I, and I think most people that have these Nanoleaf Shapes panels have a bit of a problem. See the controllers - these things, the thing that actually runs the panels - keep dying. I’m on my FOURTH in around three years, and while Nanoleaf are sending me free replacement controllers, at some point they are going to run out and stop making more. They are going to shelve the whole product line, and I’ll have some very expensive plastic hung on my wall that’s completely useless. This, by the way, is why I hate closed source stuff. When Nanoleaf does end-of-life the Shapes line, and that is when not if, everyone who has one will be up a creek without a paddle when it comes to repairing or replacing broken parts. If it was open source, or at least mandatory to make it open source when a line gets discontinued, the community could keep that stuff working and keep it from going to a landfill.

So you’re sure it’s a firmware problem, rather than a hardware failure of some kind? It’s odd that they don’t spin up a new HW revision, or a firmware update, but I guess it can’t be updated by the customer? But you would think they would fix the firmware and put it on all new controllers coming out the factory. Strange. It implies this is deliberate, or they lack the technical expertise to find the root cause and fix it. But it’s really cool that you’re looking into this!

I've always kept them up to date on the firmware side. On the hardware side I've done my best to test it, although now I have the lab bench PSU I might crack the other one open and try feeding it voltage and see if it looks like something specific is dead. The fact that it's fully destructive to get in means this isn't exactly something I can do or recommend to revive old units. My completely unevidenced hunch so far is that 42V is really high for little surface mount components and there's a chance that an LDO or thin film cap fails after a certain number of cycles or something. Not sure though!

@@TechteamGB I think you’re probably on the right track. But it’s odd that it would fail within a year, as that costs them money. Normally they design things to fail just after the 2.5 year mark, to escape warranty.

The remotes run openwrt??? That seems like a massive shortcut taken by nanoleaf. Thats surprisingly "homebrew"

Nah, just corporate greed taking free open source software, and packing it into proprietary hardware.
