Unboxing the Nokia 5.4, a £159 budget UK smartphone fresh for 2021, with a hands-on review of the camera tech, Android tour, speed benchmark etc. My full review of HMD Global's Nokia 5.4 is coming next week, but here's a run through the specs and features. Check out my round-up of the best budget phones in early 2021 for different price points (under £200, £300 and £400) for the greatest cheap-ish rivals right now!
So what you get is a quad lens camera, complete with 48MP quad pixel sensor, plus ultra-wide, depth and macro lenses. It's certainly a feature-packed cam, offering a night mode, cinema video option and loads more.
The Nokia 5.4 also sports an HD+ IPS screen, and mono speaker setup - not as advanced as some rivals like the Poco M3, but fine for a quick bit of Netflix or KZfaq action. Gaming will be possible thanks to the Snapdragon 662 chipset, same as the Moto G9 phones - PubG, Call of Duty and other Android titles should run fine. I'll be testing that out for my full review though.
Battery life should also hopefully be decent, with a 4000mAh battery on board and that stock UI. Check out my reviews of the best budget smartphones of 2021 to see alternatives, and have a lovely weekend!

Have you had any issues with software updates? Loads of people in the UK have been stuck on older patches and haven't received the january security patch which also brings lots of system stability.

Super appreciate you covering the low/mid range tier. A phone range almost completely ignored by other reviewers sadly. As someone who owns a flagship but is always asked about phones like these by friends and family its good to see you giving your thoughts on them. Plus the British humour is always a plus! :D

Same.. I now refuse to spend top dollar on flagship models now that low and midrange have gotten SO good. I am I the market to buy a new phone this week....trying to decide between this, or one of Samsung's new A-Series phones (A-32 or A-52). I also may consider the iPhone SE 2nd Gen, but $399 is a little more than I want to spend. Anyone have suggestions for something under $300 USD?

Dear Tech, Thank you for all the budget buster reviews. I bought the Poco X3 that you recommended towards the end of 2020 and I'm very pleased with it. The battery and charger or a pure delight. Similarly the Moto G9 Plus looks a steal at £200, I've recommended it to everybody who listen. Please keep the budget phone reviews!

Nokia needs to do there thing with the swappable cases like back in the day. Picture what the phone looked like underneath the case with modern phones, like before but with the option of choosing: do i want slim, rugged, waterproof, or extended battery case? I know you can do that with a regular case but with the old way the underlying framework is just plastic and if you want just a plastic housing then you can have that or metal or glass like Cinderella's slippers. Anyway love your channel. I'm don't need to buy a phone every time one is released but just happy to watch the latest blower shenanigans anyway ;) Keep up the good work.

Great stuff El Spurto. Would be awesome if you could try some Sims in the devices for us here in blighty. Provider support review seems lacking in most KZfaqrs . Does it support WiFi calling , volte , visual voicemail et al.......

"Quad"-lens. 1. Average main sensor 2. Crappy low res wide angle 3. Macro lens that no one uses 4. Depth sensor that isn't really a proper lens. Every time a company tries to sell the above garbage to us as "quad" lens, I'd smack their face with a gigantic salmon. "Quad" my arse.

I hate those. Companies after years of failures finally started to make good cameras and now all went downhill. I had high hopes after sony made 1/2.33 19mp, whoever made 12mp 1/1.7 and that thick panasonic with 1'' 20mp sensor from sony rx100, I think it's called cm1

Harrah! Looking for a replacement for my Nokia 8 and the 5.4 has caught my eye (I'm aware it's a big downgrade. Turns out you don't need a flagship for just web browsing :) ). My Nokia 8 is riddled with bugs so I'm interested to see how the 5.4 holds up. Also, I appreciate you going out and buying it with your own money. You may have missed out on that fine Whisky, but you can have my thanks! I take a minimalist approach to subscribing, but I'll do you a like!

I have 2019 flagship and im looking for a budget phone this year. I realized i don't really need such expensive stuff for my everyday use 😅 now nokia caught my attention on this one since i hate bloatware and with too much going on on my screen. I just like plain android. 🥰

thats more likely targets the young generation,or people with tighter budget. or older people to have serve basic smartphone needs.its ok nothing to write a home about but decent enough as it seems.but u can get last years mid ranger with more horsepower and better camera like xiaomi note 9s.awesome video as usual

I love this color. I first had a Nokia in 1997 until 2010. NOKIA was the best back then. I got the Samsung Galaxy 20+ BTS edition just bcoz of the color and coz BTS... I can't wait for Nokia to get back on top again.

I finally bought it cause of you! I got for approx 116£ sale converted. It's only available online, the original shop I was buying at suddenly got sold out after I added it to cart and that shop got a lot of reviews. The second shop didn't have reviews lol and only 10 people had bought it from the store. So I am praying this is not a fake one. I do not know how to spot an original vs fake Nokia 5.4 My friends discouraged me from buying this and just save up for Samsung... I dunno why I wanted to buy this so much. I only liked the Android One which in turn gave it the Bloatware free pros. I really wanted a good camera phone but I guess I'll just use this as a daily and save up for 3 more years to buy a vlogging phone or camera :) To be fair I agree with people saying compared to other brands this nokia 5.4 is OVERPRICED. However I am wanting a Non China Phone for a while after using china phone for a long time. :(

Love Nokia.. i washed my microsoft Nokia a couple years ago in my washing machine up to tumble dry and even though it was not water proof it still turned on and is still alive :)

It's Google's Fault Android One devices OS and Security Updates are done by Google Nokia are only responsible for the 1st part Apps that they install on top of the Operating System!

This is why I change my shopping region to the UK or spain and buy my phone's carrier unlocked cause the colors are so much nicer and nfc is always on the phone.

UK prices are generally a lot higher than EU. Saying that, I'd be slow to buy from Spain unless the seller is well recommended (I'm in de).

And I've tried googling why they do this with no legit answer other than realizing that 9 times out of 10 european countries usually have better colors. AND there carrier unlocked. (Or the ones I've bought have been!)

Slightly off topic, but Nokia used to have the Dual Camera feature. Not sure if it still exists but how come no one else uses it? I'd probably use it 2 times a year. Can the ported apk be used on other phones?

If you could remap that assistant button that could actually be pretty useful. It could be a physical return to home button (which I actually miss from the old days) or a media control button (play/pause) or some other shenanigans like a screenshot button.

I have been a Nokia fan since it's 'Symbian' days. Having invested in a 9 Pureview phone the manner in which HMD Global left owners in the lurch has left me reluctant to buy another of it's phones.

that's your fault! you should never buy a first gen of any product even if it's from nokia, first gen will always have a lot of issues that most likely will be fixed in later generations

However, in the case of the Nokia 9 Pureview we know that there will be no Mark 2 model as the phone's unique camera array has been ditched for any future phone. The Company promised an update on the 9 Pureview camera app, and has reneged on that promise. Nokia appears to concentrate on releasing new models to the detriment of refining the software on existing ones.

People complaining about poor specs compare to Xiaomi or Chinese brands but this phone still works well for me after nearly 3 years. It freezes and restarts sometimes but it doesn't affect the work too much

I got mine 2 weeks ago. The battery is great. My advice is to immediately say yes to the Android 11 upgrade when prompted to or else it will keep shutting down and restarting on its own. When i upgraded to android 11 it was immediately resolved. No other apps downloaded which is good. It has a clock and calendar but no calculator. Dual sim is good. Reception is good even the microphone on phone calls. But if I use messenger or WhatsApp for videocalls the person cannot hear me loud enough on speaker phone. The camera is just ok. I keep watching on the phone while on LTE but it lasts all day.

@@rigvedgirkar7817 based on my usage since i just use KZfaq and netflix it didn't lag or anything. My gameboy and psp emulator and games are also fine. I just can't say much about other apps like shopping apps i tried once and it crashes with shopping apps so maybe it's the app or the phone I'm not sure.
