief of any kind -- it's an acoustic suspension design (essentially, a sealed box) except for whatever air leaks around the fixtures on the back (or the crappy non-grommeted wire in the back of the passive speaker) which, in such designs, is a *very* bad thing. 3. No damping material (e.g., fiberglass insulation) of any kind. This is pretty much required to eliminate resonance peaks based on the dimensions of the box and the free-air resonance (and suspension compliance) of the woofer. 4. The "tweeter" is not sealed at the back, so it's getting beat to death by the woofer. In really crappy designs, you will actually hear the tweeter cone rattling or crackling at any significant volume level. In the worst case, this can actually rupture the tweeter cone. 5. Ridiculously thin walls, hence the horrible "hollow" sound when you tap on them. I would not be at all surprised to learn that at least one, if not all, of the above are true, which is why they sound so awful. :)

A lot of those people just wanna show off their expensive gear, but have SHIT hearing. Depending on your system, wires DO make a difference, both signal and speakers, but with modern more efficient speakers and digital amps, it doesn`t matter as much as it used to. Still I have definitely heard bad sound from good speakers, helped clean it up and see a happy music lover smiling in his lazyboy. It`s just that it all depends on what you have ;) People who run 200W towers through a 1mm cable and have 1500 dollar amps and feed them through a 2 dollar aux should be hung in public tbh.. But hey, if you have bad hearing, you won`t ever know, so what the hell :p

Back in the 1980s, I bought a SL-7. The big point for me at the time was it would run on 12 volt as well as A.C. 120 (yes in the States). I still have the same unit and yes it still works great these last (just under) 40 years. Yes it also had clamp built into the lid when closed would hold your vinal in place. I use to impress my friends picking up my turntable while playing their music, and holding the unit upside down. Was fun to see their faces when I did that. For those who want to know, at the time it was $500 US, but mine was open box demo sale for $300.

You can't go wrong with a Technics turntable from the early 80s- regardless of model. I have an SL-L2 and an SL-D3 that both give great service and sound.

I have the Technics SL 5. Same as this but without the track skip functions. A cheap upgrade is to get a JICO stylus (SAS, or shibata shape). The combination of this and the original Technics cartridge (usually branded p22, or p24 etc - they are all the same) is an unbelievable sound quality. It's nice to think that a Japanese company like JiCO know how good this Technics cartridge is, and although the Technics cartridges no longer made this upgrade that offer is second to none. The quietest surface noise I've ever heard from a record. Being a linear tracking arm inner groove distortion to me it is undetectable.

I've had an SL-10 and then got the chance to upgrade it to the SL-15 - fantastic machine. These Technics turntables are, as you say, very well worth considering.

Those are proper retro speakers - I remember junk like that from the 80s where you'd get speaker cabinets made out of compressed cardboard and cables that connected to the hifi with RCA jacks. Proper old school garbage!

@Gari Deb I had a pair of basic line Technics "Thrusters" (SB 180) speakers from the late 1970s, and they came with the SE 1160 AM/FM STEREO CASSETTE, PHONO combo unit, and they were particle board enclosures but they sounded excellent for the price back then. I payed 129.95 for everything in 1978.

The Technics SL-6 is the turntable I used to have in college (although mine was black). There was another advantage to those models: it's impossible to scratch your records (I'd qualify that with a "nearly" if I could even recall one instance of it happening) while playing the record -- ie, there was no way to make the tone arm jump or skip. That was really great in a dorm situation where you weren't always in control of what other people were doing. Also, I believe you do need to leave a small gap between the back of the turntable and the wall - not much: 0.25 to 0.5 inches, just because of the way the cover is hinged. Neat catch on the record sync feature. I had totally forgotten about that -- I didn't have a tape deck that was compatible with that system so I never had a chance to use it. Last comments: you alluded to problems with certain types of records... There were a few others that caused problems: like irregularly shaped records... I used to have quite a collection of special records, like the Police's "Badge" record (i.ebayimg.com/images/g/u2AAAOSwJ8BcqSxq/s-l1600.jpg) that wouldn't scan...and several others. Also, I found that the track scanner was unreliable when the gap between tracks was too small...and at that time many records didn't leave much space between tracks. I ended up not using the track scanner all that much.

I have the Technics SLQL-1 linear tracking turntable. Bought it in 1981 at the Navy Exchange in Keflavik, Iceland. Still works great!

I've got a really nice Technics SL-6 turntable that I found at a thrift shop in Southern California. It was extremely cheap as it didn't come with a power cord and they couldn't test it. The correct power cord was a bit smaller than a standard power cord so I "resized" a spare cord I had until it fit correctly. I was very pleasantly surprised how well this turntable played and worked. Thanks so much for confirming what I thought I knew about my Technics SL-6.

I still have this exact same turntable. I found it sitting on the top of a skip that was filled with other junk so I thought I'd grab it and see if it worked, and it did, though the linear tracking arm was prone to sticking, which was presumably why it was thrown out. That was back in 1995 iirc. However, a bit of lubrication later and it worked absolutely fine and remains so to this day :) This is a really great turntable for anyone who is more interested in listening to music rather than comparing spec sheets

As usual an excellent video, I used you Christmas Hi-Fi videos to help me source my system though I went for a less complex sound system with the Toshiba SL-10 and Aiwa SX-NAVH1000 Stereo Speakers. I find it to be a capable system and very pleasing to my old deaf ears. Thanks again and keep up the good work.

As an audiophile with a pretty good HiFi setup, that Cassiver or whatever it’s called is very cool! I’m seriously interested in it because it would reduce the amount of shelf space needed, so I can have other HiFi components on my shelves instead.

I would use that record player along with that Technics cassiever amp. I have the record player like that one, but I didn't know about the cassiever though. I have the Technics amplifier to go with the record player but I would prefer the cassiever! I got the technics separate's from the dump. It all worked, I got a new stylus for the record player cleaned the tape heads on the tape deck. The speakers which weren't that big were surprisingly loud. I could have it at 2 and a half on the volume and that was loud enough! Some hi fi's you had to have at 5 to get the same loudness!

Grew up with this record player and always loved it. Still have it and would love to get it cleaned up. Always had trouble playing Elvis's Moody Blue, but would work fine with a black record underneath.

Nice channel you have, I enjoy your videos! it takes me back to my youth in the 70/80. Back in the eighties I had a Technics with linear tracking too, an SL 10. It had a clamp that pressed the record firmly on to the turntable and it had also two holes on the bottom. So you could hang it up on the wall to play it vertically and I once tried to play a record while it was laying upside down and it kept on playing!

The solution to the track listing, is a pinned comment with the same Info, since most claimant's dont bother with comments, only descriptions, as those can be searchable, but comment's are more difficult.

Thank you for another great documentary.My father as one of these Technics Tuntables, which he brought back in 1980, with a moving coil cartridge and a built in phono preamplifier ; he payed around £ 1k from Sevenoaks Hifi in Tunbridge wells. It only broken down once, and its still working.

iv paused this at the intro, as a technician for thorn who moved then to matsushita and then bang and olufsen i can predict one thing already, matshitas turntables are legends, im not saying that as a soft lad soy boy led by trends or people who are just obsessive about the sl1200 and 1210 etc, im saying that at an amp engineer who got a whole yrs wages in a month for finding a more stable output stage!!! and their platter stability is always stunning (very few turntable manufacturers to this day still cant match on a wow and flutter meter :) enjoy enjoy :)

I have an SL-Q6 that I purchased new back in the early to mid 80's and still use it as my main turntable. Only maintenance done was a cleaning and new belt and a couple of styli. Still going strong.

I had one of these SL-6 LT's, fantastic little machine! I did end up swapping it out for an SLJ-300R, yes its lighter build but it does have quartz lock, and the sensors are more accurate. Mine came from the UK too, thanks Ebay!

I always wondered why phonographs did not have internal preamps like EVERY OTHER COMPONENT EVER MADE. Tape decks, CD, even home 8-tracks had built in preamps. Also relying on an external component’s quality and specs (preamp) to make your product work means you run the risk of people thinking your phonograph is garbage when in fact it is due to a cheap preamp.

but it also makes the product itself cheaper to produce and gives people a sense of choice - there seem to be night and day differences when it comes to phono preamps - and personal taste may play a big role here too. Also, back when these turntables were fresh on the market, more hifi amps would have come with a built in phono stage than without.

I think the point he's making is why did this particular component end up de facto passive? Tape decks require a preamp to amplify the low-level electromagnetic signal from the head. But they're always integrated. Functionally, tape and record players are very similar. Yet one is always line level, and the other is usually very low level.

Probably down to the cost of supplying a pre-amp which would need to be switchable between cartridge types, so the makers left it out and it was up to the buyer to decide what he/she wanted. All-in-one types came pre-configured, of course.

That casseiver is actually amazing! I regularly make mixtapes from vinyl. I have a portable cassette player at work and a Walkman in the car which I plug in the aux. I don't really understand why people can't get down with cassettes. If properly dubbed they can sound quite nice. Certainly not the best audio source but are extremely durable and versatile. Besides I kinda dig the grimy sound and tape compression.

Thank you very much for this great video. I enjoy music very much. I like quality audio but am not an “audiophool”. I own and use the Technics SL-5 linear tracking turntable. Similar model to yours but without the direct track access. My turntable is from 1982 and still works very well. I hope you enjoy your new turntable. To those out there who were not aware of these linear tracking turntables, I say go for it. They use what is known as a P mount cartridge so aftermarket cartridges and stylus can be found from inexpensive up to crazy prices. Very nice turntable.

I have the Technics SL-7 turntable, and still enjoy it occasionally. One thing that I used to do was to show people that you can stand the record player on end _(or on side)_ while the record is playing... something that none of my friends could do with their turntable. ;) *_Keep up the great work buddy!_*

Ohh cool! I've grown up with my dad having the SL3 and the rest of a matching Technics stereo set. I always thought it was super handy and an easy way of playing records. He's actually still using the turntable, just with a different amplifier and with my ears still sounds good.

I got a turntable (can't remember the make or model number) for my 18th b/day and was disappointed to discover I had to have a pre-amp for it before I could play anything on it... Off to Tandy I went... purchased a pre amp, but I put it in the wrong way round, it still worked though... lol

Great review as ever, Mat! One common problem to watch out for with linear trackers, though, is dried-out oil on the worm drive which moves the stylus across the record. If the oil has dried out, the arm will stick and skip. Many moons ago I picked up an SL-6 for £7.95 from a second-hand shop, but it took years to track down a service manual to find out how to get at the worm drive!

That linear Technics record player looks like a miniature version of my Technics SL-DL5 :) The DL5 is just lacking the program functionality and determines the record size/speed mechanically (with microswitches) instead of optically. Got it from my stepdad after it spent the past 20 years in the basement. Worked first try, but started skipping/hesitating to move the arm. Replaced the one belt this thing has (for the arm, was rock hard) and it runs perfectly now, just waiting on a new stylus (uses the same ones as in this video, coincidentally)

I feel very sorry for you buying those terrible auna speakers... I went through this too when I built my first own hifi system. In fact it was exactly like you suggested at the end of the video; I got that amp with some cheap speakers, which happened to be aunas. I paid 110€ and they sound absolutely awful... I nearly bought them bundled with an auna tube preamp... Everybody, PLEASE, stay away from auna. It is absolutely not worth it.

Bottom line, do your research, especially if it's on Amazon. Products which don't appear elsewhere or in high street stores should immediately arouse suspicion (comments like yours help). And if it's at this kind of price, you're better off buying a reputable brand second-hand.

The first video of yours that I ever saw was the one with the Sony desktop "portable" system (FH-7 MkII) As I watched that video, you also showed a picture of the MkIII, which was the system I had, until the amp and one speaker were destroyed by a power surge. I had that system for almost 25 years. That was when I decided to subscribe to your channel. Today, I check to see what cool goodies you have, and --- THAT'S OUR TURNTABLE! Well...almost. Ours is the SL-5. My wife bought it new in the early 80's (long before I knew her) and it is still going strong. The sound is quite good, especially after replacing the cartridge. Thank you for making these videos. Finding out the history and then seeing/hearing the result of your testing is captivating. As others have mentioned, you could probably do a video about paint drying, and people would watch without even questioning why they are watching. Cheers from Canada!

Another great video. I agree with you about the jacket-sized Technics linear trackers. In fact, I like linear trackers in general. A slightly maligned player, mainly for their complexity. However, I've found that with some basic maintenance (generally after 30 or so years without) they keep working, sound good and are very convenient to use. Keep up the good work.

I loved my first Technics SL turntable so much that I upgraded to a quartz drive instead of replacing the belt when it wore out. One limitation is playing warped records. They tend to rub against the lid and cause a noticeable slow down every rotation. I get around this by removing the rubber mat and placing the record directly on the metal turntable. Glad to see such a glowing review!

I uploaded a batch of old TV commercials. Gorillaz claimed ownership of an infamous (in the United States) 1989 PSA with a closeup of a frying egg that said "This is your brain on drugs". If I recall correctly, Gorillaz did not exist in 1989. I disputed the claim. The matter is ongoing.

I noticed 'fair use' no longer exists on youtube companies just go around claiming everything now, in fact I heard that they have a prediction algorithm that even knows if you were considering using a music or video clip in your video but didn't so it makes a content claim as a warning shot not to even think about it. 😲

They were almost amazing. Almost because for the want of a little more effort and investment they could have produced a world beater.... They should have made an up market model. (edit..looks like they did) But as it was Philips they went for mass market - It has been done since, there are active speakers with a bass feedback mechanism. The patents will have lapsed too. Edit..I just had a look/search and my memory is a bit suspect..I forgot about the bigger models. Would love to try them.

Kudos for highlighting this turntable. The SL line of compact parallel trackers from Technics were excellent. I have an SL7 and it is a superb sounding little TT. To improve the sound I recommend an Audio Technica AT85EP P mount cartridge which will significantly elevate the sound quality. They are very easy to fit and are a great upgrade.
