Would this be enough to sell the GT4/Spyder to you? Or would you also need the 4.5L engine swap from DeMan?

@@8359s Auto rev match works fine. I've had Rick's 2-5 ratios in my GT4 since 2020 and the auto rev match functions perfectly; all the shop did was pop in the new gears and the car figured it out, no ECU reprogramming. You’ll have to find a Porsche/VW engineer to explain it, because there is zero information out there that details how exactly this system works, but it’s definitely not tied to the gearing itself; in all probability it’s a combination of sensors and the ECU doing all the work.

i love how people complain about HIGH REVVING engines that need to be REV'D HIGH then go "it's not a deal breaker"... like dude, this is who this car is.
@crabapple1974
@crabapple1974 Ай бұрын
Well I think the complaint here is not that the engine is high reving but that the original gearing leaves you kind of out of the powerband a lot. Having driven an older Boxster extensively with similar tall gearing you had to go into first on a lot of thight corners on small country roads since second was geared so damn tall. It was more noticeable on the smaller displacement 3.4 and 3.2 engines. The gearing made no sense honestly. I think it was not soo much for emission etc but to keep them separated from the 911 line.

Posting this in the main comments because it’s been asked a couple times: auto rev match works fine with these new ratios. I've had Rick's 2-5 ratios in my 981 GT4 since 2020 and the auto rev match functions perfectly; all the shop did was pop in the new gears and the car figured it out. No ECU reprogramming was needed. You’ll have to find a Porsche/VW engineer to explain it, because there is zero information out there that details how exactly this system works, but it’s definitely not tied to the gearing itself; in all probability it’s a combination of sensors (i.e. likely those on the flywheel, input/output shafts in the trans, etc.) and the ECU doing all the work. From a shop and driver perspective these gears are plug and play.
@nvl2691
@nvl2691 2 жыл бұрын
With the appropriate sensors relating to engine speed and gearbox output speed, you can calculate the effective gear ratios, hence why the ECU adapts to the new gearing. It's fairly simple math!

People preferring this over the 911 is the exact reason that Porsche leaves the gears long on this platform. It would absolutely cannibalize their honey line which is the 911s. I love the 718s. They’re just the most perfect realization of sports car driving.

No, auto rev match works fine. I've had Rick's 2-5 ratios in my GT4 since 2020 and the auto rev match functions perfectly; all the shop did was pop in the new gears and the car figured it out. You’ll have to find a Porsche/VW engineer to explain it, because there is zero information out there that details how exactly this system works, but the rev match function is definitely not tied to the gearing itself; in all probability it’s a combination of sensors (i.e. on the flywheel, possibly on the input/output shafts in the trans, etc.) + the ECU doing all the work.

@@MattH-wg7ou I learned on a car without anything and even test driving new cars with autorev-matching that I can't find how to turn off is an instant deal breaker. How easy it and responsive the car is when heel-toeing or rev-matching downshifts is such a huge part of the experience. Otherwise it feels closer to sticking it in neutral and braking than doing it by yourself. I'm still getting better at it but I don't see how people don't find learning new driving techniques fun in otherwise mundane driving.

As to the long gearing here is how I deal with it: For driving around town, I shift twice and drive pretty much drive as fast as I need in 2nd gear. Also, I enjoy shifting, so generally, I just shift early and I just miss out on the the high revving. When I need to hear some engine noise and feel the revving, I wait for the highway on ramp or find a point on the road where I have some space, and step on it. The long 2nd gear actually gives you best of both worlds - easy around town, and fun when you want it. I have gotten used to it and like it.

Nice video! Do they change the gearing in the transmission or in the differential? Also does the company that makes the gearing change give the car owner a drivetrain warranty to compensate for invalidating the Porsche factory warranty?
@flyjbaker
@flyjbaker Жыл бұрын
It is in the gearing. If it were the differential, it would be one final drive ratio across all gears. If the gears had an “even proportion” between them, changing the final drive ratio might work. BUT….while 2nd and 3rd are the LONG gears, 6th is actually short for an overdrive gear. IIRC, 70mph is about 3000RPM with the stock ratios…..3400@80mph. If you increased the final drive ratio to improve 2nd and 3rd, that would make 6th even worse. Can you imagine 3800rpm at 80mph?? That would suck for many reasons….noise and economy mainly. Deman actually makes sixth gear taller than stock likely giving it better gas mileage and possibly less noise.

Does anyone know if this modification also fixes the other problem with this manual transmission? The reviewers complain a lot about the long gear ratios, but never mention that most manual 718 GTS/GT4 cars occasionally grind when shifting from first to second, at least for the first couple of thousand miles. I guess shortening second gear should make the synchro’s job easier, and could fix this other problem too.

Damn I might get this on mine................. It's so damn tempting. How is it for daily driving? Do you get annoyed in traffic having to switch from 2nd and 3rd all the time?

Honestly love it in slower traffic. I found myself needing first more on the original setup. Now it’s happier at awkward speeds and it’s in the correct power band

Noob question: but what are the servo-type sounds from the engine? Fuel injection or something? Awesome vid btw. Really feel like I'm experiencing the excitement of this car first hand.

Probably, direct injectors can be loud

It is the injectors. I thought something was wrong with my car. Nope…they all sound like that. Porsche makes no effort to muffle mechanical sounds in their GT cars. These cars make all kinds of sounds!

@@flyjbaker yeah! My Macan makes some super high frequency noises. I actually kinda hate the sound and drive with the windows up.
