The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

This is my first Ted Lewis night. I’ve been watching Benny Goodman all my life but I have never seen Ted Lewis. And I’m pretty old and play the clarinet ! He started out Tiger Rag holding the right hand on the top part of that set of notes to make them louder. I have never seen anyone do that but it does work. I’ve tried it. Thanks. His style is one in a million.

That is truly an old-time entertainer! You don’t see stuff like that anymore. Born in 1890, he was one of the first Northern musicians to try to imitate the new Jazz sound coming up from New Orleans. Just for perspective, Louis Armstrong wasn’t born until 1901. This is history here, folks.

There's a story about how Ted shuffled up to the bandstand and asked to sit in with Turk Murphy. Ted played several numbers, and Turk Murphy later said that Lewis was great, the best example of pre-Goodman jazz clarinet he had ever heard in person. After all these years, it's great to finally see all too rare video of Ted playing his clarinet and doing his stage routine.

He may have played "Tiger Rag" before that year but Ted Lewis didn't record it until 1923 and it didn't sell 5.5 million copies!

A spirited rendition of "Tiger Rag"! This is the same episode on which Buddy Holly performed "Oh Boy", posted earlier. Also on this episode were Jimmie Rodgers singing, "Oh, Oh, I'm Falling in Love Again" and Billy Myles doing "The Joker". I hope you will post those as well!
