Many of us have seen mysterious "TCP/IP options" in our network settings, but what is TCP/IP, and how does it enable the Internet to operate as it does?

1:26 Correction: SMTP is not used to check email. SMTP is ONLY used for the purpose of sending and receiving email messages to and from a server. The protocols you would use to *check* your email are POP (Post office protocol) or IMAP (internet message access protocol)
@unvergebeneid
@unvergebeneid 8 жыл бұрын
The "receiving" in your statement is still confusing IHMO but yeah, I was going to say this: from an end-user perspective, SMTP is used to send emails, period. It's also used between mail servers. Receiving is done with IMAP or POP3 if you're on a 90s retro trip.
@ubertom3011
@ubertom3011 8 жыл бұрын
i still use pop, maybe that makes me retro but i think the fact i still use a seperate email client as opposed to a web based dealio makes me far more passé than any protocol ever could.
@unvergebeneid
@unvergebeneid 8 жыл бұрын
Tom Johnston Nah, I hate web-based dealios. OTOH, POP3 is just impractical as soon as you're using more than one machine to check your mails.

Actually, low-numbered ports like http (tcp/80) and smtp (tcp/25) are _destination_ ports. They don't describe where things are coming from. For that we have _source_ ports, which tend to change from connection to connection.

HTTP doesn't have to use port 80, for example port 8080 isn't that rare and you could set it to be even something like port 1337
@anwarahmed5342
@anwarahmed5342 7 жыл бұрын
Number of Ports are 65,535 ports, from 1-1023 are known as Reserved ports which means they are reserved for certain apps or programs and cannot be used as a normal communication ports, from 1024-65,535 are known as Unreserved ports, and you can use for your end devices. Now for e.g., port 80 is only for HTTP, 443 is for HTTPS (Secure browser), FTP uses port 20/21, SMTP uses 25 , telnet 23 so on and so forth. Assume that you have many devices in your home network, and you want to prevent some users from browsing the internet, all you have to do is go to the firewall in your PC or Access point (router) and assign a port for your PC, let us say port 1025 ,followed by the mac address of the device, then choose Deny access to port 80, which is HTTP.

Could also be he's just using it as an example of a recent meme (where the soon-to-be-released RX 480 was rumored to hit 1.5GHz overclocked by a source that seems to be churning out all sorts of controversial claims), and it doesn't actually mean anything. This video was probably made pretty quickly, and whoever procured the image probably had that on his/her mind and used it as a relevant joke/reference/shot. That's my guess, at least.
