No titles. Teddy Brown.
London, probably filmed in Pathe Studio.
M/S of musician Teddy Brown coming up in lift, which he is unable to get out of. The lift boy says he's stuck and Teddy says it reminds him of a beautiful tune he's going to play, 'We Should [sic] All Stick Together'.
Various shots of Teddy Brown playing the upbeat tune 'We Must All Stick Together' on the xylophone, accompanied by a quartet - guitar, saxophone, double bass and piano. In the middle of the song they all sing of sticking together, "and the clouds will soon roll by". Saxophonist, pianist and bassist all take short solos.
FILM ID:3421.02

Fantastic! It was recorded very well too; you can hear the other instruments clearly, but it's the xylophone that rises over them all

As a follow-up to my previous message: I think the saxophonist is Edward Owen ("Poggy") Pogson, who also appeared with Jack Payne and Jack Hylton's bands.

I've only just discovered Teddy Brown - what a master he was. Comparable to Lionel Hampton's playing

Teddy Brown was most definitely a great player with a good band. But you can not compare him to the late Lionel Hampton. No way to compare Teddy Brown to Lionel Hampton would be like comparing Guy Lombardo to Stan Kenton. not even close.

Maybe in technique and showmanship but Lionel Hampton was a master improviser and didn’t sound as hokey when he swung the beat.

@@gxtmfa Exactly what I was going to say. Teddy Brown had a marvelous technique with an 'up down' series of playing. Lionel Hampton really did create when improvising. Not always, but often enough.

@@rayszymarek2920 Where do you get off w/ that condescending "you can't compare Teddy Brown to the late Lionel Hampton" crap? I'll not only compare him to Hampton but state confidently that I judge Brown to be the superior xylophonist. You speak as if your musical tastes are the only ones that matter.

In view of the title of the number, and its date, I believe this was intended also to be a morale booster for the British public at the start of the war.. Does anyone know the names of the other musicians?

That's a great guess, it sounds like that is what it was about. Many war-time pictures were being made, even Sherlock Holmes was written and adapted for some movies, though he's normally a character of the late 1800s.

I often salute artists like the vocal trio supergroup Luv' and legenary composer/vocalist Debbie Gibson for championing what I call relentless optimism in their work. But suffice to say that Teddy Brown was a pioneer and master of that attribute. Not just a virtuoso on the xylophone, but an unwavering encourager, who brought out the best in both his band and his audience. And there is no doubt in my mind that this song was intended to serve as a bit of encouragement for the nation as the threat of war loomed. A hero, a genius and a class act. What a tragedy that he didn't even live to see the 1950s.

@@synthonaplinth5980 Teddy actually was born in North America, and lived in New York for a while. It looks like he just moved to England later on, and then stayed there. So in that way, he's still an Englishman. Also, "Teddy Brown" was his stage name. His real name was Abraham Himmelbrand.

I was so pleased Teddy had lost weight since earlier videos, but alas too little too late. Teddy passed away in 1946 from a heart attack. Not surprisingly, Simon Cowell thumbs his nose whenever an xylophonist appears on BGT. He needs to watch Teddy Brown.

For context, this film was issued in December 1939, so a few months after the start of the Second World War. The title of the song is intended to encourage the public given the context of the winter and the unknown in the coming year.
