Hipac is the pre-recorded tape format that history forgot, so it's time to fix that.
Previous videos on related formats;
1) The Playtape • Retro Tech - The PlayTape
2) The Mail Call • Voice Mail - 1967 Styl...
Also - check out my playlist full of unusual and forgotten tech:
• Retro Tech
The only other video I’ve found on KZfaq featuring a Hipac player - can be viewed here: • PIONEER HIPAC ハイパックGP-505
FAQs etc.
Firstly - a few Japanese speakers have confirmed my pronunciation of Hipac is correct...so that’s good news.
Q) What's that clock/youtube counter on the shelf
A) This • Review: LaMetric Time ...
More info about the machine and the purpose of the case....
It seems unlikely it would be a salesman's sample (as has been suggested by quite a few) as there would be little need for a 12V power connector or even a model number for something the public couldn't buy. Additionally - there's that chap on youtube (linked above) with a different model - you'd only need one design of this case for demo purposes.
Now as far as the aerial...you'll see some leaf spring connectors on the left of the inside of the machine at one point when it's open - it seems very likely that these are there to connect to contacts on a special radio cartridge that could be inserted in the machine to provide it with radio reception capabilities. Personal stereos of the 80s re-used this idea, with a number of machines coming with radio cassette that you put in the machine when you wanted to listen to the radio. - Here's an example of a similar idea for the 8-track swling.com/blog/2017/06/myste...
Q) Could the screw that's holding the player in place just have been used for transportation - like when you buy a washing machine, record player etc.
A) I think that's unlikely, I've never found a transportation screw in any device that required disassembly of the unit to remove - they are usually on the bottom and can be removed and reinserted easily. Again I think this was screwed in - so that the deck and holder could be sold as one complete unit in order to sell off the unsold Hipac player stocks (probably very cheaply).
Q) Where did you get the belts?
A) Here ebay.to/2k8jEx9
Q) What's the music playing that starts at 06:54
A) Étude Op. 10, No. 3 (Chopin)

There’s a bit more information about this in the video description text box. If you are viewing on a smartphone or tablet app click the downward pointing triangle to the right of the title below the video. If you are viewing on the web click on the words “show more’.

I love how any used electronics you get from Japan seems to be in better condition than when it was first manufactured. They always seem to treat everything so nice and save practically any little scrap of literature that came when it was bought. It's pretty awesome how much they seem to respect everything they buy.

It looks like it was a salesman's portable demonstration unit.

Agh, those bloody puppets always get me. Cracked up at "Where'd you hide the body, then?" and "These aren't my trousers!"

Imagine if this was the first Sony Walkman of it's kind with some more R&D. It would have blew the cassette away even though you could rewind a cassette. the simplicity of the mechanism would have been cheaper to make and much more reliable making it cheaper than the rest of the competition. The tracks in the middle of the popular songs would have been more appreciated over time too since it would force you to listen to them. An album does grow on you and time to appreciate the other tracks unless its complete garbage.

I can't believe I just randomly found a cassette format that hasn't been on Techmoan before! Steno-Cassette from Grundig.

Peak geek has been reached. A 1970s tape format that failed in Japan and sunk almost without trace.

I really appreciate you ramming both cartdriges in the opposite players and risking probably expensive and rare formats to satisfy my itch.

there used to be a law (not sure which countries, probably several) that meant all in-car radios would require a separate license, making them more expensive and prohibitive to install. Manufacturers got around this by making the in-car radios and casette players 'removable'. Hence the pull-out handle and the runners. The reasoning being (and apparently legally sufficient) was that any radio/casette license that the owner of the car had would apply to it already as their own personal machine. The fact that you could dock it into a car was just a handy extra. this way, there was no need to pay an extra license. so there you go, music companies and governments screwing people over for extra royalties has been a thing for decades.
