I bought a used pair of 1200s in 1996 and used them until 2001 then I bought a pair of 1210s really I just liked the 1210 color better but my 1210s work perfectly and I don't see me needing to replace them anytime soon. I don't think I would buy the new 1200. I really like the feel of the analog pitch control and who knows with the extra electronics in the new ones if they will last as long. Bravo though to Technics for building a product that lasts a lifetime and has brought me decades of joy!

I've had a pair of these for 2 years and they're amazing, I couldn't be happier with the purchase. I came from the Mk5g to these, my old decks were not very well cared for before I had them, they were ex hire units that ended up needing new tonearms. I was quoted nearly £500 for each tonearm, parts only, sooo.... The new decks are built like tanks, respect to Panasonic for again producing units intended to last a life time and not just a product cycle. The sound quality is definitely better than previous models, definitely, that was obvious from the first beat! The digital pitch is no issue from me at least coming from the Mk5G, and its really not that different at all from the old analogue pitch. The additional damping on the feet might be an issue if you are scratching etc but mixing house & techno as I do they have never once been an issue, ive never noticed it. One difference I did notice early on is that the platter top is textured instead of the old smooth metal, it makes slip matts a little less slippy, but again, not an issue unless you're really into spin backs. Price wise? Well, yeah, its seems like a lot. Although they're only the same as a CDJ900NXS2 and if you're into vinyl and sound quality is important to you then investment in quality is never a bad choice, you do generally get what you pay for with audio equipment. It did seem like a lot at first when you consider the Mk2 used to sell for £350 brand new, but like Mojaxx said, I see that as ridiculously cheap for the quality of the product. On reflection and having finished paying these off, they are worth the outlay. Im a very happy customer.

No issues for me. I’ve not owned Technics with an analogue pitch, I’ve played on them a couple of times and not really noticed a difference between that and the digital one on the later models.

Super cool, the GR is the only one worth buying as new for DJ-ing. The MK7 is not the real deal and instead of buying a mint Mk2 for more than1000 $, i would prefer to get the GR instead. People complaining about the price of the GR are not really passionate about vinyl DJ-ing. Being a DJ is not a cheap passion, you need to invest money .... Technics is the only DJ tool that holds value and also increases with time.

Thanks so much for this. You answered my unfounded concern after watching this ill-informed review. I was not sold on Mojax not recommending it as I am also a House DJ and do not scratch. What is important for me is build quality and better fidelity as I will be using it with a hi-fi system which I think is the real intended use for this model. Also should the feet really be an issue it is an easy replacement. The weight of the GR is more confidence inspiring than the lighter MK7 that Mojax recommended in another video even after knowing that the needle would skip in his loud bass unit tests. I think we need to have a DJ who is also an audiophile do justice to this unit by giving a proper review.

I owned a pair of 1200s 20 something years ago. At the time I aspired to own the best quality equipment my budget would allow. Now looking to get back into DJing I’m thrilled technics have firstly relaunched 1200 but also delighted they’ve focused on build and audio quality. There is clearly a growing community of (I suspect older) DJs who are now looking at the audio quality side of things rather than just features and buttons. You onlyNeed to look at the resurgent interest in rotary mixers and their usually premium audio output to see this. Both the new decks the 1200GR and the even pricier (and better sounding!) 1200G deliver in spades. We should all be thankful for this focus from Technics - let the kids have their toys with a million digital options and shitty audio quality - I for one am after the audio experience on the dance floor and these new releases from technics DELIVER!!! And as for all the “Technics owes the Dj community” sentiment. Get over yourselves. They don’t owe you shit. Just be thankful they’ve stepped up to the plate and improved upon a classic.

unboxed my 1200 GR this week, ironically this video convinced me to get one. I have 2 minty SL1210's in my mixing room, the GR is my audiophile (listening) table - it is better all round than the older decks and that should not really be a surprise

This all depends on how you learned to beat match and mix, and where you worked as DJ... Large clubs in NYC all had the 1200s placed on very wobbly platforms, suspended on rubber rings ( worked during the early 1990s).. And we old school club DJs only used pitch control to beat match, and never touched the records or the turntable platters at all (unlike this video)... We also used Urei or Bozak mixers, without cross faders, with rotatory faders and hand held, single cup, lollypop headphone... SO I totally disagree that these are not DJ decks... If you are a true, old school trained DJ, the GR actually emulates the wobbly setup we are used to, and actually to lesser degree...

Great deck, definitely the highest quality on the market. MK2-MK6 has been improved but there is small issue with the feet - these are good for queuing but for heavy scratch feet are shaky so for ultimate DJ experience in terms of quality would be worth to change them to isoone feet or just standard MK2-MK6 feet. ( with feet from MK2-MK6 model GR will still offer the best damping factor on the market at this moment because of superior chassis) Original MK2 was aimed for Hi-fi market but deck was so accurate and bullet proof so it was adapted by DJs and yet from one hand they sponsored DMC and from other they never officially advertised 1210 (in 90s) as truly DJ deck. This is only marketing point of view. For example Ortofon is reporting a drop in sales among DJ carts but increasing of Hi end Carts... There is demand for high quality of sound after era of compressed MP3s. And company just came back on the market with Hi-end equipment which costs average as much as a house (technics.com) so for them it would be problematic advertise turntable for DJs but yet there is 16 % pitch range for DJs. Personally I understand The reasons for which the company chooses this politics. In today's economy it is impossible to produce high quality product for the same price like 10 years ago (not mentioning 30 years with 3 mln sold units) So they had to choose between to be or not to be. Can anyone imagine Low Quality Technics deck ?? They would be mixed with a bot and I would be first in the first line ... As a product it is MK2 with better engine, better arm, better quality of sound and I think a bit more accurate pitch (but I did not measured it by software yet, opinion is based by my experience) As a quality freak I'm greautful for quality IMPROVEMENTS over a legend. But is there really demand for quality among DJ gear ? Most of DJs use serato or tractor if they use turntables. So why high quality of sound? Why ultimate WOW & Flutter (wow stability obtion( ? Why Damping factor ?? Why High sensitive arm (skip option in serato) ? Sad but True. Also CD Deck costs 1 K average which is Pioneer - Piece of plastic with Panasonic microprocessor and tons of money invested in advertising in the past. But yet there is problem with drooping 1 K for quality deck. And yes oem decks have plenty of issues: Vertical angle arm bearings, damping factor, anti skating, speed stability, overall quality of sound. btw. Pioneer deliberately or not after DJM-600 fitted their mixers with low quality phono pre amps which sound muddy. The reason is there is no demand for high quality of sound anymore, basic DAC will do the JOB which costs 50 gbp. But there is demand for buttons and a lot of functions which is understandable. Regards

The problem with Panasonic is that they don't understand who their primary consumers are. It wasn't audiophiles that were mad and signing petitions when they discontinued the 1200 turntable in 2010, it was DJs. The reason that they sold so many turntables was because of DJs period. We were the ones begging for them to bring them back and they repay us with an overpriced unit that is honestly no better than a 1200 MK5!

The Technics SL1200 was NEVER designed as a DJ turntable. It was purely for the audiophile market. DJs only took to the SL1200 because of it's robust superior build quality and used them ever since! Fast forward to 2016 and Technics re-introduced their top-of-the-line SL1200 but this time badged it as the SL-1200G later followed by the cheaper SL-1200GR both of which are targeted for the audiophile market and NOT Djs. Fast forward to 2019 and only now can DJs say they truly have a deck designed specially for them, the SL-1210 MK7.

I'm a gay Aussie DJ with some 40 plus years experience. In 1979, I went to a club I loved and the DJ, Paul said darling ya gotta try out these turntables. They looked shiny and new but when I saw they were direct drive, my heart sank thinking of how bad previous domestic direct drive turntables were because there was nothing made for a club and as for torque, pitch adjust, a target light and a stop start button, I thought it was too good to be true BUT as soon as I started using them that Summer, the rest is history. I've hung up my cans now as I'm 2 years off 60 years of age but I bought a brand new Technics SL1200 MK2 with an Ortofon 2M Red cartridge for playback use only in my bedroom. I wanted the first deck released because of my work history so a new 1200 and a Primaluna Dialogue Premium HP Integrated VacuumTube Amplifier, a Pioneer Pro CD player all fed into a pair of Wharfedale standing speakers. My man cave is were my 7.1 surround home cinema resides! Why Matsushita even thought of discontinuing the 1200 and the future decks amazed me. Every man and his dog started releasing copies of the 1200 to the point where it became pathetic. The Stanton ST150 was a great deck but all the others, fingers down the throat time guys and girls! The same was for CD players until Pioneer Pro CD players were released! They're great to use but unless like me you're an audio/visual engineer, the wave forms at the back along with the rest of the eye candy were just that....eye candy! As 2019 draws to a close, I wonder what the the future holds. Vinyl is surging ahead and new Technics SL1200 series decks should be made available with up to date engineering but leave the design alone. With Tractor and Cerato being used, 1200S will always be needed and the good thing with these 2 new formats is that with a switch through button on them, a vinyl DJ can use those switches to bypass them and actually use them live with no hassles. I cannot believe I'm nearly 60! I don't look it or feel it but it's time for future DJs to step up and create magic and diamond dust for the next generation! Cheers people! Andrew from Australia!

Completed console in the previous photo I missed putting the monitor speakers :-)... I wanted to do a review on these splendid machines the SL1200GR. Build quality is great and sound is crisp..but I want to review the beat mix which is the central thing..tried all three motor settings low medium and high torque..1) low torque :and It's a "listen" setting since the rotation to get up to speed and reach its stability the rotor platter has to make a complete revolution... and if you try to get your hands on the record before the rotor makes a full turn the platter tends to slow down and stop.. so low torque is exclusively for listening.. 2) medium torque: It's the perfect setting for djing use...i.e. it's the same as its mk2 or mk5 predecessor or more precisely to the M5G (we are talking about digital pitch) ... the start in initial acceleration and the rotation stability are like the mk5 (I think that at medium torque the engine force reaches 1.8kg ).. in this setting you can play with your hands by increasing or braking the puck as was the case with the old series and d I must say that they behave very well in this "no drift" mode and the same sensation I had on the mk5 ..but much closer to the m5g since we are talking about digital pitch )..anyway at medium torque I can confirm that putting two discs with the 1200GR is like putting them with its predecessors .. no indomitable behavior as someone had said and which I'm tired of hearing .. therefore to those who buy the 1200 GR I recommend setting it to medium torque (it comes out at high factory torque) .3)High torque: As for the high torque (and this is where people are convinced that the problem is the turntable and not the high torque and they go crazy because the tracks don't keep the mix!) you can mix with the high torque but once you launch the record you have to forget to touch the platter because the high torque compared to the medium torque will not allow you to push the disc with your finger to get it back in sync the power at 2.2 is too high and the motor cannot be handled .. therefore more precisely at high torque the engine does not react to the touches with the hand this is because it is at full power and does not feel the stresses ... to mix with the maximum torque once the disc has been launched you just have to work on the pitch and do pitch riding ... having said that I can't than to be enthusiastic about the 1200GR..I repeat set it to medium torque and you will have the same sensation during the mix of having its predecessor at hand ;-) 😉

This is still ABSOLUTELY made for DJing - They're going with the tried and true formula for people who want the actual, OG Technics feel and performance. I doubt they'd have the massive pitch adjustment if it wasn't made for DJing (for a Technics, that is), as well as being cut down and obviously designed for club use with the heavy isolation and dampening. They've even mentioned DJ's quite a few times in the information for this deck; It's made for DJing - just because it's doesn't have 1000 +/- pitch adjust and fifty start/stop buttons doesn't mean it's anything less. I'd rather have it like this. Otherwise excellent review and production quality as always, Mojaxx.

Great review Mojaxx. A bit baffled about the feet and the placement of the RCA and power adapter inputs. Shame they are so expensive. I spent $600 on 2 MK2's when I was 14 years old. They still work today 24 years later. Definitely One of the best investments I have ever made. This love/hate relationship with DJs from Panasonic and Technics is baffling. I'd love to see the numbers on audiophile only sales and you will probably see a sales spike on this model alone just from DJs maxing out their credit cards to show off. One love Mojaxx.

Believe me whe I say I have been thru' speakers, aamp, mixers and slave amps as weel but the decks have stood their test of time. An investment without a doubt. If Technics have updated this product is simply to keep up with the every changing market and try to stay one step ahead of people like Vestax...

I've had my 1210m5g's since 2006, Love them. Play, house ,DNB and hip hop and have never had to play on the pitch any more or less than any other Technics or Super OEM I've used. Technics of any series are still the best for low noise and gain before feedback for sure. The new Pioneer PLX1000's seem to feedback pretty early and are expensive AF, but if using Serato or Traktor like most people these days , I guess none of these potential issues really matter anyways. Check out the new V12 by Denon. Awesome!!!! New contender finally.

People are commenting about MK2, MK3, M3D, MK5 etc: There was MK3 briefly. Then the M3D came out. The differences are slight, but the M3D is a better turntable and fixed an issue that the MK3 needed fixed. But the M3D had a problem with the pitch adjust when you used the instant pitch adjust and dragged the pitch adjust back to the middle. That is why the MK5 were made, it was supposed to fix all the problems with the pitch adjust. M3D is kind of like the MK4. People are commenting about Pitch Control and do not understand it: Pitch control is important for all turntables. Pitch control also is used for different RPM's. Or damaged records sometimes. Technics did not explain how to use this function though in an instruction manual. Some companies did.

30 years ago I bought a second hand pair of Soundlab dlp1600's and a Kam 2 channel mixer. I learned how to beat match and how to fade. Then a few years later, I was working for a company and met a guy who was building his own mixer, he called his mixer the 'Itimidation', it had kills and effects, and because the company I worked for was creating the graphic design for the mixer, I got invited to Ministry Of Sound one Sunday to watch our company and this guys invention "the intimidation" mixer prototype being used by a DJ called 'Randall' showcasing it at Ministry, even later I still couldn't afford Technics, so I bought a pair of Gemini PT2400's and a 2 channel Gemini mixer with kill switches and I learned how to mix better using eq. Then the day finally came when I was offered a pair of used 1200's, and they were used! They had stickers all over them, the lids were cracked and the phono/ground leads had been repaired, but they had matching Technics logo slip Matt's....... That was when I discovered how good Technics (I pronounce them Tek niks not Tek Niques) turntables were for DJ's.... The sturdy feel and confidence of knowing that these decks wouldn't jump at the slightest bump, and the revelation that was the power of the torque these decks had....I got blisters on my thumb, using it to slow down the pitch, and definitely built up my wrist muscles speeding the platter up because of the strength needed to do so. I eventually started producing, Then I had kids.... sold everything except my vinyl, and wandered the Dad wilderness for years. Then when I got back into DJ'ing, I was amazed at the progress, I bought a DJ controller, got Virtual DJ and dived back in...... Been keeping up and interested ever since I have sinceprogressed to digital controller... Long story short.... Technics have and always will be the best. Just wish I could afford a pair now. Thanks for taking the time to read my story......

Fallback If something is wrong with the circuits that regulate the rotation speed where it's not hitting 100% spot on you can use the pitch slider to compensate for it. If you want to experiment and see what certain music sounds like a bit brighter or duller by tweaking the speed you can also do that. Granted, the quartz lock on the 1200 and 1200 clone turntables is so damn good the former rarely happens. @CryptidProductions I absolutely agree. I'm not a D.J., more of an audiofile. When first considering this turntable, I thought I don't need the pitch control, but then the light went on , and thought it'd be MUCH easier/cheaper to adjust / match the proper pitch than sending it in and paying A LOT for the tech. to repair or replace parts. Plus, NO DOWN TIME.😮 🙂

How are they to beat match on? One of my 1200s needs a new tonearm, and im considering getting the gr instead. But i mainly scratch so I'll prob just swap the feet over and isnt a massive deal breaker. Is the digital pitch that bad to beat batch on?
@naughtystudios

@@NastyRhythm awesome to scratch on. Mine never jump out of the groove. Beat matching is definitely different. Not as enjoyable as my MK2 1210’s that I have. I’ve seen a review comparing the Black MK7 and the GR. The guy said Althought the Black MK7 definitely feels cheaper than the GR it was much more like using a MK2 than the GR. if I’m honest I’d of rather bought a Really Nice pair of MK2’s than the GR’s. But you don’t know until you try these things do ya.

@@naughtystudios ah thanks for the reply mate. Yer I think I'll just get a sl1500c tonearm as they are a straight swap apparently. I love my 1200s, and the only reason i considered the gr was because parts are getting so expensive for the mk2s now. Plus you know, opening a new shiny pair of technics is a special experience haha the pitch does put me off. I had a pair of M5G's years ago and i found the pitch really weird on them.

I kind of feel sorry for Panasonic now. Thanks to this video, Panasonic will probably sell less of the new 1200s, since DJs signed the petition - and now a DJ saying, more or less, “don’t go for these” to other DJs who have been searching for a review. I think it was quite cool of Panasonic to listen to all the people behind the petition and start up its Technics branch again

First off, I’m not a DJ, never was. The mk2 and the Stanton at the beginning of the 80’s were the tables to buy. I bought a mk2 and had absolutely 0 issues with it, none, not even a bulb replacement. Used the pitch control to speed up songs so I could squeeze one more song onto a cassette. It sat for a while in the 90’s but then a few years ago I hooked it up again and it just picked up where it left off. I’ve done a lot of KAB upgrades to it, but haven’t really noticed a big sound improvement except fir a new cartridge. I would’ve gotten a GR if anyone would’ve told me it was a vast improvement over my mk2, for the money but I haven’t really heard that.

I am a DJ and Audiophile. Technics SL-1200 MK2 was made for Audiophiles and DJ's. In my opinion it is the best turntable ever made. The feet can be taken off of the SL-1200 GAE, G, or GR but the pitch obviously isn't as good because it is a digital pitch. I always like the snap in for 0 pitch on the SL-1200MK2 to let you know you are at 0 pitch also. To be honest I don't like anything digital on a turntable made to play vinyl records. So I wish Technics would have brought back the analogue pitch. Being that the analogue pitch is better than the digital pitch. My Technics SL-1200MK2 have been refurbished with Gold RCA Cables and I believe they will sound just as good as a GAE, G, or GR if not better (I still use real vinyl at my parties and on my mixtapes. Only use serato if I have too.) Obviously all the SL-1200 tables are the best but I believe the 1979 SL-1200 MK2 is just a hard turntable to beat. If there is nothing wrong with it. Then don't fix it (and their is nothing wrong with the SL-1200 MK2) in my opinion it is the perfect turntable. Plus these Audiophile turntables can't hold pitch like a SL-1200 can, and this is a major reason that Audiophiles should buy a 1200 as well and yes they were made for Audiophiles first. DJ's and Radio broadcasters picked up on them just because they are built like a tank and could with stand the hard DJ use, while also giving you audiophile quality sound. You can DJ with a GAE, G, or GR but I suggest as well to swap out the feet. The feet that come with the SL-1200 MK2 absorb unwanted sound better as well according to some. The GAE, G, or GR are great turntables. The MK2 is still the greatest though in my opinion.

Great review. I'm having real trouble with understanding why these cost so much. They haven't changed a massive amount of things - Yet they've doubled (or more depending on when you purchased the originals) the price? I assume they've trapped themselves in that regard by charging a fortune for the 'higher grade' models.

It's very rare for me nowadays to watch a renowned DJ still using turntables as their main DJing tool, I can't even remember when was the last time Carl Cox used one for a main gig event... and he has access to tons of vinyl records if he wants/needs to! I've seen some small gigs where turntables are still used, like Livia's performance here on KZfaq was the last one I've watched last year, but one-off events aside, where someone wants to show off their manual DJing skills or how it was done in the old days, I'm really not seeing the market for turntables for DJs: they're expensive, very limited in functions compared to CDJS, and require extra workload to perform a DJ set... and I'm not even going to talk about how difficult, expensive and time-consuming it is to find great tracks on vinyl!!

All this praise about the 1200 can apply to any good deck in terms of longevity, some garrards are 60 years old and still going strong, in fact the ridiculous amount of circuitry in the 1200s Make them vunerable to failure more than a basic engineered turntable., Oh and the arm bearings are easily displaced.

great review. now lemme add my few cents: 1) way back in the day i bought my first brand new 1200s for $250 each!! now i know that was a long time but ago, but NO WAY would i ever pay this much for a turntable. right now there are too many choices in premium turntables to even think about spending $1,000's for a technics set. anywhere in the $400 - $800 range will give you way more performance AND value than a set of 1200's (and of course, this doesn't even take into consideration the amount of DJ's who would choose to go the controller route instead of spending that much) 2) as for parent company panasonic, it's pretty sucky that DJ's were the bread 'n' butter of 1200 sales, but still you get all snobby and push the 1200s to "audiophiles." now a few years later you're gonna try to get that DJ market back because ain't too many people gonna spend $1,000s on turntables. so you come out with a unit that sells for ONLY $4,000!! are you crazy?! i don't care if you are technics. also you blew it by initially retiring the turntables, then bringing them back with a HUGE price, now you have a cheaper, not as good model and it's STILL $1,700!! in my opinion this is a huge black eye for the brand. panasonic, if you really want to get back with DJs, you have to adapt to the modern world and make a new digital turntable, similar to numark v7. full midi, touch strip, 8 pads, etc. alternatively you can build a hybrid unit, a'la the reloop turntable. limiting yourself to just vinyl is limiting your sales revenue. your crazy high prices are keeping yourselves out of the huge market of "the average DJ" (and remember you're not competing digitally either). plus either one of these units should not be priced higher than $1,000 so listen up panasonic, this is from a DJ who's rocked his 1200s for over 20 years!! and im quite sure im not the only one who feels this way. i hope y'all are listening thank you ps: to add to this, i also currently own a pair of gemini pdt 6000 turntables, which i bought for $200 each back then. and guess what? they perform as good or better than the technics i previously owned. and these units i bought like 20 years after the 1200's. it shows that even back then there were TT's that were as good or better than 1200s
