Does your child have the attention span of a goldfish?
You may feel like children today are always switching between screens: from scrolling on their phone to using their computer and watching TV. You may even be worried that they can’t hold their focus long enough to pay attention at school. Hence, it might be highly possible that it gets even worse while growing up and having to handle an actual job in the future.
The Neuroscientist, Emma Louise Louth, will shed some light on the inner functioning of our brain and provide insights into the attention span of children in the current age of fast-paced modern technology and social media. Emma is a scientist and the author of Opmærksomhed in the Tænkepauser book series. Her way into science started by studying Biomedical Science and Psychology to investigate how brain cells communicate and the mechanisms behind learning, memory and attention. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

loved the point about gen-z being able to filter through endless media to decide what they want to pay attention to. attention is a limited commodity, and the one big data is fighting for, so when i choose to scroll past one reel/tweet/article in favour of another, i'm making the conscious decision of picking where my attention is spent. that's a win.

I struggle with multi tasking, switching between tasks and focusing for a long period of time. I just don't have the mental capacity. It drains me so much. I'm in my early 30's, somehow feel like I'm stuck in a child's body sometimes.

Okay, but what about how the Internet itself has been observed to rewire the brain's circuitry? It creates a more bottom-up type of human rather than a top-down. We should seriously reconsider alllowing children access to something that rewires their brain circuitry as they are developing. If you are interested, I highly recommend reading Nicholas Carr's book, "The Shallows."

CHILDREN HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH FOCUS, it's who or what material content, is trying to capture their attention.. don't blame the child.. it's a matter of their wanting to participate or being interested in the person presenting, or the content interesting to them. Just like adults, THEY too have dislikes in some subject matter or the way it's presented.

@@monajandali3489 I wouldn't lump all children in that category. There are also still highly focused intelligent children. And child geniuses. And children with average intelligence. Maybe some adults shouldn't be always pushing such high expectations and expecting "goals' to be reached as expected for ALL CHILDREN AS A NORMAL* DEVELOPMENT - BECAUSE WHO IS SAY WHAT EACH CHILDS **NORMAL"* IS?? children shouldn't be labeled, and adults shouldn't *expect other than expect them to be children and let them develop... And help them grow and learn.. they are sponges and will absorb what we teach educationally and SOCIALLY .

I see multiple people using different terminology. Social media, internet, technology etc. Not everything about digitalisation is wrong and bad. We have access to so much information. The thing is that we have to differentiate between using it for "good" and "bad". Because if we don't start to talk about it we will get to a point of being in the times of misinformation and the people who have bad intentions will be able to fully execute them. In theory the mobile phone and everything it can do is a good concept even for children. The problem starts if we only use it for entertainment or for surveillance for example. There has to be a balance between fun and learning, socializing and ghosting, surveillance and trust, politics and comedy, etc... Generally this world in the last few years tends to think in extremes... We have to get back to the golden middle.

If you think it's bad now wait until we see the results of all the kids dealing with the long-term effects of covid. My son had covid in October 2021 and it's December 2022. He's still doing physical and respiratory therapy. They can't get his o2 where they want it. He has such brain fog he went from a straight A student to a failing senior. It's heartbreaking. He told me a few days ago if he had one wish, one thing he could have for his 18th birthday it would be his ability to READ again. He can see the words, they just don't stick. And he was a big reader. Books and otherwise. In his therapy they are seeing teens like him every day. And to be clear his covid case was mild. He was sick a few days. It just never went away. The body aches lingered for months and months. The sense of smell and taste are still muted substantially. So imagine the after-effects of covid in addition to the multitasking. He is in virtual school because he can't walk from class to class. So he has a laptop, a reader, and his desktop he has to do work on. And his phone is for texting. He barely has time to pick up a book anyway, but when he does he puts it down and can't remember what he just read. It's really scary. I worry so much about his future and the future generation.

In the 1950's kids could not learn either. So what was the excuse then? I was in 2nd grade with White children who were having a problem counting 1 + 4 and 2 +3. They were attempting to count on their fingers.

@Yummy Spaghetti Noodles Then how come those things didn't affect me and the other kids who were reading and doing math before they went to kindergarten? So you just answered it. So many of the schools assign the kids an iPad now to do their school work on and be able to have class from home when needed. It drives me nuts that almost all the assignments and quizzes are on a device. Now my daughter had one when she was little because she was non verbal so hers was a means of communication for anyone that doesn't understand sign language. It was given to her by the local children's hospital and she used it at home and school while she was in developmental preschool. Now she's 10, never stops talking, and wants them for games 🙄

Parents are just giving their children tablets/phone/computers so they don't have to be near them. Millions of our adults are taking the easy route and letting some entertaining (but not educating/enriching) technology babysit them. It is absolutely neglect and not some legitimate option for a child to be subjected too. Add to that the chronic overconsumption of processed foods and lack of exercise, and people become very lazy very quickly. This is exactly where our country is headed, a bunch of mouth-breathing, impulsive, emotional, anxious tubby man-children that have an inherently stubborn spirit. You get people that don't do much of anything...

Kids should not be allowed to own technology. Their attention span weakens causing problems for their school work. Obviously you can't bring such an argument to parents because they have lost all interest in parenting and as a result buy their kids technology to distract them, and ease their roles as parents. This should be brought to light

Are you talking about kids with Adhd or without? Adhd is genetic. You can't just catch it from technology or from overuse of technology.

I mean sheltering ur kids causes them to not use their brain just as much as leaving them to their own devices, you have to teach them how to focus so they understand what to do when they can’t focus…

A lot of the schools use iPads or chromebooks now for all assignments and quizzes. It's unavoidable for parents that don't even give their kids devices. For a kid on the autism spectrum or ADHD, it's not going to make much difference or may actually hold their attention better. Some use them for communicating too.

I think it’s tricky. You are partly right but removing technology completely also hinders them in future growth bc like it or not todays wold is build on tech. I think a good balance should be found. Allow your kids technology and restrict time they are allowed on appropriate to their age. So small children would get less time with iPhone than a teenager for example
