Technics stated they made the GR for DJs too, but people are trippin because of the price, you have to pay for Made in Japan quality. I think the mk7 is not worth the money, only the GR is worth . This thing about being or not being made for Djs is nonsense, if you have the money to get the sl 1200 GAE or the new sl 1210 GAE to DJ, then you can DJ on them, there are rich DJs who play on LTD gold ones, the GAE, G, GR have same DJ functions and more. IF the new digital pitch seems "complicated" to DJ for anyone, then for sure they wont mix better with the mk2, mk3d or mk5 either....let alone with the first one to use a digital pitch : m5g/mk5g . You can see lots of big DJ events rocking the m5g with digital pitch.

Not all deejays had mark ii alone. I am 60, since ‘85 I have had a mark i and when the darker version came along, I invested in one as well. In 2022 they are still looking and sounding pretty in my gaff. The preamps have died, the mixer died and the Realistic equalizer from Tandy’s as well. All well made solid state Intergrated gear back in the day. Even my Mission 707 speakers had their subwoofer cones updated due too wear and tear! But my prized 1200s have outlasted everything else! I only miss the Stanton elliptical cartridges and stylus as that company stopped making them to concentrate on digital gear. At my age, I still play out and it’s the millenniums who can’t get over why I lug vinyl around to play… Music is a feeling that you can only experience if you do it right. Bob was right when he said if when the music hits you, you feel no pain…

Remember though, increasingly ‘serviced’ MK2s are Frankensteins. Pitch slider goes? It’ll be a third party part, probably drawn from Super OEMs.

Great review man. I have two 1200s a mark i and a mark ii. I have played on the mark 7 and we as the previously released one and to me, at 60 years old, and still jamming vinyl using 7’’ singles as well as old really thinly recorded and badly manufactured vinyl records and I have even lifted up the decks whilst the turntable is spinning and have had absolutely no issues with any of them skidding or slipping. The secret is in the tone arm being set up correctly and with the right cartridge with the stylus being precise. Investing in the right gear makes a difference I have found. If I had had more hindsight like yourself, I too would have invested in a collection of these SL models.

I wouldn't use the GR for mixing. The pitch is awful for beatmixing. (I have not owned a GR but did spend 4 or 5 hours on a pair) &, while I did like the build quality. The digitally controlled pitch was not for me. I found the old faithful 1200mk3d analog pitch to be a bit more accurate with mixing, I didn't like the MK7, Had a pair both with the dead range between 6 and 8%. Which was a deal breaker. But, I have also tried some mk7s more recently where the issue was fixed. But either way, I still do not like the look of mk7. Not elegant at all. Too beefy.

@TimeofourlivesAu
@TimeofourlivesAu 5 жыл бұрын
Good pickup from the video mix. That minor adjustment was more a fine-tune after releasing the record a fraction of a second late. Being a digital pitch fader on the GR, the movements within the +/-8 pitch are more accurate. In the past, I've mixed on MK2s where moving the pitch fader +3 would only make an adjustment of roughly +1 to the record. When mixing in the +/-16 range, this requires more precise movements for a seamless mix.
@9P38lightning
@9P38lightning 4 жыл бұрын
If you move +2 and it doesn't move +2, I'd suggest your Mk2 needs a service and calibration... Digital pitch faders come with their own issues... Analogue is supposed to be more accurate... I've just watched a review and the MK7 fader is now comparable with that of an analogue... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ZsekbLqdrduumnk.html

@9P38lightning From personal experience, I find analogue pitch is by far more reliable (it holds it's speed continuously) and it is very accurate then the digital pitch control which does not have the finer increments as the analogue it is either too fast or too slow even at a hairs breadth movement of the pitch. Did a test when I got my digital decks with two copies of the same record and I just could not for the life of me sync them spot on they drifted fairly quickly which was very unusual.

From what I've read and the specs available, the new MK7 features are similar to the GR (pitch range; detachable power/RCA/ground cables; break & torque adjustments). The build quality on the GR looks to be better than the MK7 but the MK7 may have a couple of extra 'DJ' features such as reverse platter and interchangeable tracking/strobe lights

@manukkee
@manukkee 4 жыл бұрын
@@michaelc1818 I understand the digital pitch thing, i also did not like mixing on the m5g, they are great turntables and the 8/16 pitch is great for faster records but u need to ride the pitch more. But having owned mk2 for a very long time, when i got my first mk3d i immediately sold my mint mk2 pair . TO me the combination of no click, smoother pitch slider, better gold plated cables, recessed on/off button is a much better combination than what the mk2 offers, then the mk5 has LED lights, antiskating to 6, and even more precisely calibrated pitch than the mk3d. If you look at the mk5 analog pitch : when you set the pitch to 0, 3.3, 6 and -3.3, those dots are spot on still at exact values, while on the mk2 even if the deck was brand new the dots were not still at those values, you had to set to pitch to 3.7 or 6.5 for those dots to be still. SO the click thing does not really matter if the deck is MINT and factory calibrated, the newer analog pitch models like m3d/mk3d and mk5 will beat the mk2 on small details that count. I always saw mk2 decks with pitch problems around the click, but so far never encountered m3d/mk3d or mk5 with that double zero, probably because mk2 was more used, but that click could also play a role in premature aging of the pitch and possibly a less cycles count for the mk2. Its possible that the mk2 is easier to calibrate because of the click, but a newbie will still cannot calibrate the mk2 pitch properly, so you need an experienced guy that could calibrate mk2, mk3d or mk5 anyway, so i don't think that the click is worth just for "ease of calibration" since you will not be able to calibrate it yourself anyway . Mk2 was always more popular because it was the cheapest, its great , but if you have 3 mint pairs of mk2 vs mk3d vs mk5, im having a hard time to believe people will chose the mk2.
@manukkee
@manukkee 4 жыл бұрын
@@michaelc1818 The gold plugs matter after a few years, when corrosion will come into place and your MK2 will lose contact with the mixer (this happened with my mint brand new mk2 after a few years), so you will have to touch the cables from time to time when one channel drops, this things do not happen with the gold plated cables, so its not about sound quality, but about reliability. Imagine to make a perfect set to record, then on the last track one channel goes off. The pitch on the mk2 is not more accurate, it just has a click, if you like the click then OK, but that doesn't mean its superior, most people hate the click, including me. So for you it is superior, but the mk2 lacks on : cables, on/of switch can be broken because it is exposed, light gets burned in time, no support for cartridge. Also the pitch control on mk3d and mk5 is MUCH smoother and butter like compared to the mk2 which is more scratchy/sticky. Maybe the new pitch controls made for Technics-service UK specs are smoother , i also bought 2 for my mk3d/mk5 decks , but the stock mk2 pitch is not smooth. Im talking about turntables that are in perfect conditions here and from owning them all . People think mk2 is THE BEST, because its the cheapest and most used, i sold some mk3d to few mk2 guys and they were all shocked how much smoother the pitch control is. Im not here to brag or convince people which is better, but the sl 1200 mk3d was made ONLY for the Japanese market and was not sold outside Japan and it is known the Japanese only models have some little extra improvements that count , like the mk4 and mk6. Still the mk2 is wonderful, but the reality is that click does not improve the pitch accuracy and its just a lock for the zero value, all factory calibrated decks will be 0 at 0. You will use your mk2 pitch much more because of the click and will get double zero problems in time from dirt/alcohol.
