What I loved about what they did with Rebecca, is they made her human. They started the show letting you know that she was trying to sabotage Ted. In any other show, she would be the villain. But she isn't. They immediately begin to humanize her. You know how hurt she has been by Rupert. And then you meet him and you're like "My god what an asshole." You get glimpses of just the gutting pain he caused her. And then her friendship with Keely just humanizes her more. Shows that she is a sweet person that was treated poorly. And now is trying to play Rupert's game. When it really isn't her. She can't help but like Ted. She even is there for him when he is having a panic attack. That is what makes this scene so gut wrenching on both sides. On one hand you're sad for Ted because now he knows the truth (but you also know that Ted isn't going to hold this against her). But you're also sad for her. Sad because of what she felt compelled to do. Sad because of the pain she has endured. And sad because at that moment, her revealing the truth, she feels like she may lose everything. And Rupert will win again. Even though he deserves nothing but the worst.
@AquaAtia

And this is why Rebecca is one of my favourite TV “antagonists”. Nearly every episode she plots against Ted and the team, but each episode also clues you into her reasoning and makes you sympathetic towards her. Then she gets to the point when she cares about Ted but still hates Rupert and still does stuff like trading Jamie. It’s with this scene she does a full turn and becomes Ted’s greatest ally next to Coach Beard

This is one of the scene that sealed it for me that these writers were not here to fuck around. Even as she was walking to the dressing room, I was already exhausted. Because I knew the show was going to draw out this apology and eventual hard won forgiveness over at least the next 5 shows! And then they just didn't. Instead we were shown how forgiveness can work. Hit me like a punch to the gut.

This! Those five episode you talked about? Those were covered in the expressions that flicker across Ted's face as he takes the apology in. A lesser show would have dedicated episodes to the anger and pain. I love how the writers show that Ted feels all those things. But that isn't who he is. He is a decent human being, and immediately puts Rebecca's feelings ahead of his own, so he forgives her. Beautiful writing.

My favourite part about this is Ted’s reaction to her admitting to sending Jamie back compared to his tame reaction to the previous two admissions. He doesn’t care so much about the photos because his reputation isn’t important here. He doesn’t care about the idea that Trent might have embarrassed him because he doesn’t care about getting embarrassed. He’s here to, as he said himself, help these players become the best versions of themselves. She stood in the way of him truly helping Jamie, and that’s what broke his heart the most.

I mean, that was Rebecca's arc in the first season. Her ex-husband cheated on her, humiliated her, treated her like she was disposable. I understood why she wanted revenge and so did Ted. That's the real beauty of this show. Not just preaching to you that you should forgive, but to show you that it will be okay when you do.

It requires someone to apologise. If you try to forgive and the person doesn't say sorry with genuine sincerity, they'll just continue to exploit and abuse. Too often I've seen "the bigger person" completely undone when they "forgive" because the instigator thinks "well, that was easy, they're a sucker! I'll do it again". You can't really forgive a bad person who doesn't change. You can forgive a decent person who's just lost their way and wants to find it again.

I knew he would forgive her because of the kind of person he is and the kind of show it is and also her redemption arc should be rewarded, but I did think it would take longer, maybe a whole episode of him agonising over it, ending with them reconciling. Instead, it was almost instant. He’s so pure.

I love that you can see her early confessions have very little impact on Ted because for the most part, they would mainly hurt Ted and not anybody else. But when she reveals she's behind Jamie's transfer his expression hardens just slightly, just for a moment, because that hurt Jamie. And more than that, it convinced Jamie he was unwanted right as he started to open up and could genuinely mess with his head. Ted always puts others first, even when someone is documenting how much they've been trying to hurt him.

Her reaction to Ted’s forgiveness is one of the greatest moments in this show.

This is so perfect. It really hits the heart of the show. People. How they can change and grow and get through tough times with the right environment. How being kind can mend wounds and give hope.

What’s truly great about this scene and the performances is that Ted *is* angry. You can see it in his eyes, he feels hurt and betrayed, but rather than give into that he listens and allows those feelings to wash over him and it allows him to understand and forgive Rebecca.

Its easy to hate. That is why we so often choose to do it. sometimes though forgiving someone can be harder. But the fruits of its harvest are so much sweeter. Hate has such a bitter taste each and every time.

While my mom isn’t rich, I remember every moment of her being sad, upset, and angry at my dad when they got divorced. Still kills me to this day knowing what she went through. I’m happy they gave Rebecca the story arch and redemption she deserved because Hannah Waddingham has done a fantastic job. Her raw emotions in this show are true talent.

you're glad the character of rebecca got the redemption she deserved because the actress Waddingham has done a fantastic job? I dont understand, what does one have to do with the other.

When a show uses it's premise to tell a story built around it instead of just what the setting is. You get something special.

For those that wanted these two to get together, it was never about that. They where who both needed in order to gain catharsis and growth at a terrible time in their lives. It was because of this moment that they gained the unwavering support they needed for both to heal and move on with their lives. One of the best written shows and it's a shame it didn't get the emmy nod for best show/lead for its final season (which would have been a clean sweep during its series run), but still one of the best shows from start to finish.

When Ted starts the "divorce is hard" few lines, Rebecca visibly breaks, though it takes til he makes her laugh for her to fully show it. She feels seen and understood in a way no one but Ted could provide. The greatest thing about this show is the humanity. There is no one completely irredeemable except perhaps Rupert. But even he gets some human moments because few people are just plain evil. He's greedy and treacherous and wants to be on top of everyone else, but there are things he loves dearly. Every other antagonist and threat to Ted and his team is fully humanized and not defeated with kindness, but won over to the greater team. AFC Richmond isn't just the athletes on the pitch. It's the people behind them who love them and each other and become better humans because of each other. This show was a bright flash of goodness and I forsee it being timeless.

I can't blame her initially. There is so much unsaid & unseen by us as an audience that happened between her & Rupert. But this is key, however petty or wretched she was in her grief, Rebecca allowed people around her who were capable of reaching her & motivating her out of this malicious spiral. Rupert doesn't allow anyone around him that he can't manipulate, control, or hide things from. So he doesn't get to experience genuine moments like this either. And he won't get to know the person Rebecca has become because he doesn't value that direction in life.
