Jeff is cracking into the amp section in full and doing a ton of cleaning and recapping. The 1800 has proven to be a surprisingly easy deck to work on (at least in the amp section) and work is progressing smoothly.

@@j-corder Thanks Man. 👍I'm super interested in the recorder. It's fascinating to watch you do the tear down and upgrade and cleaning on this rare gem of a corder.

Jeff, Thanks for sharing the journey. It looks to be a beautiful machine. Can’t wait to hear how it sounds. Speaking of sounds, did you make any tapes prior to your disassembly? A pre and post comparison would be great.

Unfortunately no, I did not make any tapes prior to working on it. That would have been fun to do.

You don't replace the variable resistors also when you recap?

Why not use bipolar caps on the audio boards?
@j-corder
@j-corder 3 ай бұрын
I replaced the caps with better Panasonic brand caps than were in the machine originally. If Technics thought it needed bipolar caps, they would have used them.

@@j-corder Unfortunately, at the time they made these decks audio grade bipolar electrolytics were not available. Even the bipolar film capacitors that were made those days are inferior (ESR) to the film caps that are made today. Otari started using the green Nichicon bipolar caps in their later models in the audio boards. That says something. Also there is a test done by someone and posted on the internet on the bipolar caps Vs. polar capacitors and it showed the polar capacitors had more distortion compared to the bipolar ones.
