Matthew is not just a fierce competitor, but also an intelligent man whom won't let any obstacle stand in his way. A big thank you to Matthew for mentioning me on his speech, including my Special Olympics World Games Powerlifting record breaking performances in LA. When someone uses derogatory terms, they are saying something about themselves. Don't get angry! Instead you should pity them. They are the ones with issues! Huge props for your accomplishments, your dedication to reaching your goals and representing Special Olympians. Perhaps those trying to put you down are only envious because you do what they cannot? Looking at these comments...just, meh. So much hatred. Can't you see that Mr. Williams and others like him simply want the respect they deserve. They're human too, and sometimes they seem to have a deeper level of compassion than many people I know who aren't disabled. I think people tend to meet the expectations that others have of them. It should make you think what your own expectations are for the intellectually disabled.

Fantastic speech. Vexivero, he's not stupid: Matthew is wise. My son has intellectual disability. This just means his IQ is under 70 & he struggles massively with every day activities like household tasks, socialising or managing money. He's very clever in other respects & I bet he plays the piano better than you! Jams with non-disabled youth as well as pro musicians: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jNaXlNKAs7HDZmQ.html Not everyone use the R-word with disrespect, though. In London, most people don't know what ID is, so I have to resort to saying, "In the States, they used to call this diagnosis mental retardation?" Then the eyes lit up with understanding.

No matter whom does the lift, 600 lbs. is 600 lbs. Matthew was actually talking about my record breaking lifts at the 2015 Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles.
@HalifaxHercules
@HalifaxHercules 3 жыл бұрын
@@PanchoOrdaz In Special Olympics history, there were several Powerlifters whom Deadlifted more than 600 lbs., including Bobby Lord, Louis Maxwell, PG Griffin, James Ellison, and Jackie Barrett (which is me). The Special Olympics World Games Deadlift Record belongs to Jackie Barrett at 297.5 KGs, but some lifters like James Ellison and Louis Maxwell have lifted much more. To lift that much weight requires great muscular and cardiovascular endurance, along with strong upper and lower body strength. In my case, in preparation for the 2015 Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles, I had to train up to three hours a day at 3-4 days per week, and sometimes in severe weather conditions as Western Newfoundland is known for their severe winters.

Equality is becoming a very mixed concept, and it doesn't seem to be attainable. I can view anyone as an equal, as another human being, but beyond that, nothing is equal. In fact, even as a normal healthy person, I am below many "disabled" people. I'm definitely not an equal to someone like Stephen Hawking and even Matthew Williams here, they are much more successful and valuable as a person to all of humanity than me who is nobody. I feel that equality isn't what we should be looking for, instead we should learn how to accept differences.

How can they be viewed as equals, athletically speaking, when they only compete against each other? The Special Olympics is good in that it makes them feel important, but why are the rest of us obligated to pay attention to it?
@chrism.9516
@chrism.9516 8 жыл бұрын
Absolutely nothing, save for human empathy and compassion. To be frank, if you or someone you love lived their life with a disability, you would understand why this is important. I personally found it very inspiring.
@fightfanian
@fightfanian 8 жыл бұрын
+Chris M He is implying that there is something wrong with the fact that most of us don't even know it happened. I also don't know when a wnba game happens. If I'm gonna care about a sporting event, it is going to because the best are competing against the best.

+fightfanian I don't think he is trying to say you are obligated to watch, but should you be informed enough to know that it is happening, probably. His main point is that people like him in the past were treated at times equal to dogs or animals, and that history is more recent than even slavery. Most people with mental disabilities are very misunderstood and mistreated not only by individuals, but by society as a whole. When he talks about being treated as equals, he means as a human being, you know, like the rest of us. I have seen first hand how this still is not the case.
@fightfanian
@fightfanian 8 жыл бұрын
+Polygeekism So what is the onus? Obviously we should treat them like people, they are people, but this video was a plea to compassion for the world to be invested in a sporting event. If this video was a Facebook post, it would read "click like if you know about the Special Olympics and when they are happening, ignore if you don't care about the disabled. As far as being "informed enough to know it's happening, probably" I can't imagine what effect that would have on anything, any of my decisions, my world view, anything.
