Your videos are the reason I didn’t pay a tech $10,000 install a new unit in my house. I had to buy my evaporator and condenser off ebay. No store would sell them to me.

Great video. Looks like my attic when I bought my home, an octopus. What do you prefer to use as a plenum if not fiberglass duct board?
@picklerix61624 жыл бұрын
The top of my neighbor’s plenum popped off just like the one in this video. The A/C was still under warranty so I just duct taped it and told my neighbor to call the A/C company to come fix it properly. My neighbor was 83 years old so I didn’t want her to suffer in the heat. For some reason, the A/C guys in Houston love duct board.

could always toss plumbing strap all the all the wya over and fasten to the metal cabinet underneath it all, if the tape did let go it would stay down and leak way less

Duct board was NOT intended to be used as a means of duct work. Its original intention was to insulate metal duct work. Here are a few reasons why it should not be used. 1.) It is a porous material that collects moisture and will mold (even the so called black lined). 2.) As said in the video. The fiberglass will be blowing all thru the house due to a consistent incorrect installation ( as seen in the video the duct sealant is NEVER used on seams or inside on raw edges). 3.) It slows down airflow again because it is porous. All in all it is a bad product for health. But hey what counts is saving money to people.

Have you used any Mastic Tape yet Ted ? I bought a roll a few weeks ago and man it is some very sticky stuff that will not come loose. I will never use regular metal tape again and never use Duct Board as well lol. I have a small Duct shop and make some custom ducts. Peace Man \m/\m/......

Where the heck are the building inspectors??? Never would have gotten away with that in the towns I worked in. Very good fix in an otherwise crappy installation. Thanks for the video.
@FlyEaglesFly191114 жыл бұрын
Building inspectors are not responsible for this in residential. If a local jurisdiction has it's own inspector than it would have been inspected. Also that is if they are physically fit to get around to be able to inspect it.
@wonderhomie20114 жыл бұрын
Does the city of Greenville have building inspectors? That’s just a big WOW! Could give that footage to the home owner for legal recourse against the home builder or the AC installers.

One thing about ductboard, it is much easier to work with and not worry about small cuts on your hands from good ol fashioned hardworking, does also does make the system quieter, but that is it, it falls apart within a few years, and leaks badly. But great for a return service call.. I have a metal plenty, only bad about it is it sweats like crazy, especially when I crack the tstat to 60. Lol
@DW-vl2wi4 жыл бұрын
Mastic over the metal or cover with otherwise proper insulation, no problem.
@FlyEaglesFly191114 жыл бұрын
Do a proper install on metal and no issues. When you run a system ALL day cause it's at 60 and the space will not satisfy ALL ductwork will sweat.

I had a company called First Class put in new a/c and they left a 2-3” gap at the bottom of a/c and plenum and noticed in my crawl space after u trap clogged and crawl space was 60 degrees and very damp. I don’t know how to fix because they refuse to even respond to me.

You would hate my house! It was built in 1906 our cold air return vents are basically this duct board taped on the bottom side of the wooden joists with holes cut in the floor above for a vent. My furnace filters are always gross and I bet it’s because I’m pulling air from stupid places.

Lowest bidder work...you get what you pay for every time. The zoning system was hysterical to be honest. Why would you do that on a simple residential system? What a joke. The kind of stuff you run into on the regular.

I am sure the same engineer that said flexiduct is acceptable is the same arse hat that said duct board is an acceptable material for plenums and ductwork
@FlyEaglesFly191114 жыл бұрын
Well flex duct is acceptable. In no more than 6-8' to help absorb airflow noise. If stretched out properly it works as intended
@sknight03914 жыл бұрын
Nothing but good old metal foil tape will stick to duct board and keep it together for the long haul.

Um no.. that's what FSK is for. Read your metal tape. There are different temperature applications for it

Why wouldn't a zone system work on a single stage? From what I've learned is you just need a bypass for the extra air when some dampers are closed.

Ductboard was invented because someone wanted to invent something to make a few million. People don't understand that about new products. Two thirds of new products are on the market not due to need for the product , but it's like shark tank. Someone's trying to make a retirement they can live in the bahamas off of. That's fine. But trades need to catch it. Ductboard shoulda never been incorporated into hvac. Idiots don't know the difference between incorporating something new and worthwhile, or tossing aside new garbage products. Just because some jerkoff puts it in the market, doesn't mean it's good. It means a few guys think they can make a million dollars off it. Wtf is wrong with metal ? Do guys really wanna get rid of those metal techs that bad? Really? It comes from jerkoff see vice techs starting a business and there ain't enough profit to use good metal work. There ain't enough profit. A ductboard tech is cheaper. Ductboard is cheaper. You can still charge an arm.amd a leg, but other companies won't ruin their name with ductboard and such. So the people say " marvelous, you're three thousand dollars cheaper , I don't care, three thousand dollars cheaper ". Yes. They are. Sure are. But you're gonna pay to have the entire thing reinstalled if you stay there. So it's gonna cost ya alot more than that three grand. If ya ain't got the damned money , have someone bring ya the pipe and duct and drop it off. It isn't hard to cut holes or squares and tap in takeoffs and duct tape pipe. Then they can come back and tie the unit in with fittings. I'd rather tell the damned customer " look, ifbya ain't got the money, this is what ya do , I'll bring you the duct and insulation and tell you how to do it. It isn't rocket science. Cut rectangles in the floor and rectangles in th ceiling. It's like leggos how to tie it together. Do all that and I'll come tie the unit in for ya. I'd rather convince a customer to do that before I install ductboard and rip someone off. I tell ya what. Hvac fuckers did a good job ousting the manual d and metal guys. Hvac used to BEGIN with the old metal layout guys. Every place had a little shop and brake and lockformer machines. Now, it costs a school graduate too much money to do that, and they wanna act like they know more than the old school metal guys. I'll say, you won't ever beat a classic furnace fitting transitioning to a six inch throat rounded split or y. That six inch throat was used because of the manual d. Jesus. That book has been trashed. I know the issue though. Nobody wants to work for pennies, and there ain't enough money off little jobs to support many high salaries. It's a shame the pride factor has been removed from hvac. I'm not saying this guy, I don't know him at all. I'm just saying this because of that ductboard.

I imagine with the sort of heat that they endure over as long as they endure it, having two systems would make sense on the efficiency front as well as the comfort front. Out in the colder parts of the inland northwest, we could absolutely get away with one system zones by a damper system, but out there I imagine the load would be to much.

Don’t you wish it was legal to take a hammer to contractors that do work like that? And home builders that don’t know how to inspect.
@bdagle4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sticking up for the people that did this instillation. No doubt it is a very poor job! However, the real fault lies with the builder. Builders budget right down to the last penny and will not allow any of their contractors the ability to do a decent job! Which of course is why I have never worked for builders. It's very simple "You get what you pay for"! There will always be somebody willing to do the job, no matter how poor it has to be to meet the price point. The real problem is that the buyers don't know this. Given the option, they might be willing to pay the small amount necessary to get something better?
